How do you usully select the AI you play against. Do you cherry pick or go for random? Also, how many, do you usually go for max or something less?

I had been picking what I thought might be easier AIs and less than max. Just started going for max and random. A lot more crowded and difficult to grow with out early war.

i always pick civ's in groups. So if I am america I pick a few western Civ's then a few Far East Civ's in a group and then Middle East and North Africa go. As for if I max out Civ's, I always have the most Civ's as I can(usally cause me problems but still).

Well I used to pick random all the time but since "culturally linked starting positions" is broke I pick 'em now. Unless of course I want to start next to the Native American Indian civs then I pick random ;)

Random all the way. Same story with hot/cold, wet dry, young/old, amount of land, and distribution of land. I prefer to find out the hard way.

I choose random civs with culturally linked starting positions. Sometimes I change victory conditions.

I prefer random with culturally linked starting positions, but as has already been pointed out, that option is currently broken, so I just go with random civs, no linked starts. Also, I do not check out which civs are in the game at the start by checking the space race--I prefer being surprised as I meet each civ.

Normally all random with CLSP off, although I sometimes try a specific set, such as all modern European Nations or all ancient Mediterranean civs.

Like sealman, I choose random across the board.

My current game (on a LAN with my brother) we set it to huge, mostly water and islands. He was Celtic, I was Portuguese. We appointed all the players so we'd play with seafaring civs only. It's loads of fun.

For some reason I like playing huge island food maps (5 billlion years, warm and wet, mostly h20). Maybe this is because I like navies? Arrharr!

Usually maximum, random opponents (or more than maximum modding the .biq). Occassionally I choose opponents -- all-Agricultural is *fun* to play against. (Celts, Dutch, Iroquois, Inca, Maya, Aztecs, Sumeria)

I always choose my on civ but put everyone else as random.
So much more fun having to find out who your opponents are.
But i cant have more than 11 opponents because my computer is too old and slow.

Well, I'm still a bit new to Civ (just bought vanilla Civ 3 a few weeks ago), but I get a kick out of picking civs that never came close to meeting in real history. I've been a longtime fan of what-ifs and might-have-beens, so I think it's cool to see Japan vs. Aztecs, Russia vs. Rome, etc.

I prefer Continent Maps....huge size....normal temperature/age/climate....against 6 or 7 random civs. :-)

I always pick which civ I'm going to be, then attempt to spread out the rest of the civs around the world (i play on a world map... the young dictator in me struggling to get out and take over everything.. or one to many episodes of pinky and the brain.) The only problem with that is that I awlays wind up playing aginst the Americans, Iriquo (spelling.. god im a bad speller), and Aztecs (I have PTW).
I really wish in one game Firaxis would put in a Civ to start in Australia. The continent really languishes until the industrial age anymore.

I normally go for all random, unless I want to try something specific, like "All Expansionist Civs".

I tired that before, and i found Shaka of the Zulu the most powerful Leader!

I usually pick some of the civs and let the others be random.

For me, having them all be random is what feels right.

However, when you are gonna play a higher difficulty level than you think you can manage with everything random, you could pick them to make it more likely for you to win.

This is most notably done on Sid games. Sid is very hard for even the best civ players. Most people who play sid choose a strategy before creating the game and adjust the map and opponents to that strategy. It is popular to play on archipellago maps with none of the opponents starting with alphabet while making sure you start with it. This way, your chances to get the GL are very big even on sid.
