I am new to this board and ran through the previous forums, but I did not see anything touching on this, so I apologize if this is a repeat of previous efforts.

In Civ II MPGE (maybe other versions also) you can 'see' where land is before exploring it. This is very handy when trying to find land to send your trireme to.

Here are some shots to illustrate this.

This one shows the unexplored territory but also lets you 'see' that land is there.

Look at the info panel on the right side of the screen. It says the cursor location is (99,81) 30. The 30 tells you that there is land in that square. Each continent has its own number and the Ocean is a 1.

This shot shows the same cursor location but with the entire map revealed.

I have some other screen shots to show the ocean is a 1 and other land is a different number, but you can check that on your own.

P.S. I tried to insert the images as I was told, but they don't seem to come up.??

Thanks Thunderfall. I guess it wasn't as simple as it looked.

Hello, duke! I hope that your territory includes Marlborough County, and not the one near Swindon, England or else I'll be looking to bribe your cities and steal your techs.
I think that it's always worthwhile to send out boats exploring rather than rely on your method, because I'd be tempted to build a city between two whales even if I didn't know how big the island was or what other resources it might have. Also, unless you move your boats around (preferably with the lighthouse then you won't find those little one- or two-square islands with goody huts on, which are ideal for bonuses because they can't produce barbs.

I'm not saying this is to replace normal exploration, but only to give you some direction when doing so.

The main times I might use this is when I don't see any land in sight that my Trireme can reach. Rather than send my Trireme on a possible suicide trip into deeper seas, I can check where land is. (Or you can just use the End Turn trick that makes it so your triremes don't sink even away from land.)

I may also use this when I encounter another Civ early in the game. If I can contain them, I usually box them in and build around them unitl I feel like killing them. But if they have large amounts of land behind them, I focus on killing them quickly. With this you can check behind them to see if they have a lot of land or a little.

It's just meant to let you 'see' where the land is that you want to send your ships to.

I was playing a game today and I noticed that the comp doesn't seem to be affected by the depths of blackness... I was following one of their ships and they dissapeard north into the black. Now LtHouse not built and the land they went to about 4or5 squares away in all direcdtions, there is no way I would have found that land w\out going all across the map first... and it was I think his first or second ship, he wouldn't have had time to do that... I don't get it. And the only reason I knew land was there was because of the 'seeing' thing.

Even though stuff happens that we don't plan, be a man... use you hand.

I'm in love and it's my job to make other people jealous.

Played a game last night that had the continent directly north of me listed as LOC (XX,XX) 1. Therefore, I didn't go exploring in that direction until a little later and was surprised to have a land mass that large near me. What made me go in that direction was that there were two bodies of water inside the continent that had a LOC greater than 1 (I think 36 was one of them). Imagine my surprise and chagrin when I stumbled on it.

Hopefully people can use this 'cheat' to get comfortable with the game, then once they get some good experience, they will (possibly?) stop using the cheats.

Besides, in a multiplayer game, you need to know everything you can, because most likely the other person knows it too.

You can bet your boots the other(s) know.
I've seen many a freeze followed by the message:
"Sorry.I was map clicking"

Call it what you like but since there is no way to stop it you might as well call it a feature.Anyone that blindly sails a trireme hoping for land...well...its not too smart.

There is a few ways to locate stuff in the game.Best familiarize yourself with them.

I had assumed everyone knew about this. Maybe I'll write a monolithic post on behavior of the core logic sometime.

The AI's triremes have a 0% chance of sinking. Effectively, they are Caravels if you want to think of them that way. The lighthouse is of no net value to the AI, except to produce veteran triremes. You should always endeavor to discover Magnetism before a large potential naval foe discovers Steam Engine, too... assuming you would like an easier time as a mid-game naval power (lest you face vet AI ironclads).

The AI engine is not allowed to have a foreknowledge of landmasses, so it discovers them the old-fashioned way... by exploration. But it's triremes will never sink during the search

No offense taken. ;p

I don't really consider it a cheat in as much as it's closer to intel gathering. Since the AI gets SO many advantages at Deity, I consider it a minor advantage. Especially since MY triremes still have the possibility of sinking if the info shows that the landmass is outside a 1 turn cruise.
