SGOTM 04 - Gypsy Kings

So Immac, what is yours in? Are you on the normal time path (getting it somewhere in your 20's), or something stranger like me (getting it in my 50's!  )
dV

I was on the regular path (somewhere in my late 20's). Mine is in veterinary microbiology. I did my thesis research project on Herpes Simplex Virus Infection of Cattle and its regulation from latent to active states through regulated intramembrane proteolysis of a protein called Luman. Pretty complex for non-scientists but really its more big words then big and original thoughts.

All the big words make perfect sense to me, as my late 20's doctoral degree was my MD. So veterinary micro is a kindred field! :goodjob: This early 50's Epidemiology PhD is part of a midlife career shift from patient care to preventive medicine and public health. I'm looking at the risk factors for rapid increase in hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes after diagnosis, by applying a novel (I think) analysis approach to data from a 1960's study (where subjects were on a fixed dose of medication for 5+ years, a necessity for my analysis and not done since or possible now). That's my set of big words :D (which I suspect make perfect sense to you ;) ).

So are you taking your degree to academia, industry, or something else?

After examining the save, I decided there was no need for discussion. We are in a dog fight with equivalent weapons. This is about numbers and tactics right now.

I had luck go both ways for me with the RNG gods. See the logs for details. The short of it is we now own Turfan.:D The cities to the east have few troops I believe, one of the Caravels is on the way for recon. There is a big stack at Karakorum, but I'm still not sure if it is enough, a new enemy unit showed up each of the last 2 turns. There are 2 Berserkers and a cat headed for Kahns metal. I couldn't take it out, but I made it a top priority and dedicated those 3 units to make sure the job gets done!

I switched civics to Hereditary Rule and Vassalge to support the war effort.

@ Imac, If you pop rush a library after a captured city comes out of anarchy, and follow with a Barracks, we'll get the overflow bonus on the Barracks as an aggressive leader and have both buildings in 2-3 turns. Thats what I did in Turfan. You may need to rush the Longbow there also as there is at least 1 Crossbow in the eastern city that is causing problems. I'd leave all the Spears in the north as Kahn has no mounted units and Gandhi keeps landing more in the north.

The only 2 points for discussion may be the promotions for the Cats, and do we have enough units at Karakorum to attack next turn?

I almost always promote CR1,2,3, and never use collateral damage. I figure I want better odds at winning, no matter how slight. I did not attack Karakorum this turn because I felt that we needed at least all 6 cats to start the assault. Good Luck!

Well, there is some fast play! Good work g_s and R1! :goodjob:

Tactical choice: Either attack Karakorum or move our SOD east. Which is better? Karakorum could be a bloodbath now ... 4 LB most at CG2, 3 maces with combat 3, 2 CB, all entrenched and on a hill. We only have 3 berzerkers in attack position. Even if we take it, can we hold it? Seems risky to me. He has 13 defenders, we have 14 attackers, but 6 are cats. After the necessary sac of 3 to 4 cats, I can't see how we kill all in one turn, and then survivors heal and promote. And if he pop rushes an LB between, ouch!

Alternative: let's pillage the farm and the road where the SOD is now. This slows K's ability to move north to attack us. Then next turn move the least promoted berserker, the spear and the two non-medic axes to the forest north of Karakorum, to hold K's troops there. Move the rest of the stack east to capture K's eastern cities with the berzerkers moving to the metal. Use some of the pillage gold to promote two axes to berzerkers. Try to save as many cats as possible. Then bring this more experienced stack west to Karakorum, we will have even more berzerkers from the north by that time.

Lets rename our New Sarai as "Our Sarai" since K has his own New Sarai. Our Sarai needs some defenders!!

We could make horse archers in Ferrous ... one every 4 turns. They may be our best antidote to crossbows, and they can move south fast.

Research: culture bridge means we can attack Washington with galleys. So lets switch from Asto to engineering for the trebs. Then we can attack with a mix of barrage cats for colllat damage, and CR trebs. This combo has worked well for me before.

City review:

Nidaros: WW an issue ... unhappy after 2 more pop. Gpers in 12 turns, 8 turns if we add scientist, 6 turns if we add 2. I'd say lets add one. If we come off the forest, we stagnate the pop, but maybe that isn't so bad given the WW.

Cibola: GS in 10 turns, 7 if we add a scientist.

Florence: Unhappy after 3 more pop so OK for now.

OZ: Grows in 1, second sugar plantation about ready to begin construction with 3 workers.

Ferrous: after this berzerker, need a granary I think ... whip it after 1 turn of production into it and then make horse archers.

New Sarai (Our Sarai): I might switch to theatre here ... we want to pop the gold and the corn.

Turfan: We have a 5% chance of revolt ... switch to theatre, pop rush it after 1 turn, run an artist until we pop the border and end the revolt threat.

That is my 2 cents for now.

dV

Immac, we get two Great Persons in your turnset ... right up your alley it would seem! ;)

What does a GS bulb next? Or, if the two are different, would a golden age be just the thing to boost troop output for our conquest of Khan?

