Sesn03 - Bad Apple Goes To War

I can't swap tongight. I am headed to sleep soon, and cannot play until tomorrow night at the earliest.

Hey, I can play!

Switch some builds around, esp cities w/o barracks building units. Lots of Libraries in corrupt cities, too; I can't see any reasoning for them in the write-up so I switch them to something more useful.
Military Academy comes in 7; will stop afterwards to let Bede have his fun.

IBT - Arabs want to talk. They'll give us Econ, but that's not nearly enough.
Lose a cav, kill an ansar.

Sumerians complete Universal Suffrage

1) 1010AD
Found Asyut

Some units doing MA duty in our core towns are un-needed; I am moving them up to the front (after upgrades).
Wow, I'm just going to have to attack with elites, guys. There aren't enough troops otherwise. There really isn't enough even with elites.
Drop luxuries to 30% and move some MPs around to keep people happy.
Kill two rifles and an ansar [4-1]

IBT-
Kill an ansar
Embargo against us between Netherlands and Arabs is over
Sumerians declare war.

Lose a cav

Oh dear God...

Well, I would have kept going without posting, but then I noticed how many of them there were. And then I saw the infantry and guerillas. And then I wet myself.

I think I know what needs to be done; it just isn't going to be pretty so I want a second opinion.

The worst thing about that pic is that Sumeria has essentially cut off our army and most of our artillery from our main cities.

Our best/only choice at the moment is to immeadiately ally Greece against Sumeria.
It might be wise to plan on dumping all our spare units up to defense, and letting us defend heavily.
One good thing about Sumeria Declaring is the regaining of all our resources to trade away to others.

First, put the lux tax from 30 to zero. Second, Turn science off. Third, peace and 94gpt to Arabs for Magnetism and ToG. That sends us into the IA. Fourth, embassy with Greece. That will about wipe out our little cash pile. Get alliance for whatever it takes. If you can get enough gold the same turn from Greece for luxes, buy an embassy in Amsterdam and try to ally the Dutch against Sumeria as well. That will complicate Sumerias position immensely. If we have those two as allies, Gilgamesh may have to rush his troops back to the homeland. Whatever cash we have left, we need to get steam so we can get railing.

Okay, I just finished up Com2 while waiting for you guys. I'm glad we can get alliances. What about our towns east of the Sumerian stack? I'm inclined to abandon those to free up those troops.

Time to make dinner now; will play afterwards.

Okay, played a bit. We are still alive. Our troops held on marvelously on the IBT after I posted and I've scrapped every last troop I can from the core. A friend just called and is in town so I will not be able to get to this until later if at all tonight.

2) 1020AD
Massive war happiness from Sumeria declaring, so lux goes to 0. (Thanks, M60.)
Peace + 94gpt to Arabs for ToG + Magnets + 2g.
Embassy with Greece for 113g. Down to 11g in treasury.
MA vs. Sumeria with Greece costs us 19gpt + WM. I up it to 24gpt and Greece gives us an 82g loan.
Embassy with Netherlands for 86g. Down to 7g.
MA vs. Sumeria with Dutch costs us 21gpt + WM.
Netherlands loans us 47g at cost of 3gpt for 20 turns. Damn loan sharks.
Use that gold to buy an embassy with the Arabs.
MA & ROP vs. Sumeria with Arabs costs us 15gpt + WM. Arabs chip in 2g to boot.
I do an ROP because it's the only way I can get our troops in their territory out quickly.
That's every major player against Sumeria; with luck the Vikings will join for free.

Still, this all sucks.
13 Sumerian cavalry are in range of 4 different cities, one of which is undefended. The others are lightly defended.
I would normally consider gifting towns to neutral civs, but that would eliminate our "border." So I will hold the line as best I can.

The AI did not attack Burdigala first, so I am going to assume they will not attack a city with a healthy army fortified in it.
If I kill all the open cavalry and knight units, I may be able to plant the army in Asyut and save most of our cities. Burdigala is out to dry, though.
As a contingency, workers will be building fortifications throughout the isthmus. If Sumeria gets past the first cities, we have to hold them at the isthmus.

Kill 8 cavs and 2 knights, losing 2 cavs. [10-3]
Sell barracks in Burdigala for 10g. Gift town to the Arabs.

Science to 20%. MM through every town, creating scientists where it is beneficial.
Steam in 18 turns.

Unfortify and move as many units as I dare; pikes, MDIs, swords mostly. Don't want to pull much from our west because Sumeria is right across the water that way. Man, just one infantry right now would be devastating.
Okay, here goes...

