I cant trade with countries on different islands, i need a "sea route"

How do i build one, what tech and was specs?

You do need a harbor. Your ships also have to be able to get to the other island normally, no suicide runs here. In addition no enemy powers can be in the way of the route or it will be cut.

To trade over water both you and the other civ need a city with a harbour that is connected to the capital.

This will allow you to trade only over coastal tiles until you (or they) discover Astronomy or build the Great Lighthouse, allowing trade over sea tiles.

Once you (or they) discover Navigation or Magnetism then you can trade over ocean tiles.

First of all, both nations need to have a harbor that's connected to their capital.

Then, there are 3 types of "sea" tiles in civ, the Coastal tile, the Sea tile, and the Ocean tile. Before either trading nations learn Astronomy, the "sea route" may only use the Coastal tiles. I.e, an imaginary ship can go from one harbor city to the other, using only the light colored Coastal tiles.

After Astronomy, or if one of the trading nations has the Great Lighthouse, then Sea tiles may be used in the trade route.

Finally, Navigation allowes trade routes to use the Ocean tiles, basically opening up all trade routes.

Most of what has been written is correct. To summarise:

* Both civs must have CONTACT.
* Both civs must have a harbour that is connected to their capital by road (this can be a harbour of another civ - as long as there is a road route. Note: You can use a harbour of a civ that you are at war with, but not a civ that you are BOTH at war with.
* You cannot trade across any water tile that is not explored (still covered by fog of war). One civ needs to "explore" the entire route - its not good enough that one explores half and the route, and the other the rest.
* You can only trade across tiles that you can safely move into. You can always enter coast. Sea tiles need the Great Lighthouse or Astronomy. Ocean tiles require navigation.

You might be out of luck even if all the conditions are right. The AI is notoriously bad at building Harbors, and there's no way to convince them to do so.

You could also use an airport if both civs have one, but you probably won't get to that tech for awhile.

Yes, technically you can use airports, but by the time they're available, everyone who isn't landlocked already has harbors and all the relevant naval technologies.

But they're still good for "colony cities" where you can't rely on a trade route due to war etc.

True, that.

I think you need to explore the sea route all the way up to the tiles about two tiles off the other civ's harbor. This can get pretty hard to do when the other civ's cultural boundary extends half a dozen tiles out to sea. And if you can afford it (meaning when you're in a deadlock on the main island with 150 cavalry and infantry, but don't want to go to war,), you can always set the research bar at it's highest and go all the way up to Flight for airports, just land a settler somewhere on the other civ's island and start trading.

That happened yesterday to me. The Aztecs had their own BIG island (I think they conquered the Persians, since some of their cities have Persian names), and I just landed a settler and rushed the Airport and a Temple. Problem solved, and instant trade routes to three new civs.

You have to be very careful when trading through sea tiles between islands, specially if your game is set with Barbarians, sea tiles are not very safe as it can be cut very easily. Barbarians can cut a sea route and you can end with a reputation hit; any sea tiles being under some other civ border can be cut if this civ declares on either trading partner, and you will end with a bad reputation.

Just a remark, you do not have to have a harbour yourself, but you need to have your Capital connected to an Harbour (could be from another Civ) by road. The same remark is valid for your trading partner, in that case pay attention to the road you are using.

Another must-have:
When you contact a new Civ, and both of you have a Harbor and a valid trade route (usually this happens when you find a remote, backwards Civ), you still need to 'refresh' the map before you can make any trades. Either you open a city screen, or wait for the next turn; one of the advisors is not enough, technically those are only overlays, not a different screen.

To get around this, you could try to build your own port on their island. Or a brief war to take one of their coast towns. I have done that before. Although with war, you need some time to repair relations.

As a side note: If you are trying to trade with someone on the same island that will not build roads to you, ask for a ROP and build your own.
