SGOTM 03 - Geezers

I will have left for my holiday in a few hours. There is a remote chance I might pop into an internet cafe or something, but otherwise I will catch up on progress when I am back on 4 March.

I've started playing a game with HOF installed and I agree that there are loads of great improvements there to the info screens. I do get a warning that my game is invalid for HOF though. Not sure if that is an issue for this SGOTM or not though.

It is most likely just that you used play instead of custom game. When you start a new game you have to go through custom and check a box (something like modified assets?) to be eligible to submit for HoF but it won't matter for GOTM. The fact that you are getting the warning should mean your HoF mod is working. :) Have a great holiday!

I can't wait for our thread to open I've been thinking and thinking about this variant. :)

Ok, I've done my shift of hitting refresh every few minutes to see if the thread was up. I'm now moving to the 'watched pot' theory and going out for a few hours to run errands so if the thread opens while I'm gone you can thank me for finally leaving. ;)

yep...one team in SGTOM1 tested out what would happen if they were to declare war on someone who had a defensive pact with their always peace ally...in the actual game, not a test game, and when he found out it would turn their always peace buddy into an always war buddy, he and his team obviously wanted to not do that. However, I believe Alan noticed it, or a spectator saw it and they had to play from that point on...they ended up retiring due to that impact...since he was an always peace friend, they had minimal military around him and were in no way prepared for his assault.(not to mention very outteched militarily by him)

well, that's my serious comment of the day :D let's hope this watched pot boils over sometime soon. I'll be back online at some point either tonight or tomorrow...now its time to buy a birthday cake for my wife :D

GOTM and SGOTM's are not valid HOF games as I recently found out (due to some "Locked Assets" feature) and I read that it is nothing to be concerned about. I am sure one of the other players can give a real response.

yes, there's no reason to worry about that HOF invalid warning. In fact, if you don't ever plan on submitting any games to the HOF in the future, there's an option somewhere to turn that warning off so it doesn't distract you.

That would of course be a very useful option if every game I played didn't seem to be a new GOTM that requires a new version of the HOF mod, and therefore loses all the HOF mod settings I used last time :mischief:

:thanx:
I hope you don't think me too strange for saying this, but I'd like to say 'Thank you' to all of the Geezers for helping my Civ education.

I'll explain. I felt my standard of play was much in need of improvement, and I'd often thought that to have someone good sitting there and telling me what they were thinking about while playing would be the ideal way.
Failing to find a good civ player willing to sit here and rattle on endlessly, I found the SGOTM and started to follow various team threads. After a short while I settled on the Geezers one, mainly because you certainly knew how to play, but even more because you all talked about everything you were thinking of in such depth. I lurked on, treating it as my own personal masterclass. (Hell. This sounds bad. Like I'm confessing to being a stalker!)

I was talking with DynamicSpirit via PM, and told him of my lurking. He suggested the rest of you might be interested.

Anyway. I've already noticed an improvement in my next GOTM - where everything neatly slotted together for a diplo victory! Only time will tell if this new standard keeps up. But it's already enough for me to say
Cheers!

I'll be following your progress in SGOTM04.

Always pleased to hear from lurkers. :) I'm glad to hear your game has improved. :goodjob: Have you tried looking at Sisiutil's ALC threads? There's certainly lots of discussions about the best way to do things in them. I've certainly found them helpful.

ditto, always pleased to hear from our lurkers. Congrats on your recent diplo victory....now if only I could figure out how to get my GOTMs to improve because of these SGOTMs :p

@ AgedOne: I think you made a good choice of mentors! :goodjob: Now, not intending to steal you from Geezers, but if you ever find that your appetite for lurkmeat is still active after you have consumed what they have to offer, I think you will find similar fare in Gypsy Kings. Just don't go giving either of us the other's secrets during a game! ;)

Think how horrible it would be if they shared playing tips..... The wooden spoons vs the tin cups

(in the Geezers thread)
My reaction to the rich fare of lurkmeat in the GK thread: :vomit:

PS. Apologies - I meant to post this in the trash-talking thread that our (MW) SGOTM3 thread seems to have turned into ;)

Now how have I managed to miss them? I am aware of Sisiutil. I've read some of his strategy articles, but somehow managed not to notice the ALC threads.
(Sheesh! He's only on his 13th, after all)

Thanks for the tip.
I'm going to spend some time over there right now. :)

Pretty sure I did spend a little time in the GK's thread. You do have plenty to say in there. I guess I just had to settle on one to follow in depth, to avoid mentally clashing gears every time I dropped into a different thread.
I may well be dropping in to see how SGOTM04 goes.
(OH, and Lurkmeat? :yuck: Sounds like something from the seamier end of the butchers shop. Could be a really foul nickname for a new forum member to take)

Thanks for the tip.

Glad you found the link helpful.

Btw ignore the ignore interloping ****oos who are trying to take over our thread. ;) They're only jealous because we've has a complimentary comment from a lurker. :p

I assume you primarily mean that lurkmeat-on-the-hoof, BP ;) Thrallia has been hanging out a bit a GK, and I think we have been more than hospitable.

I used to think BP was animated bacon, but the more I read his ramblings, the more I am convinced he is animated baloney! Given the fare he has to consume at MW, it's no wonder he is hurling all the time! :mischief:

I will grant MW the brilliance of execution of their UN givaway and diplomatic management in SGOTM 3. But to grant them the kind of superiority they now assume must await their proving that they are more than a one-trick-hog.

We shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills,
we shall fight in other people's threads,
we shall fight wherever the reputation of Gypsy Kings is threatened.
We shall never surrender.

The Boar Wars continue ...

With apologies to Winston Churchill

I assume you primarily mean that lurkmeat-on-the-hoof, BP ;) lurkmeat-on-the-trotter surely?Thrallia has been hanging out a bit a GK, and I think we have been more than hospitable. "More lurkmeat Thrallia?" "I couldn't possibly dV" "Oh go on please. We have plenty of good quality fare here at team GK".....

....

I will grant MW the brilliance of execution of their UN givaway and diplomatic management in SGOTM 3 not to mention beating both you guys by a few centuries..... But to grant them the kind of superiority they now assume must await their proving that they are more than a one-trick-hog.
Well, it is hard to teach an old hog new tricks. But I am confident we will prevail against Geezers and GK in the next episode of the Battle for the Bacon Laurels (Gandhi is currently building his 3rd SS casing as we speak ;) )
