SGOTM 05 - Trash Team

What about settling 1E of gold (1N of Y), fit in mysticism (we have a few turns until the settler), city can work gold whle building monument and work rice after border pop (coz we're not prioritising agric), gives us stone if we're going for 'mids.

If we're going for invading neighbours etc then optimal dot map ain't important.
optimal dotmap is still important.
We want some production ability soon.

I suggest choosing between

Solution 1)
2 more cities without needing culture (stone + clams and gold + rice), going for the pyramids in stone city, and building troops/workers/settlers in capital and gold city

Solution 2)
2 more cities needing culture which would be cam's X + Y moved 1 NE.
Those are better long term cities, obviously although they will take a while to take off. They would give us more landtiles for a domination win with fewer cities (maintenance will be hard to keep under control, so I guess we will need it).

I'd go with nr. 1 but forget the pyramids. With our production it'll take something
like 60+ turns to complete them. I'd rather take Sally out ASAP. If his capital has good prouction we can try for the 'mids there.

Stone is a pretty naff resource so no need to prioritise it unless we're going for wonders. This makes gold city first priority.

Edit: Tried (and failed) to load 3100bc save; got 'modified to protect assets' type error message. I've pmed AlanH.

Getting absolutely nowhere. Can anyone else load the savegame?

Pigswill have you checked out the maintenance thread? Some people have encountered similar problems.

I have indeed. Mucked around with loading gotm mod in program files etc and got nowhere.

So many players seem to have problems loading this game. What a nuissance!

What I had to do for this game is. Uninstall civ4 (not expansions) Reinstall, Install downloaded patch 1.74 and install the mod. Then it worked.

I noticed lordofcivs signed up late for this game. As we are only 6, I think we could use another player to complement the team. Any objections to lordofcivs joining?

one more isn't going to hurt us, we're a bunch of skippers

So I uploaded the game, it opens smoothly, no problem.
Guess you have to reinstall the HofMod correctly.

This is a "got it". I will play up to BW, and come back for more.

edit : I played the "half round" and uploaded teh save, if you want to look at it.
summary : I pressed enter 9 times.

turn log :
Turn 34, 2980 BC: You have discovered Archery!

Turn 38 : we have a worker. I moved it to the forest to start chopping (not much else to do)
Turn 38, 2860 BC: You have discovered Bronze Working!

Turn 39, 2830 BC: The revolution has begun!!!
Turn 39, 2830 BC: Temujin adopts Slavery!

I suggest a change in priority :

Is there anything to be gained by racing for copper?

We've got no need of strategic resources for early barb defense, what with them being our best buddies, and there's water aplenty to protect us from the neighbours in the short term.

In any other game, the spot Cabert's recommending would be exactly where I'd stick settler #1, but this isn't any other game. Just wondering if one of the alternative city sites would be better for early rex/research?

OK, good point.
So we stick with gold rice city?
Please note that :
1) the copper isn't under jungle
2) there is a forested grasshill available.
If we wait, we risk that the copper gets covered with jungle.
If we don't we get an acceptable early production city , with reasonnable potential later on.
Of course, it has a lot less commerce than gold rice, but it's also a lot nearer.

I think both sites are useful.

Let's settle gold/rice first to fund REX. Then we can immediately build another 2-3 settlers for stone, copper and clams site.

I'm in favour of building 3 settlers in the capital before anything else.

I'll let lordofcivs know he's welcome.

I almost agree.
I would slip a workboat in between for further recon.

Did I mention we gained archery from our barb allies? An archer or 2 in order to grow a bit would be welcome too. They can be built in the new cities though.

Dont mind a workboat. Archers can be built in new cities, capital will be stuck on small size while building settlers, anyway.

Btw, I am back from holidays!

cabert, it's your turnset. Go ahead and play your remaining turns.

After you Cam can take his set as it is almost weekend. Then Stuge and Patagonia are up. Pigswill can inserted into the roster when his installation is fixed, hopefully soon!

Roster
Remconius
Pigswill (skipped due to load problems)
cabert (Up for 25 Turns, played 9)
Cam_H (on deck for 20)
Stuge(15 turns)
patagonia (15 Turns)

Keep Karakorum building settlers and workers, it's not like it's useful for anything else.

I'd go for the copper first, just because it'll be a b*tch if it gets covered in jungle. Axes would pretty much ensure success if we decide to do some early whacking.

As for techs, agri-> AH?

next tehs are fishing>sailing to give our allies some boats :)
agri is coming in slowly all by itself

edit : the turn counter tells me it's turn 45 already. I have the feeling I played more than 15, although I mostly pressed enter.
So a brief summary :
- our "BW first" pays off : the bars have 2 axemen already. 1 is on the continent next to india, with a few animals
- we acquired archery for free. I researched what was still missing of fishing, and started sailing.
- our settler is still 19 turns away. I started mining the pigs hill because it's going to be along time before we can use the pigs for food.
- the circumnavigation bonus could be had from barb exploration! go barbs!

edit 2 :
I just checked, and since I'm playing Pigswill's turnset, I'll go for 5 more turns before giving the game to the next player.

edit 3 :
- 2530 cyrus and tokugawa adopt slavery!
I checked for agri (our worker is a bit short on work), it's 7 turns away (time for 1 chop). It may not be worth it.
I would go on chopping, then follow the settler to mine the copper (or the gold, if that's the decision).
I think agri will be in in 10/20 turns without investing research.
