SGOTM 01 - Fifth Element

Also no military struggle bonus with FDR! :goodjob:
Oh yes! I forgot to write that but it was considered as Gandhi was up to pleased with FDR (estimated +2 bonus rising to +4 eventually). I'll check if it's dropped back to cautious.

Update

The bad news is I'm taking things real easy.

The good news is we went ahead and landed 6 units next to Vilcamamba and then saw off HCs own invasion. In 1740 we left our fishing boats unprotected to land a further 6 units, HC split his fleet and pillaged away. We lost an ironclad to a frigate at 74% but sank the pillagers anyhow.

In 1742 we captured Vilcabamba and scuttled the rest of HCs frigates and galleons from the last screenies for the loss of just one rifle and advanced to the horses. With this bridgehead we should make rapid inroads into Incaland and will lay a railroad right behind the front line.

BTW the UN unanimously adopted Global Civic Emancipation to stop HC pop rushing.

Turn 1 -1736AD continued

I just spotted a real benefit from forcing FDR to drop Free religion in favour of Organised Religion - we are now up to +13 diplo points due to “+1 we care for our brothers & sisters of the faith”. We will of course lose this if he goes back or changes religion.

We sell Mass Media and Military Tradition to FDR for Railroad and WM. FDR and Gandhi have combustion.

We now have the ability to hold any tile we like in Incaland with a few machine gunners to defend our stack. I can send out siege stacks of machine guns/cannon/catapults to bombard city defenses and follow up with stacks of Riflemen and Grenadier assault units.

I decide to ignore the Incan navy and establish 6 units in a bridgehead outside Vilcabamba. We upgrade 2 maces to CA2 grenadiers and a catapult to cannon at Giza the muster station. BTW Giza is now our happiness rate determining factor.

Turn 2 – 1738AD

HC’s invasion force successfully amphibiously assaults our guerrilla 2 rifleman on the hill 1 NE of Memphis but loses 2 knights and a catapult in the process. One catapult withdrew and the remaining 2 catapults that made it ashore were easily dealt with without further loss.

HC sends one frigate and a galleon towards Giza but our fleet again ignores his fleet and returns to Giza to load up 6 more units. In expectation of the loss of some fishing boats we start a workboat at Heliopolis and, in anticipation of exacting revenge on the frigate, rush our first ironclad in Giza.

We start thinking about a great railroad project that will speed our new troops to the front and ideally will pass through forests and resource mines for bonus hammers. We can now trade for combustion but decide to hang on to Mass Media for something more worthwhile.

Turn 3 – 1740AD

HC pillages 2 fishing boats. Our ironclad is unluckily defeated when attacking HCs frigate at 74% but our frigates sink his damaged frigate and galleon. After bombarding Vilcabamba to zero, the US fleet sails away without entering the fight.

Turn 4 – 1742AD

UN Resolution #743 - Global Civic – Emancipation Suceeds!
Spoiler :
FE 208
Gandhi 165
FDR 127
HC 67
Saladin 84
651/651
Now updating our progress on the win we have FE+FDR+HC=402/403 to win so we either defeat all of HC and grow ourselves slightly faster than Gandhi or get Sally to vote for us.

Susa synagogue (rushed) > culture

Attack and capture Vilcamamba with a suicide pinch promoted rifleman that loses to a rifleman but we mop up 2 longbowmen and a catapult to advance on the city and 140 gold which we will probably use to rush a settler in Moscow. We sink the rest of HCs main naval force in port. Vilcabamba has 6 turns of unrest to go in which time I need to send over a workboat to prevent too much starvation.

With this bridgehead we should make rapid inroads into Incaland and will lay a railroad right behind the front line. Wasting not time I advance our unused units onto the Incan horses.

Jalal al- Din Rumi (Great Artist) born in Moscow and sent to Incaland. Tiwanaku targeted for a probable culture bomb.

Roosevelt did convert to Islam so now we’d be better off with him in Free Religion doh! I’ll have to make him change back by adopting it ourselves! We can hold another revolution next turn.

Good start to the turnset... don't forget to put some settlers on the burner so that we can take empty spaces, like the aforementioned island that Ghandi razed... we want to beat him to it, and the quicker we get cities settled, the more they'll grow.

Also, be mindful that you traded Mass Media to FDR, so watch he doesn't sneak in and sell it to Ghandi ahead of us, such that we won't even get combustion for it.

