Due to lack of hits in another forum, (and another's advice) I'll try asking this here. Several weeks ago I downloaded the scenario "Age of War," yet, when I tried to load it, I got an "Illegal Operation" message. Later, I tried running ZWK, which had always worked, but got the same message. A few days ago I downloaded "Imperialism 1870," and the same thing happened! Oddly, all my other scenarios work fine. Any help would be appreciated.

You probably need the update patch to play the scen. Download the patch from the Civ2 Downloads section of Civfanatics.

I can't speak for ZWK, but all my scenarios are done with MGE, so if you're not running an MGE or haven't installed the patch, this might well happen.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I forgot to mention. I HAVE upgraded my 2.42 to MGE with the Patch on this site. I also use Win95. Interestingly, ZWK works fine with FW, just not MGE.

Since ZWK was made on FW, it should work on any version of MGE. As the problem occurs selectively, it could be due to a memory allocation problem - like do smaller scenarios tend to work?

Try renaming the events.txt to something else and see if the scenario crashes upon loading (of course this doesn't solve the problem but maybe we can isolate the cause first).

Well, good job Kobayashi! A smaller screen does make "Imperialism 1870" work, and a combination of your two suggestions does help with ZWK. "Age of War," however, will not work either way.

Take out the labels.txt and put it somewhere else, then try it. I have gotten responses occasionally from players about problems running it, and sometimes this will fix it. If not, I'm out of ideas.

Nope. That didn't work, either. I've about given up on AoW. "Imperialism 1870" is turning out to be worth the time, though.

Don't really know why AoW isn't working for you. It's a mystery. There are plenty of others out there who have it and play it, as the threads on the Scenario League forum readily attest. Where did you download this copy from? AFAIK, only the Spanish Civ2 Site and this site have it available for download. Also, both of those sites have received my updated versions of some of the older scenarios, including AGE of WAR. I'm wondering now if the old sound files and the new scenario files are fully compatible. You might try running it without the sound files (if you're using them) just to see if that solves the problem. If you like, leave your email in this thread and I'll send you copy of AoW directly.
