SESN01 - The Poor Warmongering Fools

I just didn't see any reasonable way to get the techs and tie up our most productive city while trying to get some decent outcome from the war with Theodora...

There is probably an opportunity out there that I missed, though.

What about trying to finish up with Theodora quickly and having a force available to take it by sea once completed? We would probably need the zerk army to help us hold it, but that would really put a wrench in the works for Cleo. Any guesstimates how many turns before she completes it (I haven't the energy to look at the save right now)? I suppose a more pertinent question would be: is it being built in a coastal town? I would certainly rather take it from her by hook or by crook before she can really benefit from it, but I'm not sure how likely that may be.

Can't see Elephantine on any of the maps IIRC, so I don't believe it is coastal.

And taking it is better than building it as we need to finish these guys off before the IA, so can't spend the sheilds to build it anyway.

I got it and will play tonight.

I am definetly pro eliminating Theodora now. We have 17 turns till we can attack Egypt and it would be nice to have another army till then, so we need to press on. Otherwise we will just sit around with our now - for the moment - superior attacking unit. We should not waste to much time, as our advantage will diminish soon.

Okay, Bede has pondered and now proposes this plan:

Take Adrianople with the Archer Army and use it as forward staging base for amphib assault on Constan. I think the cities are close enough that galleys can land zerks in Constan in one move from Adrianople. Last thing we want to do is expose our loaded galleys to the dreaded dromon. A land invasion is also feasible though getting to Constan with defense 2 'zerks against attack 2 archers could be dicey, as there is a fair amount of open ground with roads once the mountains are crossed. A 'zerk army with covering spears would work. The spears are there to absorb the weakened archer attack after the defense bombard from the zerks. Once the zerk army is in position shoot the archers out of Adrianople to soften the defense and Constan should crumble. Trebs are going to be in the next to useless category unless shipped by way of Adrianople because of the mountains and jungle on the approach to Constan.

Pre Turn: switch Eindhoven to galley, wake galley in Trondheim and move it, fire 3 of the 4 tax collectors in Copenhagen and 2 of the 3 in Groningen, switch Heraklea to warrior as we have a resister but no units in there

IBT: Copenhagen beserk-berserk, Eindhoven galley-galley, Birka worker-harbor

570AD: lose to vet archers to reg spearmen (both -1), elite archer kills reg archer (-1), army kills 2 spears in Adrianiople (-2) and takes it, we have ivory and no need for any specialists anymore

IBT: resistance in Adrianople ends, Bergen beserk-beserk

580AD: nothing special

IBT: Reykjavik spear-spear, Stockholm spear-trebuchet

590AD: archer army kills vet archer, zerk army kills two reg spears and our golden age starts, switch Trondheim to aqueduct, Bergen to marketplace

IBT: Theo wastes an acher vs a fortified spear, it seems she moves her dromons to Constantinople - that would really be nice of her, Groningen market-, temple, Aarhus harbor-galley, Starvanger trebuchet-market

600AD: nothing special

IBT: Theo wants peace, we dont, Oslo berserk-temple, Arnhem harbor-galley, Hareid barracks-spear, Egypt and Koreans start Leos

610AD: just again...

IBT: Copenhagen beserk-beserk, Reykjavik spear-trebuchet, Trebizond barracks-spear, 3 palace pieces (2 saved I guess)

620AD: troops ready to take Constantinople next round, Copenhagen produces a zerk every 3 rounds now

IBT: Eindhoven galley-galley, Stockholm trebuchet-marketplace, Heraclea warrior-galley

630AD: siege on Constantinople: archer army kills elite spear (-6), army attacks reg spear and retreats after doing 1 dmg, vet archer kills reg spear (-2) and promotes, vet archer dies to reg spear doing no dmg, vet archer does 2 dmg to vet spear, elite archer kills reg spear and ...drumrolll... vet spear kills wounded vet spear, promotes takes Constantinople, 41 gold, the great library and sinks the dreaded dromons, we get 6 resisters and start a settler, talking to Theo reveals, she has just one city left and it seem not to be worthwhile to take it, but I leave the decision of making peace with her to the next player

