SGOTM 07 - Fifth Element

1500th post in this thread :D

I'll be starting my study this monday, and I fear I'll be very very busy then, so I'll probably only be able to lurk next time around.

1501 with this one
If you missed it there's a sign-up thread open for SG8 on BtS.

I hope we all be back together again.

Sorry Sweeta i didn't watch this thread in the last days.

Something to keep us busy. I have tried to get everything the same as the screen shot. Goody Huts have been left in. Can anyone advise if they are normally removed in the SGOTMs? The announcement stated that if setting was not specified, then they were the default, which is to enable goody huts.

True for GHs, but usually the map designer manually removes them near the player start.

I'm going to start university the 1st of September, and I fear I'll be very busy then, but if that isn't the case, I'll sign up for the team again. Otherwise, I'll just be a lurker.

Dutch, i don't think yhou'll be so busy after the early days.
Anyway, if we are 8 in team we can easily afford some skip/swap.

I have been playing test games and thought we should start thinking about strategies and what victory conditions we should pursue. I realize we'll be changing threads once our new team thread is opened but this kind of a game seems to require more thought about what path to take than the last game.

Ideas to ponder:

Victory condition we should initially go for?
Where do we settle our capitol?
first build?
Test games to see what provides the highest wonder score. Do we prioritize from the start or grow quick and then catch up?

Some initial thoughts based on 4 tests

Building the Great Wall was possible after building a Worker and Settler. The GP generated has been a Great Spy. This gives us quite a good early espionage boost that can be used to steal techs. We have to have Alpha first to build spies to take advantage of this.

Elephants may be scarce on this map type.

We should be able to get a good tech lead, the only one to get a clear advantage was Ethiopia.

I was able to build the Oracle once but this was at the expense of expansion. I was able to build the Pyramids each time without Stone.

Food is plentiful around the start site, but happiness became an early concern. Hooking up Gold is an early priority, and should allow us Pop7.

My next test is going to be a military first try.

GB, itching to get started, eh? :) Those are good questions, and there are a couple more, but I think we should hold off on the strategy until the new thread opens... hopefully very soon. :please:

Yes, i think it's better wait for a new thread before discuss GB's questions.
I got some ideas, but i'd like to see yours.

For now we're 6:
greatbeyond
wastintime
balthalion
merum
sweetacshon
and me

still missing
sabre (i doubt he will join, pity)
dutchfire (hey, after the very early days you can play)
culdeus (maybe he's on holydays, his last activity on CFC was in august 18)

Yes especially since this thread is unrestricted ;)

You guys can always use private messages to discuss the game before your team thread opens. But if you post here people from the other teams can see what you are thinkning about.

After one week of university, I can say for sure that I won't have time to play. I've been busy all week, and I didn't even have the time to check my e-mail for several days. I will be able to lurk and post every now and then, but playing will be absolutely impossible.

Also, now would be the time to recruit unassigned players.

See, that's all part of a complicated strategy to have them see what i'm thinking, have them think; "Hey that sounds good/might work!" and then to their horror during the game when they try it, my thinking turns out to be something you should definitely not do if you want to win.

Hee Hee, hee, hee, heee, heeeee, heeeeeee........

Well, stay in the roster, you can tell us how bad our decisions are, and maybe play some if you get a chance. Uni study is all about balance and rhythm, you might find you'l have more time when you get it all sorted out. :)

:D Agreed. So it's build Great Wall, beeline internet, build internet, build Apollo, win, right?

Hey, i made a couple of invitations of people that seem good players.
I hope you approve.
Dutch can lurk and play if he can, but Sabre is surely lost and Culdeus doesn't appear, so we are 8, 9 if Dutch sign.
If Culdeus re-appears we can anyway have room for him.

Thanks for the invite.

I don't know about being a good player. I post a lot of HOF entries and get some high scores and early finish dates through attrition. If you play enough games, some are bound to be good.

I don't think I can mess up my 15 turn rotation too bad though.

I will contribute to the strategy discussion when the new thread opens. I have some ideas, but I am curious to hear what some of the other ideas are and come up with a good consensus before we start playing.

I'll introduce myself here as well, seeing as how Mesix already did it :)

I also want to thank Blubmuz for the invite.

I don't know about being a good player as I have my share of mistakes, but I do play well with others in SGs and will contribute where I can. And when you play with good players, you tend to (and hope that) their skills rub off on you some :p

But I do play with the team and will only with what the team has decided and not off somewhere in my own little world, so you don't have to worry too much about that at least.

If you need me for this one let me know. The concept is if nothing else intriguing. What defines a wonder point exactly?

I rarely build wonders so I'm not totally in tune to when even the BTS wonders come in to play. I build the GW sometimes and that tends to be the only one I ever build in BTS.

Welcome Mesix and berserks01!!! I look forward to getting into it. Anyone know when the new threads will open?

The base score is calculated by a mathematical formula taking into account your land area, population, technologies, and wonders. I believe wonders are worth 5 points each to your base score regardless of if they are world wonders or national wonders. The goal is to get the most wonder points factored in for finish time (so 10 wonders built and finishing by turn 120 is better than 11 wonders built and finishing by turn 200). Wonders have the same score value regardless of if you build them or capture them through conquest.

You can see the wonder points that are attributed to your base score by mousing over your player name in the lower right corner of the screen. As I understand it, the idea is that this number will be divided by the number of turns played to calculate each team's score (so if we achieve a wonder score of 70 and finish in 140 rurns, our team score would be 70/140=0.5).

If my explanation is off in some way, please correct me.

No, it's correct.
There was also a discussion about this in the SG8 sign-up thread.
Just remember that also Shrines and Corporations HQs are counted as wonders, not the projects, like Internet or Apollo.
