I can't see this posted anywhere, so hope I'm not duplicating.

When starting a new game, on Advanced Setup Options, you can set the number of civilisations in the game to more than the number that exist in the game (this is without Babylon) - basically there are 18 civilisations in the game but you can add AI opponents until the total number of civs is more than 18. If you do this then try and start the game, then it will crash.

The crash itself isn't really the problem, more that the game shouldn't allow more than 18 civilisations at startup (or more if you have Babylon or other mods.)

How many civs and what map size did you try?
The game is capable of running with 22 civs, that should work, but some computers are having problems with handling big maps with many civs, so this might be the problem here.

It was a huge map with 20 civs, it stopped completely as soon as I clicked Start Game.

On the list shown when selecting your own Civ there are only 18, that's why I assumed that more than 18 was causing the problem.

I've had no problems with any other setup thus far, my PC was top-of-the-range less than a year ago (I don't know the exact spec off-hand but it should cope with anything CivV can throw at it!)

I am having this same bug.

I tried to do a 22 civ Standard map, and at first it worked. I was able to play for about 80 turns. Then the game froze and did a CTD. After that I restarted, tried to load the autosave, and it crashed upon loading.

So I gave up on that game and started a new one. However, this time, whenever I try to load a map -- even on smaller sizes -- it freezes and CTDs during the initial loading phase, usually about halfway through the narration introducing the Civ.

I haven't once been able to play with 22 civs since then. :( So sad.

Have tried it again, it seems to work this time. I think I did everything the same. Strange.

Some thoughts:

- There's report of a memory leak if you load a game after already being in another save. (i.e. load a save, load another save, load yet another save)

- Did you change "fog of war" settings in the video options to low?

Or it could be something else entirely...
