SEA ROUTES.. how to establish... geez i just found myself in situation where i couldn't trade luxuries with 3 other civs because I hadn't "established sea routes". Heck, I have harbours, I have caravels (by now I even have a destroyer). What do I have to do to establish sea routes? If my caravel goes anywhere near the shore of another civ, the civ gets crabby. Grateful for help.

It all depends on your current technological level.

If you have not yet acquired Astronomy then you can only establish trade routes through coastal tiles.

If you have acquired Astronomy, you may do so through sea tiles as well as coastal.

Once you have Navigation, you may trade through all naval tiles.

The way sea routes work are as follows:

1) You have must have a clear passage through the respective tiles according to your technological advancement. Meaning you should be able to trace a path through squares you have discovered between the harbor you have to the harbor you intend to trade with.

2) If the harbor you're trading with is not a capital, that harbor must be connected to the capital of the empire you're intending to trade with.

3) If there is an enemy ship completely blocking part of this path, the trade route is disabled.

Hope this helps.

Salam, If you've got destroyers then you have the discovery(cant remember which ONE it was, navigation maybe?!?!) to use ocean squares to establish the route.

All you need is a harbour on each continent.

If you have no costal cities, you need to get at least 1 airport. on each continent & conect all cities on those continets to the one with the port.

"Heck, I have harbours"

-is your harbor connected to your capital by road, other harbors, or airport?

-does the civ you are trying to trade with have a harbor that is connected to their capital?

-(not sure if this matters) does the civ you are trying to trade with have astronomy/navigation, or are you connected by coast (sea with astronomy)?

You'll just have to wait until they get around to building a harbour themselves, since there has to be one on both ends of the trade route. You might end up waiting awhile though, they don't seem to do that very often.

It sure would be nice if you could see the route on the map so you could send in a ship to blockade it. That would make navies a bit more useful.
