Sometimes a player (not necessarily a beginner) just needs to set a personal goal and then try and achieve it. Forget the games victory conditions for awhile.

My advice to my "Nubie friend" is to build and hold 5 cities.

That's the kind of goal that I still set for myself (at higher levels than I can normally win at). :)

My challenge to "Nubie" is post a game save (where you've created and held at least 5 cities for 20 turns) any difficulty.

Typically, you'll find game save files in your computer/program files/Firaxis/Civilization III/saves. You can attach the files into these threads by using additional options, manage attachments etc..

Ask questions, everyone will help you.

Thanks Divaythsarmour, I will work toward creating and holding 5 cities and let you know successful I am at that challenge.

I posted the following on January 12th and wanted to make sure you saw it.

Good luck building your civilizations, both in life and in the game.

Hi Everyone,
This is my first post to this site. I received Civilization III from a very good friend and I am hoping he sees that am moving forward. I have never played any of the Civilization games hence the name "Civilnubie. I am anxious to get started on this journey. I will most likely be back here looking for help very soon.

Thank you to my very special friend. I will meet with you in Civilization cyber space.

Welcome to CFC, Civilnubie. As you play more games of civ3, your goals can grow as you grow as a player. Moving up a level, winning by a certain date, winning by all types of VC, beating a certain score, etc. are all goals I have after playing nearly 10 years, some I've met, others not. Right now, as an example, my goals are to win at emperor level with every tribe and/or hit the ever elusive 10,000 point mark. Good playing to you!

You want to do this on a standard sized map, right, and you don't want to do it as a histographic game? My suggestion for a standard sized map would come as to play as the Iroquois on Demi-god or Deity, 80% dry pangea, with a river and cow start. Play with minimum opponents with no one scientific. Build a granary in the capital and then use it as a settler factory until you have a ring of cities around the capital. Do a minimum run on Writing, and trade your way to Horseback Riding. Once you have Horseback Riding shut research off. Train some workers as normal, then barracks and mounted warriors. Then go out and go for the domination win playing keep and capture. Max non-scientific opponents can also work, but then forget the granary in the capital and build about 5 cities.

Welcome to Civfanatics, Civilnubie.
After you've done that, I'd recommend trying to conquer someone. In most victory conditions, with the exception of cultural, it is quite handy to have "swallowed" at least 1 enemy civ.

Definitely, yes. Swallowing another Civ is fun, too!
I believe you're talking about 20K cultural. With 100k cultural, I've found it is quite handy to "swallow" an enemy civ.

And Welcome, Civilnubie!:)

Hi Nubie,
I was looking at the rules to see when you could have a custom avatar. It appears to be after 30 days from your registration and 30 posts. I'll design one for you (if you want me to).

You're going to make a lot of friends on this site. :) There's a ton of information, strategy, tactics and stories. Most posters on these threads are much better players than I am, so you can expect my game advise to be thoroughly scrutinized:crazyeye:

5 cities is a nice goal to have. While you're expanding, you'll research "iron working", which will reveal iron to you on your map. IMO that's the most important resource in the early game. As you expand, try to settle close to iron and have your workers build a road to it. Another great resource is horses... they allow you to build horsemen which are nice because they can move quickly.

Consider your build order for your first city and your secondary cities. It's nice if you can turn out settlers as often as possible from your first city. You'll note that each time you create a settler you lose population. Therefore you may want to build other things in-between, i.e. a granary, barracks, plenty of defensive units... Don't forget to build workers in your secondary cities and keep improving the terrain with roads, mines and irrigation.

Settle next to rivers whenever possible. That will allow your city populations to max at 12 without having to build aqueducts. One of the biggest problems you'll face is unhappiness in your cities (cities burning - no production). There are many different ways you can minimize or eliminate that. My advise is to keep it simple for now and just contact the city governor and have him manage happiness in all cities. Doing this will cost you in terms of production as more of your population will be working as artist etc. versus more productive.. But you've always been one who appreciates the arts :)and it will help you to avoid having to micro manage the problem.

So anyway, good luck, keep on posting and I'll work on your avatar.

take care,
Divaythsarmour

Don't use the governor. Ever. Use a program like MapStat to help manage happiness.

nubie,

My challege is to move progressively toward a game with fully random settings. That shows the most skill since you go in completely blind.

My first goals were (IIRC)
  • Survive until end; I may not win but I also won't be killed :D.
  • Win a game, any manner.
  • Win a game by culture, inspired by an article in the War Academy.
  • Win without building a Great Wonder (capturing allowed), also inspired (challenged) by an article in the War Academy.
  • Win a diplomatic game.
Conquest and Domination were very similar and winning the Space Race was a given. But I had to make myself try for Culture and Diplomatic victories.

Then my goals became:
  1. Move to Monarch from Chieftain and win that first game.
  2. Join a Succession Game.
  3. Start/Host a Succesion Game.

Lastly, my current goals are
  • Have a game in the Hall of Fame.
  • Achieve the Machivellian Award (winning with each victory condition) on a Huge, Pangea map at Monarch with the standard number of random AIs and playing as a random civ (I don't decide, the game does, both for me and my opponents).
I'm on the last goal right now, trying for a 20K city, to get in that last victory condition for Machivelli. It is also the first time I've tried for this VC. It hasn't been pretty. It looks I can win with 20K but it will be around 2048 or 2049 AD. And that is if I can get some wonders built! Right now my city hits 20K of culture on turn 555 of 540, so I've still got some work to do.

All of which is to say that your goals don't have to big and grand.

Have fun!

Bob,
Thanks for sharing your goals. I only recently won a Monarch level game. I returned to Civ 3 several months ago and really enjoyed going at it again.

I think I like the music in 3 more than 4. I also really like it when you get a great person from a battle with an elite unit.

My only problem right now is that I recently upgraded to a Windows Vista 64 bit laptop. I don't seem to be able to install Civ 3 on it. I'm even having trouble playing Civ 4 on it. I gave my older XP computer to my son.

In the tech forum I've seen some threads on Civ 3 and Vista. My box is still XP.

Don't be afraid to try for the HOF. Not all the tables (each Size, VC and Difficulty has a seperate table) are full. Huge, Conquest, Monarch, for instance, only has four entries in a table for ten.