If we get two GS maybe bulb if it is the right tech (engineering?). Otherwise, I kind of like the golden age ... spam troops, take eastern cities as I wrote above, then the golden age horde of troops descends from the north while the veteran stack from the east now moves westward, and we overwhelm Karakorum! :goodjob:

Golden age is what, 8 turns? At least 4 zerks from Nidaros, 4 HA from Ferrous, maybe 4 cats from Florence ... a nice stack to join the veterans. ;)

If we can bulb some good trade bait, or a tech we really need, that is good too.

dV

I believe that stack is overkill for the cities in the east. I had a quick look in the closest city and there were only 2 units. I killed the archer and then Kahn countered from the city in the NE, that is where I got really lucky with th RNG. Only lost the injured Axe, 2 Spears won against long odds. I'll bet there are only 6-7 total units in the east, we'll be able to see after we take out the iron. I'll have more to say later when I get a chance to look at the save again and check out the GP chart.

Well, I believe in the Powell doctrine of overwhelming force. Assuming that we aren't going to attack Karakorum right away (but the question is still open, I suppose), we leave some of the stack there in my plan, in the forest, to tie up his defenders. If the rest is still overkill, then split it in half and attack both eastern cities at once. Or, attack one with the whole stack, and the unused and uninjured units go right to the second city.

I think I am only talking about moving 2 berzerkers, 2 axes and all the cats east. Reason to bring all the cats is that if there are some near dead defenders to kill, let the cats do it for the promotions.

What I like about the conquer east first approach is that the cities are far from Gandhi, our rear is then secure as we go west, and we end up with more troops with more experience when we do go for Karakorum.

dV

edit: crossposted with g_s ... we are thinking along the same lines, it seems.

If we split the stack, I think we leave 1 cat behind as well to keep the the cuture down. We may want to pillage around Karakorum more also.

@dV, I did not attack Karakorum for all of the reasons that you stated. I feel that we need at least 6 Cats and 6 Berserkers to lead the assault. It only had about 8 defenders when I got the save, but added some along the way.

I think we are moving toward a consensus to attack elsewhere first.

I would keep Nidaros heavy on the hammers as our top troop builder, with the HE there, we almost need to keep it producing units non-stop.
Cibola: GS in 10 turns, 7 if we add a scientist.
The GS will lightbulb Paper. I'm not sure if that is the best option right now, I'm open to suggestions. Maybe an Academy in Cibola, Gandhi will appreciate it later also. Cibola needs to be the backup Berserk producer if Gandhi gets to many units headed for OZ.
New Sarai (Our Sarai): I might switch to theatre here ... we want to pop the gold and the corn.
New Sarai (Our Sarai) will have it's 1st culture pop this turn, we just need to take out Karakorum and the new city in the W to take advantage of it.
Ferrous: after this berzerker, need a granary I think ... whip it after 1 turn of production into it and then make horse archers.
This is our #2 hammer city, we are working 6 pretty good tiles right now. I might wait a little longer to pop rush, build 1 Horse Archer and then pop rush the Granary after a turn or 2.
Turfan: We have a 5% chance of revolt ... switch to theatre, pop rush it after 1 turn, run an artist until we pop the border and end the revolt threat.
It might go into anarchy again, but it won't flip while we are war, I would continue with the LB, pop rush it next turn after we get 1 invested.
OZ: Grows in 1, second sugar plantation about ready to begin construction with 3 workers.
Oz is going to grow fast now, we will be able to pop rush some things after the second sugar comes on line. I would always chop the jungle first and then build the plantation and then the road. You always get the use of a better tile sooner that way. Those 3 workers will chop the jungle in 2 turns, making it a viable tile before the plantation comes on line. We need to keep a high # of troops here, our economy takes a pretty big hit when we can't work the gems!
Immac, we get two Great Persons in your turnset ... right up your alley it would seem!
We will only get 1 this set, the GS from Cibola, unless we stagnate Cibola to let Nidaros pass it. That might be the best plan, because if we add a scientist to Cibola later, it will get to next GP faster than Nidaros could.

A GM would lightbulb paper also. A GE we would not want to use on lightbulb I don't think. A GA would lightbulb part of Divine Right. I'm open to suggestions on how best to use the next GP or 2. I do favor speeding the the GP in Nidaros to pass Cibola and then speeding Cibola to the GS at 600.
Golden age is what, 8 turns? At least 4 zerks from Nidaros, 4 HA from Ferrous, maybe 4 cats from Florence ... a nice stack to join the veterans.
Golden age is 10 turns on Epic speed. I would not normally consider it this early in a game, but this is not a normal game.:crazyeye:

There was only 1 LB in the new western city Tiflis after I killed the galley that dropped the settler/LB. There are 3 new Berserkers coming S from Nidaros that could probably go straight to Tiflis in the west and take it out.

I think it is critical that we take out the iron ASAP, but I would not attack until I had all 3 units grouped together.

There is a Galley healing in OZ. How much, if any, should we bother Gandhi's shipping in the west?

My 2+ cents.

All good points, R1! ;)

What do you think about research ... stay with Astro or switch to engineering?

