Settling distance change?

Was there a recent change to the distance or the way settling works or am i just having terrible luck with terrain and citystate placements? Early game, on a standard map, I have enough room to settle maybe one extra city or two. Pretty much the entire map doesn't seem to be able to be settled.

They haven’t changed anything lately.
When you say space, how far apart are these cities?
Also, Are you playing terra? Terra maps are extremely dense in the old world.

I don't think the distance has changed, but it does feel in the last few games as if the AI is settling more aggressively. I don't know whether that's real or imagined.

The AI has always settled aggressively. My favorite is when they settle eight near some of your troops, demand they move them, then denounce you. That is what got Phonecia slaughtered in my current game.

I just validated, it has not changed.
If you settle within 8 tiles or less of a civ city on the same landmass, you are at risk of being asked for a promise.You can settle 3 tiles away over water without risk, as long as the land is not connected.

I think the patch changed CS default locations, so it could be a case where they perhaps end up taking up slightly better spots than before. My last start had 2 city-states that basically perfectly sat in the middle of a 5 or 6 tile peninsula section, so they practically perfectly blocked off all settling in the area. One tile in any direction and you could have squeezed a tile along the coast. And it wasn't just that game that I've seen city-states place themselves like that.

I mean, that being said, I still had a good number of city locations around, so it's not like they squeezed me in, but they blocked off just about the maximum land between them as possible.

They removed a preference for natural wonders they seemed to have... whether they tweaked it more to be right up your nose I do not know but I was getting annoyed they were settling those fine wonders continously.

Ahhh okay. I wonder if that is just the case, they are just settling better areas. A lot of my games months ago I was easily able to settle close to 5 or more cities within my starting area, now it just seems much harder.i restarted one game about 10 times and each time I had crap areas to settle. I checked map size to be sure it wasn't on small or something too. I'll just say it's bad luck and them settling better areas.

Maps seem to come in bursts like that, sometimes you get a whole continent, sometimes you get a footstool and they seem to group.