IBT: we get monotheism and chivalry, Hareid spear-market, Oslo temple-beserk

640AD: preparing for war with egypt, 2 zerks and a spear in Birka to attack Buto and moving a sizeable force near Avaris

IBT: Bergen market-beserk, Copenhagen berserk-berserk, resistance in Heraclea finally ends, Birka harbor-spear

650AD: moving troops

IBT: Constantinople goes into civil disorder due to resistors, Groningen temple-galley, Aarhus galley-temple

660AD: declare on Egypt, pay Shaka 95gpt and dyes to join in, capture a slave and kill a charriot near Buto, capture slave near Constantinople

Our stack is in the mountains between Molde and Avaris. It contains enough worker to hurry a road for trebuchets. Our smaller force including the archer army is stil in Constantinople to heal. Our galleys are in the southeast of our continent. I wanted to use them to take out the last Bycantine city and attack Egyte near the Zulu border. That may have been a mistake as it took longer to get them around the landmass than I thought, sorry. Two zerks and a spear are near Buto. Constantinople still has two resisters, but it should end next round and we could hurry a barracks to heal troops there.

Good luck!

Very nice turns!

With GA let's switch Copenhagen to Kinghts Templar - we can build it in 11 turns. If there is a tile that we can change irrigation to mine to speed it up one turn, let's also do it, but not at the cost of negative food.

AIs are all building Sun Tzu's and Leos. I think we have a chance of getting KT, especially of most of them have Invention already - they will probably cascade into Leo's which I don't believe will be built within 11 turns.

We should also start prebuild for Sistine Chapel which can cascade into other wonders.

You could use that trick SirPleb did with the GL and gift the city to a really weak civ. Use your cash to rush Zerks and infrastructure and stay away from education. Then when it looks like they are in IA retake the city and gather all the techs.

Yes we could do that, but this is Monarch, and the trick was used in deity/sid level. Although this game had a very difficult start, it is Monarch anyway, so I'd personally like to take the tech lead all the way from now on (or after kicking some ass out of Egypt).

@barbslinger: Personally I am not a big fan of exploits like that - not that I don't respect discovering the idea. But if we chose to do, ok.

@microbe: I won't build any wonder. I think it is better for us to capture them and build more zerks. The next big thing we should build is the forbidden palace once we have a piece of Egypts territory.

It depends which wonder. We can give up on all others, but I really want KT. A 5/3 units will be the best units for us. We now only have defense 2 units. It's also cheap - just at a cost of about 4 zerks we'll get a steady stream of crusaders in at least the next 80 turns. I'd like to see us building up infra during GA instead of all military. I also would like to have JS bach's for happiness reasons, but maybe capture it is better.

I really like it, too, but I like Cleo to build it for us, but I guess thats just a matter of taste. What really would be bad, is missing it and getting into a wonder cascade which leaves us with building a colosseum. 4 Zerks is 24 attack - I think thats a lot - but I stop argumenting now - sry if I bug you

Hate to bring this up, but GRS should not have declared on Egypt. Per LK's rules we agreed to, we had to let trade agreements run their course, and at the end of the previous save, we had 17 turns of peace w/Cleo in a dye for wine deal. On capturing KT, first we're assuming Cleo gets it, but Incas are building it too, both in their #4 cities, so I believe they're close to the core. And per the idea of capturing, if it's close to Thebes, the flip risk will be high. It has to be captured and held some time to be of value. I definitely agree with Microbe, Cleo's almost certainly had her GA, and our own production boost should get us there first if we squeeze out every shield possible. Boost the lux rate if we have to in order to keep them all working. We want to beat Inca's to it also, as they will almost certainly be the owner of that continent. Korea doesn't stand a chance, and Iroquois are behind in tech. It's only a matter of time there.

Of course you're right M60. I completely zoned and missed that one, thanks for catching it. The question now is: how do we remedy this? Do we continue on? Replay the ten? Replay from an autosave, if GRS still has it? More than caring about the rep hit, which can be overcome in time, I'm unhappy that a rule was broken. I haven't seen this in any SG I've participated/lurked in, so I'm unsure how to proceed.

EDIT: I have PM'ed Lkendter to see what he would have done, and he implied that the impact on the game was the important part so I guess we can continue on. One rep hit can be overcome, but please try to avoid any others.
