Sesn03 - Bad Apple Goes To War

Sorry for the delay in getting this going, gents.

Sesn can always come up with a more challenging start. Or bump it up to DG.

Or both. :p

Well, I bumped it up to DG, so I did roll a couple different starts. Seemed like every start either had FP/jungle, or two cows/wheat. Decided on this one:
Sesn03_start.jpg

Move to the far side of the river to settle, and see a GH which will give us 25g next turn.

Start on BW. When the borders expand, discover that a move NE would have gotten us a factory. *shrug*

Our opponents are: Hittites, Sumerians, Greeks, Celts, Dutch, Vikings, and Arabs.

Pop a hut in 3150 that gives us a settler. :D

BW comes in, start on WC. Not too worried about the Wheel yet.

Settle Memphis in 3050 BC. Actually four tile away instead of three, but that puts it on a hill with immediate access to a fish.

See some Hittite(?) borders pretty close to the SW.

Recap: Basically turtled up until we had some defenders. Once we have a spear or two, I’ll feel much better about going exploring, I was just worried about someone else being right on top of us (like the Hittites are). Remember, no trading on first contact.

We’ll just go by the roster in the first post to make it easy, unless Romeo needs to be lowered in the lineup as he hinted he may.

Romeo – UP
M60 – On Deck

Haha, well I can't complain about that start any! And a settler to boot -- well, that almost makes up for the extra settler the AIs get, doesn't it?
I was actually a bit disappointed to see the game tile. I'm glad I settled where I did tho, a factory would have been too good.

I will need to be dropped in ye olde roster
No problem, do you want me to just slot you in last?

M60 - UP
SW - On Deck

2950BC- Pull the warrior back northeast as he’s close enough to Hittites known location.

2750BC- Lux to 30% with pop 5 in Thebes.

2670BC- Another Hittite town comes a bit closer to home, but still no contact. Find a barb camp with a patrol warrior 5 NE of Thebes.

2630BC- I put a spear in garrison at Memphis, so switch warrior to worker.
Back science down with WC in 1.

2590BC- Thebes settler>archer. Memphis worker>warrior. Science to 90%, pottery in 7. Head the settler NE along the river.

2550BC- Move the settler NE onto a hill. Next up can settle there or go one more NE, but that puts him up against barb camp. Very low risk, but still a risk. And done. Still no contact, pottery in 6.

The save

I would settle in place.
Next settler should North of Memphis and Thebes and make a triangle with those 2 towns.

What kind of spacing are we aiming for here? Seems like Romeo is suggesting an OxxO spacing, which seems a good idea considering once we get a contact we'll be at war.

I like the simplicity of Romeo's plans -- settle in place plus city between Thebes and Memphis will give us an easily defendable structure without worrying about river crossings, but it doesn't do a great job of getting cities interlocked for defenses. Don't know if that's as big a priority in OW as AW, but here's an alternative dotmap to consider.

What I like about this one is it puts more cities into the area we have already explored. But it has to deal with river crossings interfering between some cities. And it's not nearly as aesthetically pleasing as the alternative :crazyeye:

I think Red dot and hill are the best options availible at the moment.

I think on the OW strategy, it's important to get out and uncover as much terrain as possible as soon as the first war starts. That way we can get trading and allying, etc ASAP.

preturn - up lux to avoid riots.

1- settle (HELIOPOLIS) on the hill, its connected. move to chop game woods for a rax.
2- Thebes archer > temple (granary prebuild). lower sci 2 notches - still in 3.
3- start connecting. archer arrives to clear those barbs.
4- archer kills one barb. lower sci another notch.
5- Pots are in. go for wheel. kill another barb.
6- archer gets 25g from the camp, killing a horseman. warrior defends worker.
7- archer is redlined by the attacking horseman but is now of E status.
8- healing. not exploring.
9- Memphis warrior > worker,

IBT - we have contact!
the Hittites have Alpha and MYST on us. aswell as 4 extra towns.
declare.

10- Thebes granary > settler.

advanced the 2 warrior blocaders a notch.
moved warrior and archer closer to trouble.

enjoy our first war.

Got it.

Ah, a war for me? :p Looks like i'll be defensive and try to expand north and east and explore everywhere I can. Will settle red dot and send someone out of Heliopolis to go exploring unless they send a lot toward us early on. Not really much of a military to send someone out... Anyway, I'll look for comments and play tonight or tomorrow morning.

I would try and get us another worker or 2 in the next turn set. One of the biggest problems with AW or OW is lack of early development.
Our Tech Path should follow the AI's to get us a discount.
Keep scouting, now contacts are really good.

Concur, because we can't settle normally, getting our cities producing well is of extra importance.

Hopefully, TW will give us horses so we can make up for lost scouting time.

Okay, not too hot on the military front. The hittites came with a stack of warriors up towards Heliopolis, but they didn't do any harm. Every time I tried to attack the rng turned against me. The thing to watch for, though, is that the Hittite's main stack came from due east of Heliopolis; they may have towns out there, or maybe just sensed that it was the weak point of our empire.

Tried to get another worker out there, but mostly focused on military to be safe from any Hittite incursion. Thebes needs to build either a settler or a worker soon; don't think we want it at size six for too long right now. I was thinking I'd have it timed to build a worker with growth to six, but i mixed myself up.

Good news is that we have horses! They are sitting right under Memphis. There's a War Chariot already made and fortified in Thebes; it can head out for scouting (it was staying around for MP duty as troops were tight for a little bit). I have scouted a bit to the north and found nobody yet, but I also have alphabet coming in 3 or 4 turns, so we'll have Curraghs to help with the exploration soon enough.

Important dates:

2030BC -- learn Wheel

1990BC -- Settle Elephantine on the red dot.

1830BC -- Hittites slaughtered at battle of Heliopolis.

Oh, and I think I forgot to up luxuries to 30% to prevent Thebes from rioting (this from looking at the pic I have), so next person please double-check that for me.

Also look to swap out the mined BG to Hel from Thebes two out of every three turns (swap with a forest) to help Heliopolis grow.
