I've never gotten to a nuclear war in any of my games, since I'm usually done conquering the world before I finish the tech tree, because I play on Monarch or below. Can anyone post a saved game from a nuclear war with the SDI small wonder so that I can see how shooting down enemy nukes work?

Also, even though I've built lots of fortresses and coastal fortresses, I don't think I've ever seen them firing on enemies moving past it. Do they really work? What about SAM sites? I don't think I've seen those fire on planes before, either. Do planes have to be bombing the city square for it to attack, or does it defend the adjacent squares, too?

Coastal Fortresses are utterly worthless. The enemy ship has to move into a square next to your city and then into ANOTHER square next to your city in order to trigger the coastal fortress to fire. Totally worthless. Can't say about the SAM sites because I have never had a city bombed that has a SAM in it (assuming that's how it works in the first place)

this is the nuke race situation as it existed before the dark winter.

i re-enacted this just for this post so it might not reflect the actual sequence of events but nomatter....

someone should probably do a study to really determine the chances of intercepting missiles. one of my basic rules during nuke war is (1) have enough nukes to cover everyone on the planet besides just the initial target...preferably be at war with all nuke powers when u start a nuke war so that u can knock them out first strike and (2) have offensive troops nearby to overrun the nuked civilisations immediately.

Based upon that world map I don't know why the Persians don't just declare victory and start a new game. They are totally dominate.

I'd never use nukes without a Quick Response option to a First Strike. Why the MP was Editied into a trade-producing Internet Wonder.

I partly disagree about Coastal Fortresses. In my experience it's no uncommon that AI ships get fired at, particularly if the city lies at the apex of an peninsular or similar. OTOH, it's very rarely that lost HP means anything much.

The free ZOC attack of certain land units is much more material, since land combat tend to be more even than sea combat.

just for the record, i don't play with culture or dominate, I prefer to give them a slow death ;) :D :D :p

Sounds like a Warsaw Pact Plan :D really!

I agree with you, but I add

1) Have more than enough nukes for any cities on the map PLUS more than 50 tactical nukes for ships, tanks, economical damage.
This way the enemy will die! You do not need to overrun them with amored vehicles or occupy their country.

In Civ III it is only winable when you first strike, unless the AI cannot cover all of your cities, which is stupid!

It is more than unrealistic having ICBM's located in cities. who does that?
ICBM's are in silos or mobile transported, just like tactical nukes. One should change that in the Editor... ICBM's also could be carried by Bombers or Helicopters. No nations shoots them from a City :o

2) Good point to overrun them, but as I said before, it would not be necessary, unless you want to do a lot of cleaning :D
Very well, I never do nuclear war. I also never attack with nukes. The possibility is low that the AI attacks me with nukes if I haven't used them before.

:-)

i never did answer the question as to why i didn't just end the game...well, i was looking to milk the game and rome was building spaceship parts - the second time since i had earlier destroyed it with an expeditionary force of 24 MA. sadly the perished in the campaign as the bulk of my troops were engaged elsewhere.
