Scratched CD

Had to do a windows reinstall the other day and went to get my copy of Civ IV complete to put it back on the system. However, when I try to reinstall, the CD hangs at the same damned bit (moonlight dirge.mp3). I don't suppose anyone has a possible fix for this (other than buying the game again. Not a problem, but I want to play it now!!!).

I am running a Macbook with 4GB ram. Using Bootcamp, but same problem happens on Parallels. I think it is just a scratched CD. I legitimately bought this CD, and am not looking for 'No CD' keys or anything. Just wondering how to get around it, as not really used to using Windows XP.

Thanks.

did you try copying the disc content to your hard drive (into one empty folder)? sometimes that works. You could then run the installer from there.
There are a few heroic ways to repair scratched discs - but I don't trust those. If all else fails your could ask take 2 to replace your disc. Though they charge for that and the game might be selling for less by now.

If ori's method doesn't work, sometimes a different disc drive will read it. If you have 2 drives try the other, or if you have access to another PC copy the files onto that and then across to your hard drive to install it from there. It all depends how badly the disc is damaged. Good Luck.

That's the thing, the disc doesn't appear to be too badly damaged (i've seen worse, my xbox chews up discs more severely). Tried on a different drive, an old DVD drive I had, but didn't get as far. Might try the idea with about a different computer, mount and transfer across. Worth a try. I like a challenge.

When you copy all the files to your hard disk and only the moonlight dirge.mp3 file fails to be copied you can replace it with a different mp3 file and rename that file to moonlight dirge.mp3.
