This is the first (very small) chunk of a complete mod I am working on at the moment.

I changed the ocean/sea graphics (and the ocean/sea/coast border graphics) to something that looks like cheap sci-fi-computer-game terrain.

Here's what I designed, and how things should work:

Coast = Sub-orbital Space
Sea = Planetary Orbit
Ocean = Deep Space

Thus, using the rules already in place for ocean-going ships, you can design units to go with a space theme. Early on planes can only operate in atmosphere (the galley->coast relationship), later you have rockets and satellites that can go into orbit, and later still you have space ships capable of crossing the seas of space.

Your comments are welcome. Also, if someone wants to improve on my graphics, BY ALL MEANS DO SO! You'd be saving me some work. :D

UPDATE 5/19:
I've got a fix -- see the screenshot, read my reply later in this thread.

The new zip includes wSSS.pcx, wOOO.pcx, and WCSO.pcx. Hope you like...

Awesome. If you could fix the problems, we could be seeing some "planetary" maps soon. With like round islands of land as planets. :D

Its hard to tell the diffrence bwtween planetary orbit and deep space. How about deep space being utterly black? (not realistic, I know...)

Umm... Iv'e seen better... No offence, but Lukree has made something excellent with the same concept for the StarWars mod. To get a little screenies of it (and maybe a download, not sure) go to The StarWars: A new Mod Website
What you made is very nice (except the mess-ups already mentioned in former posts), but I am biased, as I have seenn what Lukree made... Good job.

I got tired of wasting my time with wussy windows graphics programs, so I went ahead and unleashed the GIMP on his sorry ass.

(No, I don't have photoshop. I can't afford photoshop, besides, the Gimp is free.)

Using the Gimp, I found out what my color problem was. It seems there are only 256 colors in each of the Civ pcx files, and if you want to use one that isn't there, like oh, say BLACK for example, the resulting file you create will make civ do funky things with color.

My workaround: Change one of the 200+ shades of teal in the indexed color palette to black. From there it was just a matter of image manipulation.

I kept the normal coast colors to serve as "atmosphere". Thus, you can use the space background with other un-altered terrain files, so you can do things like forest moons and desert planets.

Later, when I do the whole set over, I'll try to do something a bit more professional for the air->orbit->space transitions. I just thought some folks might want to grab this one now.

Moved thread:
From: Completed Modpacks > Graphics Modpacks
To: Civ3 - Creation & Customization
Reason: "This is the first (very small) chunk of a complete mod I am working on at the moment. " Only completed Graphics go here.

Yes, the space terrain that Lukree did is available for download at the Star Wars mod site.:)