How are our Persian holdings faring? Are they standing up to the cultural onslaught? Broadcast towers will give those cities a 50% culture boost, and they're far cheaper than cathedrals.

Can we get a screenie of the food graph?

OK I will queue up some settlers in our large cities and where possible donate shared tiles to cities building military to keep the population growing.

I feel I can stop gold rushing for a few turns soon so I want to try and set science right up to learn Biology. +1 food from farms will really help our cities grow, new and old alike.

Thanks for the reminder about Mass Media I forgot that I'm gambling with this but still think the risk it is worth it as we are doing just fine with ironclads, frigates & galleons and we really would not gain much from destroyers and transports. I'd rather hope FDR researches Communism so Gandhi will trade us that instead.

Persia is doing just fine. We still have 0% chance of a revolt with 6 units in Gordium and 5 in Susa. I went for cathedrals, where available, because with the resource discount they actually work out ever so slightly cheaper than broadcast towers (225 vs 262 AFAIR). I have a spare knight in the area in case things get worse and as further insurance Gordium is investing a few hammers into a broadcast tower which I will only rush if necessary or we have surplus cash. I'll probably set it back to culture quite soon.

I'll include the food screenie in the next post and include the demographics one as that provides reference data. I'll also upload the save for :scan: .

Getting Biology is a great idea.

Oh yes! I forgot we are spiritual. Good show then! :goodjob:

We have 8 days to finish. Could everybody who plans to be able to play in that time frame check in so that we can plan for optimal use of available time? We don't have a lot of time for traditional 24/48 SG play now, but I think the goals are pretty straightforward at this point: Grow and take all HC's cities, then win the vote.

@Merum #687: I'm up next and will be able to play promptly.

I've been following the recent postings but haven't responded because it all sounds good. One concern I have is keeping FDR's vote. I'm worried that his relationship with Gandhi is improving. Is there anything else we can do to sour their relationship? I don't see much else we can do to improve our relationship with FDR.

Turn 4 – 1742AD continued

We lost the chance to trade Mass Media, sorry folks . Drop culture to 10% and increase science to 60% for Biology in 8.

MM Thebes to stagnancy and start settler as planned. Susa also starts settler as culture seems OK for now and it is stagnant. Switch Pasardadae production to temple as we have some WW there. Rush a lighthhouse in Armana and an aqueduct in Giza to improve growth.

Turn 5 – 1744AD

Move cannon into position outside Huamanga and advance on Tiwanaku. Switch to Theocracy and adjust cities to pop queued units.

Turn 6 – 1746AD

Bombard Huamanga to 0%. Move cannon into position outside Tiwanaku.

Gandhi completes Broadway but who cares!

Cancel our gems gift to Saladin – we need it to overcome war weariness. Will need to recover our spice from Gandhi soon.

Turn 7 – 1748AD

The assault on Huamanga is a success at 32% rifle vs rifle! 102 gold captured thank you after our drill 2 cannon defeats HCs takng no damage.

Change plan and Jalal al-Din Rumi creates a great work in Vilcabamba right now to allow our galleys, workboats and ironclads access across the strait.

Land an assault force at Tiwanaku.

The UN votes and we have 220 votes out of 661 needing 409 for victory.

Turn 8 - 1750AD

We fall short of victory by 58 votes as once again only FDR supports us.
Fifth Element 222
FDR 129

Gandhi 166
HC 58 (abstain)
Saladin 85 abstain

Saladins 85 votes are a waste of space I think we should cut our losses and stop trading him health and happiness. It does not look like he will ever vote for us now. Every abstained vote increases our target figure.

FDR is far enough behind Gandhi that we can think of gifting him cities if our maintenance gets too big.

Two HC grenadiers appear and for a moment I think they are infantry!!!!??? Now we do not have enough strength at Tiwanaku to take and hold so I wait for next galleon load of units to arrive.

Sell Democracy to Saladin for 20g and WM – we are desparate for gold to hurry a lighthouse in starving Vilcabamba. Found El-Amarna SW of Moscow.

Turn 9 - 1752AD

Commit a suicide cannon at Tiwanaku and then use a grenadier to finish off HCs CD2 Rifle. Rifle vs rifle also a success. Mop up a longbow & catapult with unpromoted rifles to capture city & 173 gold.

Use our mounted troops to eliminate one of HCs grenadiers that showed up. The other in in the fog right now.

