SGOTM 04 - Team VQ

woo hoo!

Then I'll try to pick it up in a reasonable time frame after you destroy the hordes (muah ha ha).

Played 5 turns only ... but it gets us to a nice round figure, plus I repelled a large invasion force.

Before that, I decided to help our vassal a bit:

vq4-AD1895-gift-mehmed.jpg

I gifted him all the resources that we have extra copies (since there is no corporation yet ;)).

Then, a city was razed amphibiously ....

vq4-AD1896-raze.jpg

But it is getting exceedingly difficult. This last razing cost us 2 CR-amphi Infantries due to bad roll (both has over 80% odds), plus each time we raze a city, we have to sacrifice one scapegoat at the city ruins site.

I am currently combining both navy stack (our injured ships are being picked off by Brennus as his ship attacks and then go hide in the city), they are right now up north. I suggest, however, that we bring the stack back, upgrades those infantries to Mech Inf, before setting off again. We were too hasty in the declaration, should have build a bit more (like we did in Hannibal's case).

Highlight of my turns is Brennus' landing:

vq4-AD1897-brennus-landings.jpg

He razed Philadelphia (no way we can stop it), but then spread out to presumably pillage. That is a mistake the AI always made (at least prior to Blake's improvement).

vq4-AD1898-forces.jpg

I then picked them off one by one, and they were eliminated 2 turns later. All these fightings gain us a warlord, which I used on a pikeman:

vq4-AD1900-warlord.jpg

Unfortunately no amphibious attack ... but a CR3 Mech Inf is always good.

The annoying part is although Phila is razed, another city was now totally enveloped into mehmed's culture :aargh:

Yes.... and the heckling from the new posters is too much to bear!!!

Played 10 turns... where are we now? Brennus and Izzy will settle for peace (I wonder what happens if we take peace with Izzy first (being a vassal)...)

I really wanted to take out Bioracte in the far north since its a capital for a certain thorn in our side... too bad its on a hill. I did go ahead an pillage the nearby oil platform. What to do? Throw units against a wall and hope for the best? NO!!! Instead I go to the nearby ghetto of Vienne which while still on a hill is much less defended. Some lucky rolls later (first combat won with 30% odds), losing only one tank!!! we capture (and raize) Vienne. One thing I learned - take out the last unit in a city with a gunship. Then capture the city as normal with another unit - since it doesn't have to attack any units to take it - boom shacka lacka, you don't have to leave a unit on the ground for sacrifice!

As I continued to slide along the north coast, I intercepted and sank two destroyers and the transports they were escorting. It cost us two ships of our own, but I considered it worth it. BTW, our northern navy is attracting airplanes like flies. We are rarely above 50% health with the ships, making any real naval engagement rough. I've done my best to get more jet fighters over to the two carriers to make us less likely to absorb bullets.

Ankara changed hands... a lot. I would take it with one unit, and give it right away back to Mehmed. Then Izzy would capture it back, leaving a weak unit (cavalry anyone?) for me to get an easy promotion on.

I made a valiant attempt to take out Verlamion - the far north eastern city of Brennus - it has Rock n Roll and looked tasty. All the good rolls from Vienne came back to haunt us here. I had to cut the attack and have relegated our navy to lurking for lesser cities (I really wanted it bad tho!!!).

In the mean time I landed and amassed a massive stack of mech infantry just outside of the Statue of Liberty... Artillery is slowly coming over to reduce the defences from 80%. In the meantime however, our mech inf and sams are eating up the airforce trying to hurt us. Its almost too much fun. Next player should be able to cause Izzy some distinct hurting.

One very important not for all players - Brennus is parking battleship/carrier pairs off our coasts and managed to take out the oil resources - this cost us some turns on the advanced stuff. Make sure we keep the oil rigs defended and be ready to rebuild asap.

We popped a GE and I sent him to the capital to help rush the Space Elevator - to deny it to Brennus and eventually gifting to Ghandi. Brennus lacks the Engine and the Stasis chamber.

If you really want peace - here's the offers available to us:

and here's part of the reason:

Spoiler logs and such up later.

Save is HERE

Further thoughts for the next player and players:

Anything we can do to deny oil, uranium, and aluminum to Brennus is a *great* thing. It will halt his military builds, cause all sorts of problems for the spaceship parts. Yes it will be expensive to "waste" stealth bomb runs to take out a mine or platform, but the long term game will require it (unfortunately). When Brennus denied Oil to me, I felt it hard as suddenly all my towns had to stop building the lucious advanced builds and resorted to just infantry (mech, sam, or marine). We can do the same.

