Settler vs Worker

What is your first production in the first turn?

Make your choice. My option is the settler and then a worker.

Dif Level: Monarch (please put yours).

Worker without any question. Then you can get some tiles improved, and possibly chop rush a settler later on. Then either a warrior or two or Stonehenge till my city has grown enough to build a settler fast, or I have bronze working to chop rush it. Quite often I'll put some progress towards stonehenge, then switch to the settler and chop rush it, and then switch back. Only works with some civs though as you need the right starting techs. Mostly on Monarch difficulty level at the moment.

Warrior. Then either scout or warrior.

Then it depends on if I'll have anything to do with a worker by the time one is built. If I will, then I'll build a worker, then a settler (maybe with a warrior to protect it first, depending on circumstances). But if I can't use a worker, I'll build a settler first, then a worker to connect the cities.

Oh, and difficulty level: mostly Warlord atm, sometimes Noble.

If forced to choose from the two, a settler would be my choice, then two or three warriors (defensive and fog busters) and then a worker.

Without the "settler vs. worker" requirement, I almost always build a warrior first.

I play on Warlord presently... I'm not quite up to snuff at that level honestly but I beat Chieftain so readily that it isn't even worth playing.

Adaptable.

I usually play as Catherine, and thus usually make a Warrior while my capital grows to size 2. Doing so helps me scout the surrounding area better, and the more information I have, the more advantage I can leverage out of her Creative trait by knowing where I need to put cities to ensure that the best sites are either settled or secured for later backfill. Following that, what I make depends on the situation.

However, I do NOT force myself to use this opening every time. If there's a tile that I really want improved - like Gold - in my capital's "fat cross", I'll make a Worker right off the bat. Likewise if my starting scouting unit finds a good enough city site quick enough, I might switch over to a Settler.

Difficulty: Prince

Almost always worker first. If I start with water resources work boats may be considered, the key thing is that I start improving tiles early on. What follows depends on what I am doing about hunting.

If I started with a scout (i.e. had hunting has a starting tech) or I started with a warrior but am not interested in researching hunting yet, then I go with
Warrior
Warrior
Settler

If I started with a warrior and am researching (or have researched) hunting then I would go with
Warrior
Scout
Settler

I find starting this way often leaves me behind on score initially but what does that matter. :)

Oh and I watch my city closely before starting the settler. If the city will grow within the next couple of turns I may delay starting the settler by queueing a barracks and then inserting a settler once the city has grown.

Difficulty: Prince or Monarch.

Really depends, but under normal circumstances on Emperor:

First unit goes looking for second city site, and will fortify near it, close enough to the capital so that the settler will not go through any FOW on his way there. Capital builds...

Worker
Worker
Settler
Warrior (to defend capital, as it's undefended until this point)

If I'm really feeling rushed for my second city site, I might put the settler second.

Worker,
Settler,
Worker,
Worker,
Settler,

Using chop-switch technique, a warrior or two will also be created in there.

Chop...Chop...Chop...Chop everything in sight.
Regardless of difficulty level.

I always use the warrior I start with for exploration so I build 2 more before building my first settler. Then I build a worker for each city. (unless I'm lucky enough to get a free warrior/settler/worker/city from a goodie hut.)

Scout or warrior
Scout or warrior
Worker
Settler

At lower difficulty levels, the fastest start by far is worker/worker/settler, chopping trees (one for worker, two for settler). At higher difficulty levels,
worker
warrior plus improve something
worker (chopped)
settler (chopped x 2)

If you are running a difficult slow game (emperor/marathon) it will take so long to research Bronzeworking that you might as well make a couple of warriors first.
