Scouts the Gift of Knowledge

It can help. I've found that on Prince and such (from an earlier GotM), scouts are FAR more valuable than on Diety or Emporer. On Diety & Emporer, the massive unit bonus the ai gets commonly interferes with my teams of scouts. arrrgggh

Prince??

But anyways, if i'm expanisionest (which i hardly ever am, except for Iriqouis :)) i usually build quite a few to fan out and meet everyone and get the huts. Trading comm. is also very helpful.

Yeah I tried that once to test the MF scouts I'm making, and I got the whole map and a heck of a lot of techs as the Zulu. Two problems:
1) Once Barbs pop up you're in trouble
2) If you're bad like me, you can't keep your lead you get as Expansionist (I posted a thread about this earlier)

But yeah I do like scouts

Scouts are nothing compared to a Jaguar warrior. Wasn't there another tread about scouts

Problem with Jags is you can get barbs from huts. Scouts mean no barbs

It's hard to keep a tech lead in the ancient ages anyway. Techs are cheap, and once you've learned one it gets cheaper to research for everyone else. On top of that, the AI trading bonus means they tend to get sold quickly, thus spreading out the research over several civs.

To me, the real bonus of free techs from expansionist trait is in *cash*. You can sell your new techs around if you like, and gain it directly, that way. You gain it indirectly by not having to buy as many techs. And if you like, you can gain cash by resting on your laurels, turning science off (or to min) and raking in the gold while you wait for the AIs to catch up to you. Makes those massive upgrades a trivial matter, gives you gold for cash-rushing, or however you want to spend it.