Izzy is not going to fall over today, but I'd suggest that raizing her southern two cities (even tho they have shrines and wonders in them) will create a nice big land void buffer for our buddy Mehmed. It will also remove an aluminum resource from her bounty (its pillaged but still in her cultural purvey).

If we do pound Izzy hard enough... she may drop out of vassalage to Brennus - and perhaps capitulate to us? If so, do it. We're in no shape to destroy Brennus, but we're catching him. The weight of our hammers will eventually crush him.

His destroyers (and some subs) are really going crazy on our sea resources. Eventually we'll have to do something about them so that our transports can safely transport units to the front. Don't forget to airlift every chance we get to keep the pressure on.

Finally - we need to keep in the back of our minds the necessity of giving up land to Ghandi - perhaps starting with that lone city to the north of our capital... tho I'm not sure how we can encourage that attack since he has shown zero interest in it.

I was thinking that a civic revolt would make a ton of sense. We're already in the "right" religious civic, but moving some of the others might be worth the 3+ turn anarchy.

At the very least Police State would help with the military builds AND the ww we've got going on.

I revolted to Police State and State Property ... 3 turns of anarchy, but it must be done, me thinks.

vq-AD1910-civics.jpg

I also take Barcelona ... it houses more than Versailles and Statue of Liberty.

vq-AD1911-barcelona.jpg

I moved our naval forces back to mechanize the CR infantries, and also to build up more strike forces and allow ships to heal. I caught Brennus sneaking a transport, it was promptly taken out.

vq-AD1912-brennus-transport.jpg

Someone undo my gifts to Mehmed ... why? Keeping him strong is to our interest (although he did build the apollo later on). I did not give him aluminium, stone, marble ... only oil, copper horses, and some happy/health resources.

vq-AD1912-mehmed.jpg

Got a fish in the process ... and he had the nerve to complain it's highway robbery  ... more like "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" to me.

One more gift for Mehmed:

vq-AD1913-Ankara.jpg

Brennus did it again, the sneaky thingy, only this time he brings more than one transport and one destroyer:

vq-AD-1916-brennus-stack.jpg

Geez ....

Fortunately, our navy stack is still around there (as you can see in the picture). I moved the stack to the city, unloaded the forces (that way, the forces still has movement point), and start decimating that stack. It cost us one CR Mech Inf (bad roll, had 80% I remember) and an MA, plus some other units, but they were decimated.

Back to Spain, we razed Seville:

vq-AD1918-Serville.jpg

I suggested moving on to raze one more city before heading straight on for Madrid.

vq-AD1920-forces.jpg

The naval strike force that we had are still in our ports, I suggest doing build up of marines, battleships, Jet Fighters, and Modern Armors before heading off for Brennus again.

One news which I don't know if it is good or bad, Gandhi is featuring Battleships now.

>>> The Save (1920AD) <<<

Oh, BTW, game crashed at 1916, I immediately uploaded an autosave to CFC, downloaded the save from CFC and played from there. Hope it does not create trouble.

Good stuff there (as always GreyFox). I assume (since you didn't mention it) that Brennus has not built any more spaceship parts - leaving us 2 parts short of the wrong kind of loss.

I appreciate that great movement we've done against Izzy... Has anyone checked to see if 1) we can decimate her enough to get her out of vassalage with Brennus (and then obviously under our "wing") and/or 2) can we take peace from her while staying at war with Brennus... Since he is the real target and anything we can do to speed up our ability to stomp him down is a good thing.

Hmmm.... one other thing to keep in mind - we shouldn't vassalize everyone else because then they have to be at war with Ghandi and that could be less then optimal. Not to mention it means G will have to self research the entire way up the tree!

And just to keep beating a horse - did we disconnect any of Brennus' Aluminum, Oil, or Uranium? (we did great stuff to Izzy which is a good first step)

Nope, no more space parts from Brennus/Izzy ... busy producing troops I suppose. He has been sending troops down south to Mehmed, and also transporting them west to our northern city of homeland continent (which fortunately our bulk of troops were back home ... pure luck. we should beefed up naval defense everywhere).

I did not see any message abt Izzy freeing from Brennus' tyranny, I guess we must raze a few more cities.

I regret that I lost a few stealth bombers trying to bomb stuff, so I decided not to try anymore. Thus, no, we did not destroy any mines/wells of brennus.

On the other hand, Gandhi did produce a couple of casings.

--

Stealth bombers can be *so* nice to reduce stacks of city defenders - IF you have a big enough stack of your own to absorb the air defenses. On the other hand, if we can apply that same logic to resource defenses - its a matter of finding the right size stack to go after resources. Wish I knew the calculation for percent chance an air unit has of destroying a resource...

Picking this up for playing soon-ish
