Science Discussion- Increasing Science Research

We should build Libraries in our cities. The Libraries can benifit us in both ways. One, It can help our culture and second can help our Science rate :).

Yes, but we can start preparing by building libries for the time when we get education. The GL will be useless than and we will most likely bring are science rate up to 10%.

I wouldn't say useless. But of course I know you've realized. As CivGeneral has said they do provide culture. As Strider has said they would also be in place for when we do decide to research.

Their are quite a few bonus's to building the libries early instead of when we raise are science up to 10%.

so why do we need science anyways?

if we go on a tech nobody researches and which we really need, then we should put it on max to gain it as soon as anyhow possible (within our ppl staying happy of course).
but if we dont need that tech so urgent, the 40 turns of a scientist should be sufficient. every gold we can raise will be needed.

Yes, but every turn we stay on the top in research the more gold we can get.... Look at it this way.... If we can get a good research rate and then sell the techs we get from that research rate we could benefit more. The AI sells techs for more than their worth. We can do the same.

I don't think we have to raise our science rate until the Great Library becomes obsolete...

Until we get libraries in all of our cities and until we get to a point where we have several more cities than the other civs, we are going to have a difficult time keeping up in the tech race.

Also, we shouldn't be too quick to increase our science spending just yet. We are currently building Horsemen and will want to upgrade those units en masse to Knights as soon as that advance becomes available. We will need much gold to accomplish this.

Nonetheless, I think our Science Dept will play a very important role for the rest of the game once the Great Library loses its effectiveness. We will need to research desirable techs before the other nations do so that we can sell them at a significant gold per turn. This will not only allow us to increase our tech research rate, but also hinder the other civs' ability to keep up.

Currently, I think our best bet for such a tech would be Engineering. The AI likes to shoot for Monarchy, Republic, Feudalism, etc. If we start working towards Engineering, we may just discover it first and can therefore sell it to the others at a premium.

FortyJ.... Education is still along's way off. We should have plenty of money to upgrade to knights & support a 10% research rate when education comes about.
