SGOTM 01 - Fifth Element

Job well done, Doom Train!

My suggestions for what to do next:
We need to switch production in both T and M to swordsman. I’d build 2 in T and 1 in M. We can gain a turn in M if need be by working the forest for a couple of turns.

Unfortunately, the barb in the North will cost us a few coins because we will have to move both units out of the city to meet him if it comes for M, which he might not do—with luck. If he does, I would upgrade Shu to axeman (we have the money for this) and promote him to C1 and have him and Fatos wait for the barb axe on the mine 1N of M and, not letting the barb attack, I would have Shu attack first. If he dies, Fatos could finish the job (hopefully). If we have no military in M we will have 5 unhappy faces there (I hope it’s not 6). I would stop working the flood plain but maintain the hammers for those few turns to have sword built on schedule, then drop the horses and work the flood—until we are done with Moscow and can quickly bring a chariot to M. We can also start on of the warriors N of Moscow to move to M right away, I guess, and if Shu lives—move him to the front line. If we lose Shu, I would move a worker North to clear the fog-of-war and leave the city empty for the time being.

I would move Djer (3N1W of Moscow) toward Memphis right away--he might make it there in time to save the city if we get extremely unlucky North of Memphis. Djer is under "move" orders so do not forget to redirect him befor finishing his turn or use almost healthy Iry-Hor (3N of Moscow) instead.

We attack Moscow after 18 turns with all the chariots we have and 3 swords, or after 15 (or 14) turns with 2 swords.

@Gskur #261

Why not sit Shu on the mine after the upgrad and let the barb attack him? That way he'll get the defensive bonus and we only have to move Fatos out of the city if he loses.

@Dolphan #262
An axe has 50% attack bonus vs. another axe, but the hill is only 25% defence bonus (both axes will be on the hill). Hence, it is 25% bonus for attacing vs. defending in this situation. We have another 10% for Combat I, one way or another, of course.

@Gskur #264

The melee bonus is not just on attack. Look at your odds display when attacking an axeman with a melee unit - unpromoted swordsmen usually lose attacking axemen for this reason.

A side note; I haven't noticed this until the last screenshot. Huyan Capac was the one who founded confucianism, and he didn't use the oracle to get there. Either he's quite a ways ahead of us in research, or he hasn't researched any 'military' type of techs. Also, if he has Code of Laws, then he also has Alphabet, so he's likely traded for his missing links. It could be an interesting challenge later in the game.

We need to finish Russia off and get this island fully populated so we can get our economic and industrial engines going on all cylinders; I fear we have much catching up to do.

I would also venture to guess that if we haven't seen anyone else yet by now, that galley travel is not possible between continents, so we need to wait for Astronomy before even meeting up with anyone else. They will likely meet us before we meet them.

Galley travel is definitely possible to the spit of land I saw when first exploring with Tefnut, which is where the "Coast Here" sign points. Whether that's an island, or part of another continent is debatable, but there's definitely reachable land there.

I wonder if we haven't become too "raze-happy" and destroyed cities when we could have been building them up... a sub-optimal city already improved is better than a perfect city built 50 turns later. The differences we're talking about in terms of gold will be negligible compared to what we've lost in time.

Huayna, at the very least, is so far ahead of us in tech we better hope we don't meet him for another couple of centuries, but I suspect we'll be seeing his caravels off our shores soon enough.

Questions for the team:

Have we been (are we being) overly cautious?
Have we destroyed what we should have kept? How do we plan to make up for the lost time?
What will we do after the siege of Moscow ends? What is our build plan?

Urgent needs (IMO)

Sailing (exploration and colonization)
Alphabet (Tech trade)
Code of Laws (courthouses)
Currency (markets and gold trade)
Construction (cats!)
Religion (Temples/Monasteries)

Decisions that need to be made before Moscow falls:

What type of state are we going to be? If we are locked at War with Huayna, we need to have a capable military, because that guy is a George Bush class nutjob. Does that mean we are going to become a militaristic society?

Part of me says we need to find Huayna ASAP and try to dispatch him so that we can be finished with the locked war. The other side of me is afraid of what we'll find, and of him finding us. Either way, when he does appear, we better be able to kick his teeth in.

I fear we've gotten tunnel vision on this war and lost sight of the big picture a bit.

Dolphan, I suggest we move Shu to a place where he can watch that northernost tile and keep the barbs away from our northern borders.

I believe the next citizen in Thebes will be unhappy. Watch the growth there.

Short term goal: Get some gems hooked up for happiness.

Putting the turn order on the current page. Players please append an updated turn order to the end of your turnset when you post.

My 10 turn are done and save game is uploaded.

Turn 1 (775 BC): Switch to sword production in Thebes & Memphis. Work mine Thebes to increase production speed of swords. Allows sword to be built in 4 turns instead of 5. This will save us 2 turns as 2 swords will be built in Thebes. Put workers to work on tiles around Memphis and Thebes. Promote Shu to C1 and upgrade to axe. Bring Djer N as extra defense.