IBT-
Not the best start... Scandinavia declares on the Dutch.
Burgidala is captured by the Sumerians.
We lose cavs and knights out in the open. 3 cavs and 1 knight but also kill a knight.
The telling moment comes with Sumerian 2/4 cav attacking Eboracum, defended by a 2/4 cav. We redline and then win.
Most of the large stack heads back east.
So we are okay for now. [12-6]

3) 1030AD
Kill 2 cavs with army, but the last one drops the army from 10/13 to 5/13. Hope it holds... Shore up the town with cannons and a cav for defense.
Kill a knight with a cav. [15-6]

I'd trade luxes for cash, but we have no available trade routes right now.

IBT-
Scandinavia signs an MA with Greece against Sumeria
Greeks come to our aid with several cavalry
Sumerians seen losing 2 cav, 1 LB, 1 MDI, and 1 Guerilla
Greeks lose 4 cav and 4 rifles.

The stack comes back towards us.

We catch Sumerians trying to plant a spy in our capital.

4) 1040AD
We kill 1 Knight, 1 Rifleman, 2 Pikemen, 1 MDI, 2 Archers
With no losses [22-6]

Guess I found a bug in CivAssistII. It says I have trade routes open but the game says otherwise.

IBT-
Hittites and Sumerians sign trade embargo. Will move troops in case Hittites start getting ideas.
Greeks lose 6 cav and Sumerians only 3 LBs

The stack is back and it is knocking on our door.

5) 1050AD
Our cannons are pretty useless against infantry. Out of 15 tries we score 2 hits.

Going to try moving the army around to try and get the stack going back and forth. Either that or I have to give up two towns.

Army kills an infantry easily.
Also kill 1 knight, 2 pikes, 2 cavs, and 1 MDI [29-6]

IBT-
See a Sumerian rifle go down
Stack is bypassing Virus-Ville with the army in, moving on to Asyut

6) 1060AD
Kill a knight and a pike
Shuffle healthy troops to defend Virus-Ville and was supposed to move the army to Asyut to defend but forgot! :wallbash:
Cannons hurt 2 infantry, but have not yet been able to concentrate fire on the stack.

IBT-
Greeks move in 10 cav on a nearby hill to draw Sumerian fire.
Of those 10 cavs, 4 survive taking out 1 MDI, 4 Infantry, 2 Guerillas, and a Rifleman.
Sumerians Seige Asyut, but I am lucky! They move half the stack on to the next town and attack only half-heartedly.
We lose 1 cav defending the town, but kill 1 Guerilla and 1 Infantry (they attacked across the river!)

Military Academy is built. Time to hand off to Bede. Let's hope the bad apple takes pity on our situation.

Current Situation:
Sesn03_1070AD_InTheTrenches.jpg

I have been waiting for a leader to pop with all the elite victories I've had, but so far we've been unlucky... or maybe lucky.

Tally so far is 33-7 and most of our losses were in the first IBT; I'm not counting battles spotted from Greek and Sumerian fights, just ones we're a part of.

As for my war plans, I've been targetting the faster Sumerian units first, part because they make us defend more and part because the AI is stupid and runs them out ahead of their massive stack. By now we just see the odd cav or knight and the stack is of primary concern.

Edit: Whoops! Bede can't do much w/o the save!

I ditto M60. we shouldn't have Bede cut in now. Pind should finish the 10 turns.
Nice recovery.

Variants
Bad Apple - The bad apple gets to come in and perform one action of his choosing at certain times in the game......

The times that the bad Apple gets to come in are at any of the following points: MGL creation, destroying a civ, anarchy, first turn of GA.

When one of these things happens, the player must stop and save the game immediately, let the Bad Apple do his deed, then take the new save and finish out their turns.

No mention here of Wonder Buildings, Great or Small, so I say carry on pin'.

Darn!!!!

All we were saying was that since the creation of a MGL is a reason for Bede to step in, did we want to increase our chance of generating them by building the Heroic Epic. The decision was that we would take our chances and do it.

Yeah, i caught that part of it, but there was discussion of some kind about "major events" and from what was said I interpretted it (although going back I dont' see it ever explicitly said) to include Great and Small Wonder creation.

In any case, my bad and I'll finish up.

7) 1070AD
Bombard Sumarian infantry.

1st Contingency line is set up

It's funny seeing MDIs killing infantry...
Kill 3 Infantry, 1 Guerilla
Lose 1 MDI & 1 cav.

Kill a knight with a cav...

okay, now I know I hand it off this time

The devil will make me do it, whatever it may be. I got it, but need to sleep on it.

Watch this space in the morning.

Felt sorry for old Mursi, I did, I did. :mischief:

Ouchies, I say. Hmm.
Do we cross the line of breaking our own rep to relcaim our heritage, or suffer a lot longer?
Where is our Moses?
I think Bede has been reading too much about Ramses II, also known as Ramses the pretty good.
