SGOTM 01 - Fifth Element

Regarding building temples/monasteries in the border cities (or any city, really): The Monasteries should come first (unless the city needs the happiness) so we can get the most benefit from the science boost for most turns possible.

I know I'm telling you all things you already know, but I just figured I'd hang it out there.

Hi all,

I decided to wait a day to get some more input back... it was rather short notice for feedback, and we had an invitation to enjoy a fine Victoria, BC evening in the late-evening sunshine that I couldn't resist :)

Back at it for tonight, though.

Here are the screenies from my turn.

w00t! screenies! Thanks, Perugia!

FDR is a known whacko... do you think we can get him to declare war on Huayna? This will do two things: Keep Huayna off our backs, and keep FDR from slipping us one of those sneak attacks I've been so often on the receiving end of. It will also slow his economy a bit, because he looks like he's going gangbusters...

Also, Ghandi is beginning to worry me... we have to take Cyrus down before he does, either by culture or arms. We might try bribing him into war With Huayna, too?

Yeh! FDR can be bribed to fight HC let's do it once we get a tech lead on him and lets get his map in the process.

Once we have Liberalism we can stir things up further by trading Astronomy around to get FDR and Gandhi into war with each other and/or HC (no point before as they can't ferry troops around).

I have updated my war plan at post #439.

Summary

1. Cyrus Iron is only 3 tiles from Indian border so let's attack overland.

2. Main force start at Tarsus and work down the coast with navy support.

3. Secondary force capture Sidon (on our continent) and Bactra (re-opens trade with Gandhi and a route to reinforce through the rear)

4. Tertiary force captures Libyan.

Forces 1 & 4 need to have the correct mix of troops for the mission before we declare. Forces 2 & 3 will get continual reinforcement as new units are fed to the front.

With regard to razing persian cities, we have to be careful, because when we raze, Ghandi's culture will expand and possibly prevent us from rebuilding.

I'd like to get the map from FDR ASAP, so we can see just how big Huayna's britches are. He may have gone through some wars already and end up being a paper tiger. The best we could hope for at this moment is that FDR and HC would be pretty evenly matched, so they just end up trading blows for a while, with not much progress on either side. Perhaps we could teach them trench warfare? :mischief:

@Perugia #438

Why do you want to switch to paganism? It has greater upkeep than pacifism, admittedly as our army grows this will reverse - but I feel we could stay there at the moment and use the +100%GPPs effect to rush another artist (see below). You are right that eventually we will have to go back to paganism but hopefully only short term.

edit We should by then have traded for Monotheism so we can use our spirtual technique to switch between Organised Religion (buildings/wonders) and Pacifism (GPPs).

Yes, my original thought was to save money, although I hadn't done the math to realize it wasn't that significant. I agree with the thought above re: Monotheism.

Hi guys,

I've had a (hopefully) minor personal emergency arise where I'll need to sit out for perhaps a couple of days.

Anyone had the joy of having their 5 year old break an arm?? This is our second one... both on monkey bars :(

I'll let you know when I can get back in the saddle.

Sorry for the delay... family life calls ;)

Assuming you're asking for a skip, I'll help Perugia out in posting the new roster:

Doom Train (Up)
gskur (On Deck)
Dolphan
Merum
Groin_Apologist
Perugia (resting)
Goodenuf (Skip until further notice)
BrianS(Skip until July 1)

Perugia, hope you don't mind. I've edited the list to reflect the earliest I think I may be able to play. After nearly a month away, I'm really looking forward to being able to play again.

Doom Train, you are up. It seems like we have a coherent plan based on the last couple of days' discussion.

Goodenuf, hope your kid is OK.

BrianS - I was quite surprised myself with the saving when switching from Paganism to Pacifism as its not a civic I use often.

Merum - good point about razing Persian cities. We don't want to do anything that will help Gandhi. Suggest we bring one more artist with us for the Marble city.
Spoiler I'm not fond of razing :
Personnally I'm not fond of razing, I think it's a big waste of population and buildings. If I'm on a mission to eliminate a civ so their culture is being pushed back I'll only ever raze a city that I want to abandon entirely (such as in the tundra) or relocate to a much better position. I'll never raze a large city or one with non-religious buildings in it.
With HR, our healing troops or mp's can make unhappy Persian citizens happy despite the fact we are raping their motherland and/or we can get out the whip using a bit of spiritual slavery.

Goodenuf. Children are the most important thing to us. It really hurts when they are suffering. Take good care of your kid.

Thanks Merum for helping out with the roster. Help is always welcome. However, as you were skipped I would normally move you up the order. Why don't you edit the roster as to where you see yourself fitting in. Agree with edit to post #449 1 place up

Opened the save.

I ll play tommorow. Tonight i ll read posts after Perugia s turn set and make a plan.

I'm bummed, but I need to request a skip for my turn after Doom_Train. I'm traveling Sunday thru Friday.

I'm not big on razing either. I almost never do it, unless the city is just untenable, or I have absolutely no plan to occupy the territory. I'd much rather have the instant productivity the city gives when it comes out of disorder. It's also why I'm mostly against pillaging in territory I intend to occupy.

Looking through the last set of screenshots again I see that FDR apparently has no state religion?? I'm surprised at this. Anybody else? It doesn't seem likely that he has liberalism and therefore free religion...

If there's any way we can get him converted to Buddhism that would be pretty awesome for us. A turn toward a different religion for him would have negative relations impact on us, obviously.

Can the next player check and see if he has adopted one yet, what civics he has cooking, and what he thinks about HC? Thanks!

Looks like i will prepare first second and third groups for war. I am confused about our main force. They will start at Indian territory 3 turns away from Cyrus's iron right? and move Tarsus from there?

Any suggestions for research?

I will start my turnset after Portugal - Holland match...

OK some confusion here. Only the city attack groups were numbered so the force going for the iron did not have a number. Sorry for the confusion.

Main force (First force)

As named, this is our major force and starts in ships off the coast of Tarsus. Part of it will land south of the city to cut off reserves the rest will come from the north side. The remainder will be ferried from our continent as the galleys unload. This mega battle group then marches down the coast and rinses & repeats. Part of the force splits off to take out Bactra.

Second force

Starts off in our territory and marches overlan to take out Sidon on our continent (needs a worker to complete the road network). This force then crosses over using our galleys and links up with the main force moving south from Tarsus. If Persian culture from Bactra is cutting our trade with Gandhi along the coast to the West of Tarsus then this force heads West to take out Bactra.

Third force

Whatever is needed to secure Byblos and attack Libyan (if we want to attack it) and not wait for a flip.

Fourth (iron force)

This force has non-city attack promotions (guerilla will be good with all the hils near the iron) This force is a marauding army. It is to harass the Persion iron mine and nearby mines to wreck his production. This will be a good place to deploy the majority of crossbows and longbows we have.

I hope that makes it clearer what the plan is - unless you or anyone else has other ideas!

We are researching towards Liberalism in an attempt to beat the AI to it and snag a free tech.

I ve played 13 turns. It was gonna 15 but important event has been occured. Uploaded the save gskur is next...

Bad news Byblos revolted and joined to India in my 13th turn. We should re-discuss the actions of third force.

I ve marked a gather point for first and second force and 2 docks for galleys.Second force will start and first force will get on galleys at that point . I think we should decide about the size and type of units we ll use in these forces for next player to complete our war plan.

Currently we have:
3 Axeman
10 Maceman
1 Sword
9 Catapult
5 Galley
2 Caravels
