SGOTM 04 - Team VQ

Okay, as there's still no sign of Maquis, Bob, or Healium, this is my got-it for playing sometime today.

So I opened up the save ...

... and felt strongly tempted to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head.

Izzy, Brennus, and Hannibal all have Rocketry. We know the Brennus has already completed Apollo. We're well beyond the stage when handing cities over to Gandhi would be any use; the only way forward now is military all the way, mostly likely going out in a blaze of glory beneath the rocket motors of our enemies.

But military simply means a build-up for the time being: we are in no shape for war. Brennus has tanks and we still have spears and longbows in some cities, and insufficient funds to fully modernise our army. So if we are not ready to go to war with Brennus, perhaps somebody else might. Looking at the diplomatic options I see that Brennus is willing to consider war with Hannibal; unfortunately, he won't do it out of the goodness of his heart and we don't have anything to offer him. One turn later, and even this option had been redded out: Hannibal is now his "close friend". Drat

So it looks like we have no choice: we will be declaring war at some point with some or all of the others, but this turnset will be about building up our forces in preparation. I'm also holding off the Golden Age for a little while until it is of more obvious benefit.

Things are fairly uneventful. To amuse myself I kill any Indian ships that come too close. Gandhi is now starting to upgrade his frigates to ironclads. He's obviously more interested in exploring the oceans than reaching space.

Brennus completed Casing No. 1 on turn 4, with No. 2 following immediately afterwards.

On turn 6 Hannibal got his first Casing. This was also the point at which Flight was finished. I set research to Electricity (beelining to Industrialism for tanks/battleships/marines; I decided not to waste time going for Scotland Yard) and checked the diplomatic options...

At this point I noticed something interesting and as a result made a trade that may be somewhat controversial and cause some complaints:

civ4warlords20070521155nv9.jpg

It may seem strange giving Brennus a military tech when we will most likely be going to war with him, but my reasoning is that he is already so far ahead that giving him Flight will make relatively little difference - to him. On the other hand, getting Electricity brings us significantly closer to tanks and marines, which are most likely our best hope (coupled with planes and ships) for an assault. And as far as I can see Flight cannot now assist his efforts in the space race. So I decided to take the risk - we don't have much left to lose ;)

With Electricity now in I started the Golden Age and turned up Science, dropping Industrialism from 11 to 7 turns.

As you can see, at the end of the turnset we have three turns left on Industrialism, with six turns remaining of our GA. Hannibal and Brennus both have 3 Casings built:

civ4warlords20070521184xs1.jpg

I built some transports, destroyers and fighters, as well as some artillery; I think we now have enough transports so let's concentrate on filling them! Once Industrialism is done perhaps we should choose Radio for bombers?

Good luck!

Conquest of the new world it is... lets see if we can take down those nasty AI before they launch....

Looks like a nice set Scowler, who is brave enough for the next set??

Lets see...

It is either (reluctant and moving (still???)) Cosmic, or me...
If we dont hear anything in a day I will pick it up Wednesday...

What about Bob?

Bobrath got assigned out of town on a "problem" customer that is frankly not worth the time or travel, but since Bob wants to afford the house he lives in and the food he eats... well Civ has to take a backdoor to playing cleanup of other's professional messes.

I am still reading, and if it gets time right, I'll play my turn when it comes up. I'll post a got it within lets say 12 hours if I'm going to play at all - otherwise skip away.

:crazyeye:

I know that feeling

C'mon guys, all we have to do is lose. I'm sure even we can manage that :mischief:

Feels like I am just simply going through motion of playing, but I'm actually hoping to build up military. I think we must keep pumping up military and go for a major showdown with Brennus or Hannibal. The timing of war should be around 40~50 more turns of build up.

Brennus has gunships, so tanks only is obviously wrong. We should probably get rocketry next for SAM Infantries.

Around the same time we pull a mass army over, we should probably vacate our current cities for Gandhi to takeover. Careful though, we don't want Brennus or Hannibal to snatch the empty cities from Gandhi. But that's a few more turnsets away.

>>> The Save (1825AD) <<<

Are people still interested in continuing this? I can understand player losing motivation on continuing a hopeless venture, but I appreciate some notifications instead of just disappearing. If you see it meaningless on continue, just say so, I am perfectly fine with it. If you are still interested in embracing sure-death, please also let me know when you intend to play. It is this deafening silence that frustrates me.

Yep, still interested in continuing, although I won't be able to play for a couple of days. I hate to abandon a game.

I completely understand Bob's work situation, and it seems like Cosmic must have run into serious problems moving appartment, but it's a shame that nobody else has checked in recently.

Has even our lurker abandoned us???

As an outside observer who has been reading your thread every morning at work, I hereby demand screenshots of a blaze of glory. :D

If that motivates you at all.

Thanks Frank and ccccc. Nice to know that somebody is still watching :)

Assuming nobody is desperate to take the save before then I'll probably play this tonight/tomorrow morning :viking:

Sorry, dear audience, still nothing much in the way of fireworks. :p

Gandhi mounted an amphibious assault:

civ4warlords20070609114nt3.jpg

In return, I peeked into his capital:

civ4warlords20070609121hi5.jpg

Brennus and Hannibal each completed a thruster (and I know exactly what they can do with them... :satan: )

And so the game staggers on...
