So a while ago I tryed to settle a square that was not "free-range" and I got the warning, "this will start a war with the Xxxxxxxx......".

So I did not.

This gave me the idea though that during wartime, I could grab some tiles.

This became handy recently when I was in a hard fought battle with little gain, even though I was baiting the troops into my territory to kill them.

I advanced a settler, pushed my border, fortified with troops, and then Laid in heavy with Cruise Missles now that they could reach from the safety of my territory.

Anyway, It just occured to me the other day, so thought it may help someone.

Also, the best way to lure them into your land for slaughter is to make their land yours!:D

yeah, I too noticed that warning during my "early days" of civving (which wasn't too long ago ) and only now have been using it to my advantage during war!! It was definitely fun the first time I did it :goodjob:

I once had an AI place a city in my territory during peacetime. Naturally, I crushed him in the ensuing war. :smug:

No, I think it's just a rare bug or something like that

so did you declare on the AI, or did the AI settling cause the war?

It automatically triggers a war

Sometimes, if the AI is defeated for all but a settler, it founds right where it is standing. So if a settler happened to be in your territory, it would establish a city there, no matter the consequences (war). I think I saw this happen in a SG once.

This civ wasn't eliminated though. Still had plenty of cities.

My mistake. I found the thread I posted on it, and GA is right. That is exactly what happened.