Turn 2 (760 BC): Move Shu 1N of Memphis to mine to await barb axe. Djer continues N and finds barb axe roaming W of Thebes borders.

Turn 3 (745 BC): IBT barb axe attacks Djer. Djer prevails and is promoted to C2. Serket and Djet explore southern tip of island and find nothing of interest.

Turn 4 (730 BC): IBT Moscow archer attacker Narmer. Narmer prevails, is promoted to C2 and swaps position with Horus Dject to take him out of immediate danger while he heals. Start moving healthy chariots who are not already covering Moscow workable tiles into tiles immediately next to Moscow so no chariot is defending Moscow adjacent tile alone.

Turn 5 (715 BC): First sword is built in Thebes and named Hemen. Hemen is promoted to CR1 and moves towards Moscow. Second sword started in Thebes.

Turn 6 (700 BC): Hemen meets barb acher on road to Moscow. Hemen prevails and is promoted to CR2.

Turn 7 (685 BC): Petbe (sword) is born in Memphis. Promoted to CR1 and sent on road to Moscow. An axe is started in Memphis and remaining chariots are sent on road to Moscow. Shu is moved back into Memphis to avoid unhappiness.

Turn 8 (670 BC): Nothing happens.

Turn 9 (655 BC): Reshef (sword) is born in Thebes. Promoted to CR1 and sent south. Deficit spending has brought us to financial ruin, and tiles are managed to emphasize commerce in both Memphis and Thebes. Avoid growth is turned on in Memphis, otherwise a new unhappy citizen will be added in 1 turn.

Turn 10 (640 BC): IBT Merneith is attacked by Russian archer and survives. Moscow still has 6 archers - ouch. After Turn 10, Hsekiu is attacked by Russian archer and prevails. Next player - note that Hsekiu needs to heal.

State of Egypt: 10% research, 4 gold in treasury, +1 GBT. Thebes can't grow without unhappiness. Happiness is going to be a big problem for us. The good news is that Moscow is about to fall.

Yes, I got confused about it. There indeed no need to move Fatos out of the city: if we let the barb attack we are better off by 25%. Thank you for the correction!

@BrianS #268
1. I am wondering why we bilt another axeman in Memphis and why we are building another one in Thebes.
2. Why do we need to avoid growth in Memphis? The new unhappy citizen will not work but will consume the 2 extra food we have--and we are at balance. Is there any consequence to having unhappy sitizens other then "they do not work but eat" problem?
These were smart questions, I hope. Now a couple of stupid ones:
1. What is IBT? 2. What is GBT?
---------------------

Yes, there is a costal tile SW of clams: If you Shift-Left/Right you can glimpce a forest there!
-----------------------

Moscow falls in 7 turns, right?

Lurker input....

IBT = In Between Turns (i.e. during the AI moves).

GBT.... I Assume that this was a typo, and meant GPT, or Gold Per Turn, which is what would make sence in that sentence.

@gskur #269
1. I am wondering why we bilt another axeman in Memphis and why we are building another one in Thebes.

I started axeman for defense of these cities. I was concerned with archer/axe barbarians around and all our defenses in Russia we might get an unwelcome surprise. Maybe overkill.

I'm unclear on all the effects of unhappy citizens and have always tried to avoid them if at all possible.

Got the save. Will be playing the turns on thursday in a lump, so if people could give suggestions by then, for production in particular. I'll take Moscow at the discussed odds.

Had a look at the graph today; were in last place for our time in the game :(

We need to take out the russians very soon, and get the cities and growth going strong, or we're gonna be in trouble.

@Goodenuf #274

Take a look at the power graph if you want cheering up. We'll catch up.

I'm going to have to ask to be skipped I'm afraid. I'm experiencing near-instant crashes every time I load the save.

Damn. I was really looking forward to taking Moscow.

Spoiler Turns 1-6 from 625 BC to 550 BC :
1) 625 BC
..There is a barb axe SE of silver. Moving the newly built axe (with C1 upgrade) from Mem to the hill 1N to wait for the enemy: he has 4/5XP so, if survives, he will get a promo. Shu (2/5XP) remains in the city.
..I do not know what we are going to do with the axe being built in The. For now, I moved it down the queue—let’s work on granary, due in 8 turns. Switched the citizen from working stone to working a flood: we are not in a hurry to be building anything at the moment, but need money. Population grows in 3—will switch Avoid Growth ON.
..Research is as 10% and Writing is 77 turns away (bad-bad-bad), but do not despair: in 8 turns we will have much smaller army to support, by attrition and forced “retirement.” Meantime, we’ll build a couple of cottages.
..Switch Hel’s citizen to work rice for faster growth (The has no need for this rice)—it makes +4 food and growth in 2 to size 2. Barracks are in the build queue, long time to completion.
..In 7 turns, this incl., the last sword arrives and we attack. Move a couple of chariots out for healing.

