okay for my first time in my 2+ years playing civ, i have eliminated a civ, only to find through my spies that they have a frigate, a galley, a settler, and a warrior, somewhere in my large continental/archpegio (by the way this is the first time i played more than a few turns sucsessfuly managing a democracy, and WOW! i can't believe war werriness, even w/ Uni Suf) and i was wondering if you have any idea on what to do (i'm currently in the modern age, and no longer at war w/ them if you need to know) i'm thinking going from pole to pole with a bunch of ships, but that is just to impractical for me, as it really isn't worth the effort to me, i was wondering if you guys have any tricks to getting rid of those pesky english. (P.S. i figured out aparently the english can build botht the man-o-war & the frigate

I had a similar problem in a recent game. I eliminated all cities of the Vikings, but they still showed up in the diplomacy menu. It was to early in the game for spies, so I couldn't tell what units they had, but trading maps with them didn't reveal their location. (No cities, I guess they became nomads.)

The only way I could get rid of them completely was to give them back one of their old cities (a small worthless one, of course) and then take it re-capture it. That removed them from the game for good.

you sure the frigate isnt a galeon?

anyway, I think the best thing you could do if you really want to destroy them is to get a bunch of destroyers (fast ships). Then spaced them out diagonally with 6 square inbetween them and then fortify (this gives tem an extra range of sight). Enevtually, after wasting enough shields on the ships you WILL find them.

Another suggestion (making this up right now--not sure if it will work) is to secure small island, and empty it of units and cities, hoping the settler will go there. When it does, unload your marines or whatever units

You can use the "Steal Plans" espionage mission to find out where their ships are (assuming your spy is in place). Then send a few DDs out to sink them - much quicker and easier than hunting them blind, though it does cost some $$$.

That is what I usually do before I destroy their last city. Moreover, I always plan things in advance so that when I take their last city, I also terminate their last settler too because every second that they're still alive, there is a chance that some cities will flip back to them). Also note that we can't spy on them if they have no capital.

Oops, forgot you can't spy if they have no cities. My bad.

How about a peace treaty? You can make their teretory map a condition of peace.

Find 'em
Declare war
Kill 'em

but the wouldn't the sttler still be in the boat when i conquer it?

BTW: getting thier territory map won't hlp, they don't have any cities, and i've discovered the whole map, and like i said, destroyers just aren't really an option, for time & production reasons.

but still redstoner, let me know how this workered

The settler is probably going towards where there is empty land to build a city. So look in that direction. If there is no empty land, then make one by abandoning a useless city if you have extra. It will probably then comes towards you.

Although since you are in modern and they are nomads, you could just take off science research, and use the extra money to rush destroyers. That would work, just take forever. :(

Couple of tips for you to deal with war weariness considering everybody else answered your other question:

1. Police Stations are good in every city with universal sufferage to reduce war weriness.

2. Be sure to have plenty of happiness inducing improvements, i.e. Temples, Cathedral's (Perferably with Sisten's double effect), and Coloseums.

3. Luxuries are very helpful. Try to aquire all 8. 8 lux plus a marketplace = 20 :) and that is all somebody would need.

money is no object, but i've been thinking of going with a LOT of privateers, because then i don't have to declare war, althoughi'm not so sure they'll get very far, the AI likes to use ironclads i found out in this game, so i may sendthem under a ironclad of my own for protection, but i've pretty much given up hope, i really don't needthe British gone that badly, it's been so long ago, they are producing so much culture, a flip is unheard of.

Actually the best modern search technique would be to load a carrier with jet fighters and recon. Same effect as about 7 ships.

well i found them (through cheating, i couldn't find any other way) i gave them back a city, stole plans, found out where thier ship was, reloaded my old game (and to be fair i soent the 110 gold the spy operation cost on useless aid to japan, that was prety much gone next turn) , sent some subs, and blasted the heck out of that frigate (yes, i'm sure it was a frigate) and galley. i'd post a screenshot, but iuse a different computer, just in case your wondering, if I was playing on a map of the world, in relation to a flat northern hemisphere perspective, they were around the southern tip of S. america, my capital was around egypt, and thier old empire was in china, i think they try to get as far away from your capital as posssible, not sure if this is true, if you've had a settler in boat where they were

Frigate and a galley makes sense, as the AI likes to escort their transport ships.

Doing what Moonsinger said is probably best. Then you know about where the AI is, and can send ships after them. But I like the idea with reconning a carrier with jet planes. Never thought of that one.

maybe I'm missing the point here but if the settler is in a boat and there is nowehere to settle why not leave them to sail around the world forever?

If the civ in questions still exists even if they don't have a city to call home, any captured cities can flip back to them... in spite of your pacification efforts and cultural buildup. I had this happen in the most recent GOTM where I had banashed a CIV to the a settler in a boat. 6 turns into the peace and they had managed to found a city on a 2 square island and a former city of theirs culture flipped to them. I had to wait 14 turns for the peace to expire so I didn't take the rep hit before I could retake the city. That's a lot of production considering this was part of the inner ring around my forbidden palace.

I had a similar thing happen to me accept the boat+settler sat just off my coastline, and never really moved. There was no free terrain to settle on, so the civ just stayed put. Once the 20 turn peace treaty expired, I sunk them and moved on. I don't think there is any logic to where the ship would hide, it simply stops moving when it is no longer at war, and there is no land to settle.

I would have signed MA's with all the other civs I didn't intend fighting soon against them. This has worked for me two or three times. Sending units into the unsettled regions of the map is tedious, but the only other way (as Qitai stated).

When it happens on a large Pangea where you haven't built a single boat, it tends to get up your nose a bit.
