I don't know if I love Scrabble enough to make it part of my identity. A thread about Scrabble in general would probably be okay, though, so maybe I can do that and then sneak it in a little down the road. :)

I play Scrabble in RL and I have a PC game, but have never played online. I suppose you don't allow custom word lists...

Well if you play with challenges on you can ask the opponent if they will challenge ;)

They might lie though.

What sort of custom lists are you after? The allowed words are pretty forgiving.

Way back, years ago, I noticed that the rules printed on the inside of the Scrabble box don't actually forbid foreign words. Therefore, my regular Scrabble opponent and I agreed to allow any foreign word, subject to these rules:

1. Not a proper noun
2. Does not contain either capital letters or punctuation
3. If asked, the player must be able to prove the word exists
4. In keeping with #3, we allowed dictionaries to be used
5. Subject to the above points, we allowed Klingon, Romulan, and Vulcan words.

I have a feeling this group wouldn't allow that... :(

The British Scrabble dictionary has a few foreign words in... EAU, EAUX for example.

Probably no Klingon though. ;)

EDIT: I'd give you a game with foreign words allowed, though I don't know all that many. :)

My unabridged English dictionary has over 300,000 entries. Is that scrabble legal?

SOWPODS (The British dictionary) has 267,751 legal words... obviously only going up to 15 letteres in length.

The site (isc.ro) has a handful of different dictionaries you can select from. You could choose to play with whatever list of words you wanted if you and your opponent agreed on it and didn't challenge those words (the software wouldn't know to allow them). It's also got dictionaries for French, Dutch, Romanian, and Italian, if your English isn't as good as those.

And since it's totally on-topic now, Scrabble! :D

I don't seem to be able to register, every handle I enter gives me "handle already in use".

I love the words 'SEX' & 'ZEN' for cheap, triple word squares. There's a few more, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

Hmm I thought ZEN wasn't allowed (proper noun?). It's capitalised in my dictionary.

I got NAZIS on a triple word score the other day (see high-scoring games thread).

EDIT: Dutchfire, "dutchfire" doesn't seem to be in use so I don't know what the problem is?

Well if Zen is a proper noun, then Nazi sure is a proper noun in acronym form!!! :)

As far as I recall, the modern, official rules of Scrabble are extremely liberal. As is the official Scrabble dictionary.

I just checked (on the isc site you can type check zen and check nazis to find out).

ZEN = invalid
NAZIS = valid

That's with SOWPODS though (British official words), TWL (US words) may be different.

EDIT: In my dictionary Nazis is capitalised as well though :) So it wouldn't have been allowed in my home games ;)

The letters of the Greek alphabet are legal.

alpha
beta
gamma
delta
epsilon
zeta
eta
theta
iota
kappa
lambda
mu
nu
xi
omicron
pi
rho
sigma
tau
upsilon
phi
chi
psi
omega

I first learned this alphabet in junior high school - and can still do the list off the top of my head. :D

There's a top tips thread in the scrabble group for things like that!

This thread is where we use Lucy as bait to recruit new members.