2) 610 BC
..Moved Geb W of Moscow—a bait.
Aaron is building a cottage 1N1E of The. Just realized that we do not need to work the mine 1N of Mem—switched this citizen now (should have done it the previous turn!) to the flood 1S1E that will have cottage completed by Leonardo in 6. Switch research to 20% and holding. Swords are moving…

3) 595 BC
..Russians took the bait—by-by Geb. Dani C1 (1N of M) at 5.5 to 2.8 odds takes out the archer and comes back to the hill with 4.3/5.0 and due for promo next turn. Tefnut is next to be a bait. Moscow has 4 archers, 3 with Garrison I and one with C1. Hemen the Sword is in place.
..The barb in the north still dances around the silver!?
..A couple of cottages became hamlets. Research is at 30% with 6 (-1/Turn) gold.

4) 580 BC
..Dani C1 is C2 now, healing.
..Russians are not interested in Tefnut—she must be ugly or something… I’ll let her continue to pose there.
..The second sword will be in place next turn. I will consolidate all the troops to coincide with this. If Cathy whips the 5th archer I will wait for the last sword, otherwise I attack then.
..The barb in the north still dances.

5) 565 BC
..All of the troops are in place except for the last sword. Still 4 archers in M.
..Avoid Growth in The and Mem keeps food at max without letting cities grow, wasting food! I hate it!!! Since we do not need now those bloody Granaries anyways, I inserted Settlers in The and Mem at the top of the queues—4 turns late—should have done this on turn 1!
..Tefnut remains alone by M’s walls… Who knows?..
..The barb in the north still dances.

6) 550 BC
..Still 4 archers in M—attack! Both swords are dead, leaving archers at 0.3 and 1.0. I think we have enough troops, so I will attack with the younger chariots, leaving better chances for the most promoted to get some XPs finishing the job. This is because I will have to trim the military next turn anyways.
..The C1 chariots have 5.5 to 8.55 chances. Dan C1 withdraws at 0.2, ready for promo and leaves an archer at 0.6: wow!
..Kai C1 withdraws at 0.2, ready for promo and leaves an archer at 3.0: wow again, the other way!
..Fatos C1 is dead. Archer is at 0.1.
..The experienced Ben-Hur, Ka, Djet, Serket… and we are in. Inherited from Cathy 2 workers.
..We have 122 gold and holding at 30% research. Moved all but 5 units into Moscow. These 5 are “away” units, still outside of our territory. Now we are at 122 (+5/Turn).
..Let retire some units.
Spoiler We have now 21 military and 5 workers :
Fifthe_Element_Units_550BC.JPG
..Keep the workers. Military: Tefnut, Dan, Kai. Total unit cost is 8 gold, support is at 0. I’ll keep both axes and the sword. Trim all chariots with 5 XPs. We have 8 chariots left. Now we are at 122 (+12/Turn). Let’s wait till Moscow come on-line (will be in revolt for 4 turns, incl. this one)—this might change the unit support basis.
..Moving the sward towards Moscow: closest domestic territory. Order 2 former Russian workers to build road north to connect with existing one.
..Change research to 100% with 122 (-11/Turn).
..Writing is due in 3 turns now.
..The barb in the north still dances.
Spoiler Turns 7 -10 from 535 BC to 475 BC :

7) 535 BC
..The sword is in Moscow. Moved Serket north to cover the workers finishing the road. It took 1 worker to finish construction—apparently it was worked on before, by Cathy. I move the second one to start building a road to Gems NW of Mos.
..Oops! I see I forgot to save the previous turn, in all the excitement of taking Moscow…
..The barb in the north still dances.

8) 520 BC
..Mem’s borders expanded.
..1S1E of Mem and 2S1E of the have cottages now and bring 2 gold each. Moved 2 chariots south to break up the fog, and 2 went northward.
..Sent Leonardo to start a mine NE of Mem. Apprentice to help Aaron with the cottage NW of The.
..The barb in the north still dances.

9) 505 BC
..We have Writing now. Set to learn Fishing.
..The barb in the north retreated north onto the Silver.

10) 490 BC
..Two chariots continue NE towards Mem and now are in home territory.
..Djet kills a barb warrior in the south and is ready for promotion. Let’s save it.
..Started building library in Mos.

11) 475 BC
..The barb in the north is moving at us.
..Hsekiu is in The now. Arthur retires. Dani joined the axeman 1N of Mem.
..Leonardo is moved out of the way to the 1S of Mem and ordered to finish the road there (it was started on a dozen of turns back). Move him to finish the mine after we are done with the dancing barb axeman.
..Also, after we are done with the dancing barb axeman, move an axe and a chariot into Hel: there is still much darkness north of Mos; who knows what is lurking there...
..Apprentice and Aaron are building a cottage 2N of Hel.
..The road to the gems 1N2W of Mos is completed.
..Fishing is due next turn.
..Gold is at 63 (-13/Turn)
..This turn is not finished!
