I am being absolutely MAULED by shadows. Not only are they wiping out my catapults, they're rampaging through my empire killing all my slaves and workers. I am playing as the Illians. How can I detect them?

Have you tried hawks?

I think those can detect them.

Failing that, there's the Perfect Sight promotion. I think only recon units can learn it. Requires Sentry I and II. If you're at the stage that shadows are running around, it shouldn't be too hard to get and level up a ranger or beastman.

This problem have been reported in Bugs Thread, but have not resolved yet. Currently, the only way to see Shadow and its UU is using Reveal spell from Empyrean priest.

Hmm. So why does the AI always seem to attack my Shadows?

Have never reflected much over this, have just assumed that "damn, should have built a hawk", and when I finally have a hawk or whatever "damn, they escaped". But now when I did some testing, wow, this is a serious bug, nothing in the entire game can see a shadow (besided the Empyrean thing). Okey I now that my shadows usually aren't attacked (I don't play on such a high difficulty level) so I cant say anything about that, but lets hope that the AI cant see them either (because that would be a such a large bug that the game more or less would be un...)

If your shadow attacks, I believe it is exposed for that turn. That would be my only guess.

No it isn't, Shadows are always invisible. There must be something else. I have used them to kill off rivals when I had the Grigori. Really killing machines, and completely undetectable by the AI. At least at that time. Now with the promotion allowing to see invisible, I do not know what's up.

A nice solution might to allow animal units to sniff them out. Thye used dogs to hunt down the Invisible Man in the H G Wells novel.

My shadows only seemed ot be attacked on counter attack...

I dont know..

but, I believe a unit is never invisible if in a city.

Yes, you are right. When I said always invisible, I assumed that it is known that no unit is invisible in a city :).

About that counterattack thing. I just remembered an issue I had when upgrading ghosts to shadows. For some reason, if I clicked on hide once, by mistake, then the shadow would never regain its invisibility. The hidden promotion would take precedance, and if I attacked, the invisibility would be removed. I had posted it in the bug thread, but I don't know if it was fixed. The advice I was given then was, "lose hidden before upgrading, and make sure you never get it again." It could be that you are having the same issue.

Haven't looked at the code too closely because I had already enabled Multi-invis/Multi-SeeInvis by promotions so didn't incorporate Kael's version, but all of the issues people have been reporting with invisibility did start at the same time that it became possible to see invis types via promotion. Could indeed be that a small bug crept in with things at the time.

If things are working properly, this test should show you:

Place a Barbarian Giant Spider in worldbuilder somewhere empty of all other units. You should see the spider, but no flag.

Place a scout under your control next to the spider. You should now see a Barbarian flag on it.

Delete the scout (flag disappears) and place a Hawk. Should remain a flagless Spider.

Now delete the spider and place a shadow (next to the hawk). It should show a Barbarian flag.

Delete the Hawk, Shadow should lose his flag. Now place a scout next to the shadow, should be no change (remains flagless).

If you pass all of these tests, basic Invis_land & invis_animal function properly, along with basic SeeInvis via UnitInfos. You can then try playing with a warrior and granting him Perfect Sight or other whatnots to see if everything continues to work properly

(The whole flag system is just a handy shortcut to having to leave worldbuilder to see if you can REALLY see the unit. You could also skip worldbuilder completely if you use chipotle and just place the units using CTRL+SHIFT + LEFT_CLICK on the tiles. Then delete your own units to clear the visibility.

I am positive this question has been asked before, but I forget the answer, so here it is: How do you get Shadows with the Grigori? I thought you needed CoE to get them.

You just need a city with the CoE religion in it. CoE had spread in one of my cities, and I took the advantages accordingly. I love the amount of flexibility this game allow :).

Wow, the AI actually spread CoE to another Civ's city? I did not think it was doing that.

And, er... sorry for the slight derailment.