Sorry for the delay but I am checking absolutely everything to try and MM a turn off biology. We are 3 turns from biology right now. I am aware of the deadline and I have now upload the save so you can review progress but will play again tonight and then hand over to BrianS.

For now we are 1 turn from enabling another revolution if we need it but civics seem just fine at the moment as long as we don't get a -ve modifier with FDR for running a different religion.

We will soon be able to cancel the deals I made with Gandhi, Saladin did not come a calling & we need our spice back!

Perugia, how are relations between FDR and Gandhi? At this point, FDR appears key to our victory.

FDR remains pleased with Gandhi and is still friendly to us at +11 including a -1 modifier for bein of a different religion. I hope to remove this soon by civics change.

Gandhi is down to +1 on mutual military struggle with us so hopefully it's similar with FDR.

Edit

1756AD Roosevelt unilaterally adopted both Free Religion & Universal suffrage so we are up to +13 with him.

Turn 9 - 1752AD continued

Cancel some deals with Saladin, which help his health and happiness but not ours and thus have potential to increase the UN victory target.

MM for biology in 2 by building research at our academy cities.

Gordium now has 0.26% chance of revolt – start culture building and find extra garrison from Bactra which is left undefended.

Turn 10 - 1754AD

Buddhism spreads to El Amarna. Gandhi completed Hollywood.

Cancel deals with Gandhi except sugar for wheat.

Cancel some more deals where we are trading our food resources to Saladin and sell stone for 8gpt instead. I don’t think we will be needing stone any more.

Turn 11 – 1756AD

We learn BIOLOGY can at last build farms without irrigation and more importantly all now get farms +1 food. Turn off science for good.

Roosevelt unilaterally adopted both Free Religion & Universal suffrage so we are up to +13 with him.

FDR now has Infantry – we ask him to attack HCs one hex island Arequipa

Turn 12 – 1758AD

We are re-elected secretary general and Saladin votes for us!

Turn 13 - 1760AD

HC shows up with a frigate off Arequipa which this time we manage to sink with an ironclad.

Capture Vilcas and 109gold for loss of a grenadier.

Found Hieraconpolis SW of Moscow.

Sell Biology to FDR for 160g, hopefully this will increase his growth rate and give us a few more votes.

Turn 14 – 1762AD

Found Abydos on Indian border
Found Asyut near Memphis

Turn 15 – 1762AD

Running Theocracy is now giving us +2 diplo points with Saladin but I don’t think he will vote for us.

Turn 16 – 1764AD

We fail to win a UN victory by only polling 388 votes against a target of 424. That is only 36 votes short!

It is getting late and I’ve just about burned myself out so I conclude my turnset at this point with most of the turn to play. Here is the turn log from the upload.

Conclusion

BrianS is up and should be able to achieve victory hopefully in the next 6 turns.

The Home Front

Brian, we now have biology which is giving a nice growth boost. I have been MM the cities and moving ownership of shared tiles around to maximise growth in those cities that are growing the fastest. You should do the same. I suggest that any city that can grow in the next 6 turns should be on max growth.

Longer growth time cities than that can be used to build setters or even workers or have their spare food given to another city that can grow in <6 turns.

To assist in this task all our workers, bar one, are building farms over workshops and underdeveloped cottages. Some of our stagnant or slow growing cities are building settlers but to be honest most cities (at least up to until quite recently) have been growing themselves rather than popping setters. Now we have quite a lot of cities around size 20 and we don’t care about maintenance, I have been building settlers.

I have been 2-turn rushing lighthouses in coastal cities that can benefit and building workboats. Look out for opportunities for this and to 2-turn rush granaries, grocers and aqueducts as well where you feel they will help growth.

There are at least 5 open settling sites on our continent and in Persia as follows:
Mid-way between Moscow, Alexandria & Sidon (very tight squeeze).
Between Elephantine and Heliopolis.
North of Moscow but still 3 tiles from the site above on the other side of the bay.
West of Tarsus.
In the tundra west of Persepolis.

When founding new cities be careful as they steal tiles from the nearby cities and as it takes ages to grow the new city to pop 2 we are usually better off moving those tiles back to the existing city that already has a half-full or better granary even if the new city has to run a citizen specialist (the game ends in 6 turns doesn’t it?).

I just rushed a workboat on the north coast of our continent so we can build fishing boats for Asyut.

