SGOTM 01 - Fifth Element

American football? A man's game? Oh dear. For those who think grabbing a ball and violently crashing into other men repeatedly is the epitome of masculinity, there is indeed a sport available. Its called Rugby, and it doesn't involve body armour. ;)

Re: Great People.

Getting an Academy or two going would definitely be an excellent idea. For those who have experience of diplo victory, roughly how long does it take to get to Mass Media? Its one I generally ignore.

*chuckles* at least I got a rise out of somebody... :mischief: Absolutely agree about Rugby.

Academies are great. Love 'em. If we get GS that's what we should definitely spend them on.

It's not hard to get to MM. I pretty much always try to build then UN, so that I can control the votes. Otherwise, the AI wants votes for civics that I don't want, not to mention the fact that it sucks to lose to a diplo when you're going for something else. It's all about controlling the vote.

Perugia, Thanks for the screenies. After I've had my morning coffee, I may be able to respond coherently.

I ve finished my turn set
Unamed workers renamed as Rosicky(near Moscow), Klose( Elephantine).

I ve gone for Theatre in some cities since we need 6 of them for Globe Theatre.

Never mind about the HG - we can find other ways to boost the culture in Memphis to gather the silver.

Giza's border will expand soon. The nearest workboat should head over there to hook up the fish and the other workboat (or a new one if it still has exploration use) should hook up the clams.

Are we able to build missionaries yet? Thebes could do with a temple and 10% from a monastery there would also be good.

I wonder if we will find another civilization at the North end of India, I do hope so!

I’ve taken a look at the game and plan to play my turns in the morning. Here are some of my thoughts. Let me know if you have other ideas:

1. Cyrus will trade Monarchy for Drama, and I plan to do this unless others disagree. This will get us hereditary rule and by repositioning troops, will allow us enough happiness to remove unhappy citizens in all cities.

2. If for some reason 1 is a bad idea, I would rush Hanging Gardens in Thebes at cost of 2 population, +1 angry citizen for 15 turns. This will net out 1 unhappy citizen, as there are currently 2 unhappy citizens.

3. Currency is due in 2. Next up, COL

4. Apprentice is building a mine on desert hill N of Giza. Recommend moving him to plains hill 1 west to build mine and then cottage 1 w of Giza (or vice versa – cottage before mine?)

5. Moscow is building an Aqueduct, but has +5 health. Would we be better off putting our hammers in research instead?

@BrianS #366
Regarding your ideas:
1. Sounds like a good deal assuming he will not throw in Archery. With HR we won't need to worry so much about religion.
2. If we are planning on building the Globe Theatre at Thebes don't pop rush and don't bother with a temple there just use MPs. It might still be worth actively speading religion to our top science cities for the monasteries. You could see if MM will net HG sooner just in case the AI beats us to it then go back to commerce once its in.
3. Agree.
4. Mine before cottage so we can get out a granary soonest.
5. Agree that Aqueduct can be pushed down Moscow's build queue. Research would be fine if there's nothing more urgent.
6. Can we have a scientist or two please for the GPPs.

Turn Notes

Turn 1 (320 AD)Switch Giza from Theatre to Granary.
Order Apprentice from desert hills to plains hills NW of Giza
Trade Drama for Monarch with Cyrus (the tightwad won’t throw in Archery)
Adopt HR
Move Dani C2 (war chariot) into Thebes to quiet last unhappy citizen. One of the new happy Thebians is promoted to Scientist
Moscow puts hammers into Research
Switch Pi-Ramesses from Theatre to Granary

Turn 2 (335 AD)
Currency is discovered. COL is started. Research slider increased to 50%. Now at +1 GPT, with 30 in the bank.
Leonardo is ordered to Memphis to build mine.
Memphis has grown and is unhappy, needs another military, but none nearby. Order Djet to Memphis from S of Moscow.

Turn 3 (350 AD)
HG completed in Memphis, start Market
Moscow switches to Market

Turn 4 (365 AD)
Continue exploring India. Barbarian town in NW territory of Indian lands is under attack by Indian forces.

Turn 5 (380 AD)
Hindu monastery completed in Elephantine. Missionary started.
Continue exploring India

Turn 6 (395 AD)
Granary completed in Heliopolis, theatre started.

Turn 7 (410 AD)
Gandhi asks to trade Calendar +100 gold for Currency. Not so fast buddy.
Instead, we get the same deal from Cyrus.

Turn 8 (425)
Cyrus asks us to convert to Judasim or face the wages of sin. Forget it.
We have now closed the circle with our workboat and galley around India. No signs of any other continents. Are beelining out of Indian territory.
Theatre started in Memphis

Turn 9 (440)
Missionary completed in Elephantine and sent to Thebes. New missionary started in Elephantine.
Giza grows, and workboat started on fish.

