Is there any particular reason why it says I do not have permission to search?

There are a couple of threads here in SF about it. TF did say he'd turn it on this weekend. With all the new users coming aboard because of Conquests, he decided that it would be better to have more users being able to use the forums with no search than to have the search on and people not getting the pages they wanted. I think he said that with the search off the site can handle 50 more users than with it on.

Hmm... Maybe TF (or some other one) could create an auto- search disable/enable thingy, that turns the search off when there are too many users online...

I understand the speed thing, but any way the Search Function can be on in low Traffic times ?

Well, I think TF has to manually turn this on. I don't think it can be automated. Simply because if it could, he would have done so by now. As much as TF loves this site, I can't see him sitting on a web browser all day watching site traffic to turn on or off the search feature.

Plus, with this being a global community, there is no real slack time. When the US is sleeping, Europe is just waking up, and the Western Pacific Rim is in the evening. So while there may be times when there is less going on, I don't think there's much of a 'slow time'.

I'm sure TF could provide some statistics to show users online at any given hour.

I feel your pain, O&S. . . I too miss the search function. It's one of the more useful features here.

Search is re-enabled now, at least for this weekend anyway.

And the cycle beguins again. Once the Server becomes to busy then the Search feature becomes disabled for the public use again

I think the Search experiment has failed. I got lots of server busy messages at around 2am today (GMT) - that's 6 to 9pm in the states.

10:30 am Central time, couple of server busy, ~190 people on the boards.

I'd personally rather have search and a few more server busy errors than about half as many errors and no search. Server busy errors are only minor inconviniences that last less than five minutes, they don't bother me that much.

Oh well, I didn't expect to have 260 people browsing the forums on weekends. I guessed the snow kept lots of people indoor this weekend.

Search is turned off again. I will turn it back on Friday night.

During the Christmas holiday it will probably be mad around here. All newbies trying to get info on how to play the game. Maybe you should turn off posting too.