Long term I think we want to replace Washington with Ragnar. Can we get there with just galleys (using open borders)? If so, maybe eng in better. But perhaps fast astro is perfect trade bait to catch up in techs?

The bulbing seems to have little appeal, maybe the Gage is the way to go ... more troops, get next tech fast, wipe out K faster, head toward Wash faster.

In which case I might spend six turns getting a great in Nidaros before we get one in Cibola.

Academies ... if we choose that we might want to build them in Khan's cities so we have use of them ... G can build his own faster than we can I suspect. Depends on how soon we give Cibola to G ...

The key to us getting a shot at laurels may be how soon we can let G have Cibola. I am tempted to let him take it as soon as Khan is dead. Or maybe we wait till we get astro? I think the Gage may be the move that allows us to give Cibola to G sooner.

Only the Russians appear to have made a huge gift to G yet, per culture graphs, so if we can give him a big gift before other teams, we may be ahead of them in this race despite a lower score! :goodjob:

I don't think we have the strength to do too much sea damage yet. I'd try to save our ships for the move west to America (Leif Erickson, anyone?)

Overview:

Trades:
I renegotiate all our trades:
Brennus: Corn and Gems for Silver and Silk
Mehmed: Wheat for Gems
Washington: Gems for 6gpt
Hannibal: Gold for3gpt

Economy and Research:
  • Research:
I agree that we should continue to research astronomy. We are unable to partake in any tech-trading currently and that is mostly because we don’t have anything to trade. So astronomy because no one else has it and not engineering because most others have it.
  • Economy:
We are running 40% research, and its not because of war-weariness ‘cause otherwise we would be running the culture slider. The reason is that we have TWO cottages (and one was captured from the Mongols). We are currently in the process of building another cottage (and its in our production-specialized city). We have 6 workers for 7 cities so cottages aren’t going to be appearing very quickly.
Additionally, we haven’t a single courthouse… maybe we should.
Lastly, we have a single warrior up on a hill watching Ghandi. Do we absolutely need him?

Cities:
Cibolda: is working one unimproved tiles. I set it to a scientist as suggested by DaV and R1.
New Serai: we won’t grab tiles off the new Mongolian city without serious culture. Better to just make due with what we have until such time as we either raze or capture that city.
Turfan: agree that a theatre is not worth the hammers. The Mongolian capital won’t be there forever and in by the time we can effectively use Turfan, the cultural pressure will be gone.

Here is what I propose:
Leave two cities for military: Ferrous and Nidaros. Nidaros produces the offensive troops (berserkers, cats). Ferrous produces defensive and responsive troops (longbowmen and horse-archers). Ferrous should also build a courthouse.
Oz- let it grow to size four and spit out a few workers to help get our countryside into shape.
Turfan and New Sarai should build courthouses (this is more important then barracks sorry to say).
Florence: was supposed to be our GPP city (but never was apparently  ). Seems to be a military production city currently, so continue to specialize it towards that. Maybe build a worker at some point.

We need to get our economy in gear. The fact that we are last in score and last in research is probably 100% due to an underdeveloped economy.
Our stack is large enough to threaten and capture the smaller Mongolian cities. Leave the capital for now (as suggested previously)

Okay, so I am going to play according to what I have proposed here tomorrow (Sunday) unless someone posts otherwise.

Immac.

Sounds like a solid plan Imac. On the cottage issue, or lack there of, the thing I see right now, what tiles would you give up if you wanted to use a cottage instead. I think we have made pretty good use of the land so far. If we made a mistake early, it may have been not trying to take Kahn out sooner.

I guess we'll have to use cottage tiles for our new cities. I agree that we are making effective use of our tiles.
I wasn't trying to criticize, i was trying to determine why we are stuck at 40% research at 1160AD.

Bad news:
We lost a marble quarry, our source of corn in the north and a mine in the north.
We lost a city (Turfan) to the Mongols.
I tried to renogiate trade deals at the end of the round and no one had any spare money (but i did get all the happiness and health resources i could grab).

Good news:
We won two cities (the Mongolian's eastern ones).
We got a great scientist, i used him to build an academy in our gold city (cibolda).
We got 4 new workers (thanks Khan) who were holed up in the western Mongolian cities.

Suggestions:
Get 2-3 caravels into northern waters to prevent Ghandi dropping troops near Ferrous. His incursions cost us quite a bit of pillaging (and a beserker).
Build more catapults (i killed about 4-5 taking those two cities).

Anyway, have a look at the save. Its a tough run because the Khan is such a tough opponent.

Oh yeah, more bad news. Two of our opponents have Astronomy now (Mehmed grabbed it with liberalism i think).

Good work Immac! :goodjob:

New Sarai (ours) is the lost city ... getting culture squeezed anyway, and one less thing to defend now. We'll rebuild it later.

I think I will take a page out of R1's book ... seems clear cut that we go after Khan, hold off G, beeline astro. It is really all pretty tactical.

Any interest in keeping Tiflis? I think no, because there is no food there. Better to rebuild Our Sarai for the gold and the corn.

So I am going to start playing ... I'll stop if anything worrisome comes up.