The culture slider is at 40% in order to work the maximum amount of food tiles. Keep an eye on changing this up or down. Food is the key for now so don’t worry about unhappy citizens that cannot provide any food if they were made happy. I think it is better to have the extra gold to spend in another city.

We are importing corn and wheat from the AI to assist in managing health.

Incaland

AFAIR there is a workboat around which can be used to work sea resource on our new Incan cities. I have already used 2 at Vilcabamba. A lone worker is extending the railhead eastwards.

There are many sites where we could found new cities in Incaland but only one is open at the moment on the peninsula facing towards America. We should send a settler and a Machine Gun to found there in 5 turns. The other 4 or so potential sites are covered by HC culture at the moment.

We have one siege in progress at the moment (I can’t remember the name of the city). HC has quite a potent defense at the moment (2 rifles with C1 and CD2 plus some small stuff) and we have a MG and some obsolete units in the stack which either can’t attack or are only along to bombard. I think it's not clear if we can take the city with the force we have at them moment, reinforcements might be needed before we go in. On the other hand, you might be able to take the risk and expend our assets there knowing we can move the MG in to hold the place. These units have not moved this turn so its your call.

We have some units in Vilcas that are now healed and more on the way on boats from Eqypt. Some of these are obsolete but we now have the cash to upgrade many of them just before they leave our borders.

UN

A thought. If you think you have not gained enough new population to win the next vote and HC is running vassalage it might be worth going for Universal Civic Free Speech.

We need to find 36+ votes from somewhere.

BrianS - The very best of luck to you.

One more thing for the veteran Civvers amongst you....

Dunno if the team played CivIII before CivIV. But as we are desparately rushing food it's worth noting the difference in the way granaries work from previous versions of Civ.

CivIII - When the city grows half the food in the full food box bar was stored in the granary and returned to the food bar. The food in the granary was indicated on the food box bar by a green dividing line.

CivIV - Each turn half the food added to the food bar is added to the granary (this is hidden food) up to a maximum of half the food in the food bar. When the city grows the food stored in the granary is returned to the food bar.

This means that in CivIV once the granary is built it must be primed with food whereas in CivIII the granary starts full of food. This makes very little difference in an established city but makes a huge difference in cities building a granary.

In CivIII it was optimum to build the granary one turn before the city grew and you got its full effect immediately. If you build the granary one turn later it did nothing until the city grew a second time.

In CivIV they removed this MM and it is now optimum to build the granary as soon as possible as it effectively doubles your food surplus as soon as it is built (like all granaries you only get credited with this bonus food once the city actually grows and it has no effect when stagnant or in starvation).

BrianS probably knew this but not all of you might have.

A warning

I have just done some calculations that are alarming me: just to stand still for every 3 pop that Gandhi, HC and Saladin grow we or FDR need to grow by 6 pop or capture 2 pop from HC.

That confirms the policy of buying health resources from the AI and selling surplus health and happiness to FDR. We should minimise the sale of health and happiness resources to India and Arabia just to get wheat and corn. I think getting Gandhis wheat for our sugar is OK as with the Hit Musicals etc Gandhi probably does not get much extra benefit from it.

Now, and this is the really interesting bit, if we were to rely only on our own and FDRs growth to close the gap we would need a further 108 more population points which is going to be very hard to muster.

(388+108)/(636+108)=2/3

On the other hand if we steal from HC we only need 36 pop points to close the gap

(388+36)/636=2/3

So every pop stolen from HC is worth 3x one grown at home!!!!!!

Now in reality the real outcome will be somewhere in between. Assuming forward growth of 30 population for us & FDR we could accomodate opponents growth by 15 population and we would need to capture 36 population from HC.

If we can triple opponents growth and add 45 pop cos Gandhi and co have loads of cottages in place of our farms then we only need capture 31 pop from HC. Not much difference.

I'm not suggesting we curtail the growth strategy but clearly the priority for rushing & building, certainly in Egypt and Incaland should be on the military side rather than settler/growth. Hmmm. I'm beginning to think that maybe Biology was a mistake and Assembly Line would have been better.

If everything else fails with regard to getting votes, We could probably get a dom win with a permanent alliance. Just something to think about.
Interesting idea. I can say that Gandhi is not offering one at the moment and he is the only one with Communism just now. Since FDR is our friend I guess he might agree (never tried this wayy of winning so not sure if he would) but we would have to check land areas to see if its worth learning ourselves.

Got the save and am checking out the situation.

6 turns you say. Well, ummm, errr...at least there's no pressure.
