SGOTM 02 - Murky Waters

I like the idea of going for the Colossus. The two island cities will produce a lot of science until astronomy. The AI rarely beelines for it so we might have a good shot at it. We should wait until after economy recovery to go to war.

Just a brainstorming ideea - we could settle on stone island and try to build Great Lighthouse on Kyoto ( or was this already built somewhere ? ).

Anyway - I fully agree with the plan to move palace in Osaka. :)

It has been built already IAFL

Finnished my turns ( I belived that I played 1 more turn :( ).

Unfortunatelly ... bad news. :(

1. Lose 1 Axeman when try to prevent a barb-axeman to pillage our farm near Copper-town. :(
2. Lose exploring Workboat to a barbarian galley ... damn ! it came from nowhere to attack us !!

Some relatively good news :
1. We are 1 turn away from Code of Laws.
2. A settler await on cow-island.
3. Win 3 or 4 battles against barb axeman or archers which try to pillage our improvement.

Neutral news :
1. Christianity found in Sevilla.
2. Taoism founded somewhere ...

Regards all

No worries. Usually, I try to create a defensive situation to up the odds of winning. We can rebuild the farm easier than an axemen but both would be costly.

Nice. Hopefully we'll be able to capture Seville soon.

Nfora is up next.

That doesn't sound too bad. We have to accept the occasional loss of units when dealing with barbs. As a side note, we should always try to defend rather than attack wherever possible to maximise our advantage.

The wb is unfortunate and the lack of one will limit the ability of Cow Island to grow quickly. Do we have another on the way? (Could be worse tho' - could have sunk our galley and settler. Has our galley dealt with it?

Looks like we won't be founding any religions

Can you post some screenshots?

I know this - but our axeman had good odds on it's favor. Still it lose ... :(

The next one will be ready in 1 turn. However - the barb galley could disturb us in that area ... in fact losing that WB is that I regret and consider a bad news.

Can you post some screenshots?

I'll try - but now I should socialize with two of my wife friends for ~2 hrs...
BTW - I found another Spanish town, Barcelona, defended only by 1 archer. Seems that she invested a lot just in religious techs and maybe isn't covered enough ... ;)

The save was uploaded on submision page. Who's next to play now ?

That'd be me, I'll play later this afternoon or this evening. I don't think we'll want to declare war during my turns, but I'll (try to) get a bit of a force put together for us. Are we going to go pottery->metal casting or mathematics->construction or something else? Throw out some ideas for me!

Difficult without seeing any screenshots. I'll try to look at the save game tonight before you play.

Suggest:
  • pottery>metal casting for tech. Avoid masonry just in case we ever get a great prophet for CS
  • settle cow island asap (I presume the settler is on the island?)
  • if barb galley is still around, wait for it to attack our galley
  • rush palace in Osaka (combination of overflow, whips, chop - whatever works!)
  • build second wb or worker (for cows) in Kyoto.....but......
  • whip CH asap in Kyoto once palace built in Osaka
  • first build in cow island should be CH (we can get worker, wbs and archer quicker from Kyoto)
  • continue to explore Isabella's land - we need to know where all her strategic resources are

Bon chance

EDIT: Bear in mind that the palace is a national wonder, so whips will be less effective (33h/pop I think)

Sorry for delay guys !! :mischief:

Here are some pictures. I forget to notice that Christianity spread to Coppertown, but no trace of Buddism.

Regards all

P.S. : I prefered to attack barbs when they are in open field for getting some promotion. Unfortunately ... this tactics have a drawback ...

Hi Guys

Well done Mitui, you had one of those regrouping turns I think. But we are in good shape now. We have a bit of security and now we can move the palace and build couthouses we can start to push on.

I agree with BPs post but think we should get Alphabet soon.

Tech: Pottery>Alphabet>Metal Casting

Priority's: Get palace moved, scout Isabella, build a good attack force (Maybe pre-build one spearmen and axeman in each city without completing to improve maintenance)

That should do it for now!

Just a note Mitui It doesn't look like you are using Binary science. I have noticed from the screenshots that the slider has been set at 40% and 10%. It's a bit of micro-management but it is better to have the slider on 0% or 100% due to rounding errors.

I use "binary science" just in the last 7 turns ( after first moves ).
I let the slider on 10% in the last move, because if I'll put it on 0% Code of Laws will be discovered in 2 turns. :mischief:

My vote for tech : Pottery -> Metal Casting -> Alphabet.
I agree at point of build some military force. BTW - how many units do you belive will be necesary for a ( even partially ) warfare against Isabel ? I assume that we could start when having 5-6 axeman, 2 spearman and 1-2 archer at least ... IF she wouldn't discover Feudalism ( if she will adopt Hereditary Rule ... than this moment could be verrryy close ) .
Seems that we need to be a little more agressive ... I see big scores on graph for some other teams. :crazyeye:

Good luck for the next player ! Regards all. :)

Ok, had a look at the save game:

Cow Island
  • settle
  • hope your galley defeats barb galley when it attacks (~62% chance we win). If so move galley 1E of stone island to dispel FOW and stop further barb galleys spawning. If not - then whip another galley in Kyoto asap
  • grow and whip CH asap

Kyoto
  • reinstate a scientist (2 scientists gives more beakers than working an extra coast tile)
  • build (not whip) wb or worker
  • whip CH when palace moved
EDIT: Actually at 100% science the scientist gives only 1 more beaker than working the coast. So if you need to grow Kyoto quickly, work the coast on 100% science turns. Running 2 scientists gets the next GP quicker tho' (next in 50 turns)

Osaka
  • build palace (overflow/chop/whip)
  • farm rice next (will help grow for whip)

Tech
  • pottery>MC or alpha - whatever sounds good (MC gets us closer to Samurai tho')

Strategy
  • build up army
  • farm rice and mine gold. Farm or cottage FPs
  • continue to explore Spanish lands

I note Isabella has copper - war is going to be tough but we should aim to capture Seville and Barcelona with our first attack

Ok all done.

Highlights:
Found Isabella's capitol... an amazing site, with a lake:

Code of laws is in, we've got some hammers in our palace and a couple of courthouses.
I played cat and mouse with the barbarian galley and our workboat until I could finish another galley in Kyoto, since the RNG decided not to help us out, and we lost our original galley.
I lost no improvements to pillaging, and thoroughly improved Osaka, even connecting a few things. We may want a library there before long.
Built a bit of military, but just an axe or two and a spearman. Put some hammers into a granary in coppertown.
Got pottery, and working on metal casting.
Isabella adopted organized religion.
Isabella also got a great engineer....
I moved our exploring archer most of the way toward the city Isa slipped by us earlier, to take a look in there. I think if we can get 5-6 axemen into position, we ought to be able to start taking her out.

Overall not too much happened. Just a bit boring actually ;)

Nice work nfora :goodjob:

I'm up next.

What do you guys think we should do?

Well - we have just 3 axeman ( I check this morning the save ) - so raise our army to 6 or 7 would be nice. :)
But we also need to switch palace in Osaka - so I don't belive that in the next moves we could train enough units for our "little expeditionary force" ... :mischief:

Anyway - I'm not sure if we should start the campaign against Isabel starting only from our actual 2 cities or build one more ( and if choose to build another city where ... ). Anyway - let's drop for moment ecologistical feelings and chop, chop, chop some trees ... :crazyeye:

Regards all !

Mîtiu Ioan aka Ionutz

P.S. : Don't forget to check if Isabel research Alphabet ... maye we could trade one tech with her ... ;)
