scientific output problem

Hi guys. I'm new to this place, so it would be polite to say hello first :)

I have a question. Recently i'm a bit tired of world conquests, tens of cities and such, and i'm playing with a single city.

In that mode, i always aim for the Engineering first, and after building one Phalanx, one Settler, Granary, i'm rushing for the Colossus. Normally, i'm still under Despotism, and at that moment, my city is like size 5, producing ten trade, 6 goes to science and 4 to money.

With that 6 scientific points, at that time, sometimes i get an advance in 6-7 turns, sometimes, it goes even up to 14 turns!

What's the calculation like? Terrain always tends to be the same, either it's riverine shield grassland, or roaded shield grassland...under despotism producing same...two food, one production and two trade.

Thanx in advance.

Welcome Zare.

Playing with one city is a common favorite style among many players and the straegies for that have been well researched. Look up OCC (One City Challenge) in the forum. Also, look at logs posted in the GOTM forum.

Your research cost jumps around because of a concept called Key Civ. Do a search on the topic in the forums.

Welcome Zare.

Ali has some good points. Also, I noticed that you have reached city size 5 and are still in Despotism. You need to switch to either Monarchy or the Republic much sooner. No matter what style of game you play, your first goal should be to get out of despotism.

I did a check on the number of beakers needed for the advances (at least in my version - deity level - 4000 BC with no additional advances for the AIs).
1st - 10th: 10, 22, 36, 48, 60, 84, 105, 120, 144, 170
11th-20th: 187, 216, 247, 280, 315, 352, 374, 432, 475, 660
21st-30th: 735, 770, 805, 864, 900, 936, 999, 1036, 1073, 1170
31st-40th: 1209, 1248, 1320, 1360, 1400, 1512, 1554, 1596, 1638, 1680
41st-50th: 1722, 1840, 1892, 1936, 2025, 2070, 2115, 2256, 2303, 2350
51st-60th: 2448, 2496, 2544, 2646, 2695, 2744, 2907, 2958, 3009, 3120
61st-70th: 3172, 3224, 3339, 3392, 3445, 3564, 3618, 3672, 3864, 3920
71st-80th: 3976, 4104, 4161, 4218, 4350, 4408, 4466, 4680, 4740, 4800
81st-90th: 4914, 5002, 5063, 5292, 5355, 5418, 5481, 5544, 5607, 5850
91st-100th:5915, 5980, 6231, 6298, 6365, 6528, 6596, 6664, 6831, 6900
110: 8030, 120: 9480, 130: 10660, 140: 12040, 150: 13650
160: 15200, 170: 17000, 180: 18900, 190: 20710, 200: 22400
210: 24780, 220: 26620, 230: 28980, 240: 31440, 250: 32000
251-260: 32000, 32000, 32000, 32000, 32000, 10, 10, 22, 36, 48

The 256th advance is the same as the zeroth advance and the 257th advance starts over at the beakers needed for the first advance.

There are other posts that deal with the comparison to the key civ.

If you play the purple civ (and become ranked as most powerful so that the purple civ is your key civ) then the reseach costs go way down. 1-19 are slightly lower and 20-255 are all tech# times 26 (on a large map at deity level). Thus the 255th tech (around future tech 167) costs 6630 instead of 32000. Then you start over at 10 beakers again.

But purple is such an ugly color. My visual units much prefer the white civilization.

With science, I go for the wonders, libarys, universitys with that stratergy in mind.
All is devoted to those wonders and facilitys. Avoid a fight, thin defence, and bring people out of the fields to be Scientists. Get the wall and U.N. and when the AI attacks have units that can quickly muster at a threatened city.
But pursue science with caravans and any other resource you can devote to science output.
:)