Turn 10 (455 AD)
COL is discovered. Construction begun; considered CS and that might be a better choice. Not many beakers into it if the next player wants to switch.
Aaron ordered to sugar NE of Moscow. Plantation should be started ASAP to get another happy face.
Courthouse started in Memphis

Parting thoughts:
Some cities are starting to show unhappiness. That can be removed under HR by adding more military units.
Trading with Cyrus might be worth another look now that we have COL.

gskur - you are up!

Everyone - This is an ideal time to discuss Research path.

BrianS - Nice turnset. We now have GE GPPs in Memphis thanks to the HG and GS in Thebes. Good on you for turning down of the Gandhi Calendar offer and trading with poor old Cyrus instead. That 100 gold nicely expands our treasury.

Thoughts....

Do our units North of India have any further mission or can they head home so we can revoke our OB with India? If we want to bring them home, we can revoke the agreement once they are half-way across India so they get expelled to the India/Persia border for a freebie move.

Although we have HR we must remember that military have support costs so it may be a good idea for cities without Theatres to build those cheap little beauties (creative trait). Anyways we need 6 of them to build the Globe Theatre and this will free up military to roam to the largest cities.

I have lost sight of what is being built in Thebes, now that it has religion a monestary would be nice for the +10% science?

One thing I am wondering is does Memphis need the courthouse just yet - it can't have much maintenance as it is close to Thebes so courthouse can't benefit us that much. So might it be better to build a market first as with all the cottages 25% of Memphis gold production might well be greater than 50% of its maintenance?

So everyone can value the merit of courthouses can someone check the maintenance costs of Moscow, Alexandria and Elephantine which will benefit most due to distance from the capital.

I take it "HG" is Hanging Gardens. What's "GE", and what's "GS"? Also, what's "HR" that we have, a few paragraphs hence? If it is Horseback Riding--we DO NOT have it...

...Is there any particular reason why our state religion is Buddism and not Hiduism?

...Will play tomorrow morning. More questions to follow, esp. on building queues and research.

Lurkers translations...

GE, GS = great engineer, great scientist... two of the GP (great people) comming from the GPP.

HR= Heriditary rules (probably missspelled); the civic which allows you to use military units in cities to produce extra happyness.

A quick idea, then I'll expand more...

If we put our galley at the extreme opposite end of india, and then revoke, there's a slim possibility that we could get bounced to an open coast on the other continent? Just a thought. I'm not really sure if this would work.

OK, I'm back.

I think it might be time to start thinking about the can of whoopass we're going to open for Cyrus. It would be good if we can take him out before he gets caravels, so we don't get the "You declared war on our friend!" sickness. We're definitely going to need cats for that, so construction may well be the right path at this time. The major drawback I can see is losing the border cities with india to Ghandi's culture.

If we go in from the sea, and take one city at a time, we can limit the cost of having our troops in foreign territory. We couild also open borders with ghandi again and attack from both sides in a pincer move. Although this would require a lot more forces, it would probably end the war more quickly.

We're behind on tech, so it would be in our best interest to get Cyrus before he gets longbows. They are a bugger on city defense, and will require us to bring many, many cats to overcome. We'll still need lots of artillery anyway, but longbows are murder.

With regard to research, it seems that again we are faced with the "guns or butter" decisions.

Our state religion is buddhism because we got it first, if I recall. We don't want to go hinduism because Ghandi has the Kashi, and to spread it would give him both more money, and visibility into our cities. After we take off Cyrus, if he has a shrine, we should convert to that religion and spread it like wildfire.

I agree that Memphis should probably build the market first. Ditto on the theatre binge.

Great people: If we get GS, build academies in the highest science cities. If we get GE, save them for the UN/Eiffel Tower. GA, save for Cyrus' border cities.

If we can trade cyrus for Monotheism, we could get organized religion, which would make our buildings cheaper to build.

Actually, to be quite frank, I find it quite a bit over the top... With all the screaming, worrying, and partying, you would think something really important like the Stanley Cup finals was going on next door!

Spoiler :
Canadian born and raised, grew up as an Oilers fan in the Gretzky/Kurri/Messier/Fuhr/Coffey era!

Hear hear! How 'bout them Oilers!?

Somebody got a little out of touch! We're most likely going to be up against Gandhi at elections anyway, so keeping him happy isn't too necessary (anyway, to do that we'd have to help him out a lot and he'd probably win). We just have to try and get him under wraps, wipe out Persia so he can't, take down HC, and then either charm the rest of the world or get to a position where we can vote ourselves in. Easy. :(

@Merum
Gandhi has both Hinduism and Judaism. We did not discover Buddism. We have only one Buddist city. There is a Hindy missionary (did we build it?) in Thebes ready to convert the city. I am confused, as you might have guessed by now...

@gskur: Excellent point about the religions. I think we do have some confusion going on here. Gandhi did discover both Hinduism and Judasim and we probably don't want to be spreading either religion. We want to be spreading Buddhism, which is only in Memphis. Memphis now has a monastery, so we should consider switching that to a missionary and start spreading the religion. In my turn set, I was focused on Gandhi having discovered Judaism, and missed the whoe Hinduism thing. Bah!
