SGOTM 07 - Fifth Element

Good job guys!

I see in the Murky thread that we were 2nd to Alphabet, which was our early game goal, and 2nd to the Great Library, which was another one of our goals, 1st to Civil Service, 3rd (ex aequo) to Education, but late to Liberalism.

I think the war with Washington hurt us quite a bit, but for the rest of it, we played quite a good Space Race game.

We actually gave up a couple turns on alphabet to get an early academy. The goals were Academy and Civil Service. We were later on Education because we didn't waste a GS bulbing it. Same reason Liberalism was later. It gave us a stronger finish to have the GS settled. I wouldn't change a thing in hindsight. (except that war...I wonder how many others got an early unwanted war?)

Yes, we decided our strategy - or our VC - in the first TS, IIRC.
You got the chance to count tiles after writing (OB) and it takes a while to scout the land.
For that time we was already set for a SR, or at least we assumed it was too difficult to tech for a PA and in the meantime fight a continuos war. We was wrong.

The reason you can't see when we discover communism is because we never did it.
Liz has it, so we could sign our PA with her.

This said, your domination games are impressive.

Pity CRC can't read this, but with that tech pace they can beat us in a SR, probably.
We know well how diplomacy games work, especially being Jews.
But now i know why we loose that game: one of our members drank a generous portion of the milk his avatar used to drink, then he played his TS.

Edit:
Crossposted with WT: this post would answer to the members of the other teams which congratulated for our nice, but non-laurel victory.

I agree, given our strategy the only wrong thing was not build some unit, to avoid the war or to reduce the consequences.
Next time we must consider all the options, maybe playing some more test games.
I'm sure that after this WT can give an even better contribution to the team that he did for this one.

What, us? :shifty: Our biggest achivement was to get jesusin-the-peacemonger to DoW two AIs with only two warriors garrisoned in Murkyopolis
Ha! That will be a good read, I'm sure! ;)

Thanks for the kind words all. Win, lose, or draw, this was a blast. Special congrats to Murky for another incredibly successful game (and for sharing the wisdom so well -- Erkon, I envy your organizational skills!! ;)). Finally, thanks to the Admins for making it all possible.

.. (except that war...I wonder how many others got an early unwanted war?)

Hyanua Capac, Tokugawa, Alexander... oops, did you mean other teams? Isa DoWed us, but had not open borders to reach us :D

That's most kind! I'm actually one of the most un-organized people I can think of, but I have to contribute something at least, and I've given up on posting advice since my team mates have stopped listening to me :D

Ok, I must be stupid. I just spent 5 minutes looking for the initial 4000 BC save file and I still don't have it. Where is it?

Don't know where it is on the site, but here is my autosave from the end of turn 0 (4000 BC). Hope that will do. :D

EDIT: Looks like it actually puts you at the start of turn 1 though. :(

EDIT #2: Okay, found it. The second file is the original start.

- Go to the Progress and Results page.

- At the top of the graph select "List of Saves" in the "Display Format" drop down menu.

- Select 4000 BC in the "Start file list at" drop down menu.

- Click "Refresh"

- The first row of the table, below the headings and latest saves, then contains links to the start saves for the teams.

If this is too hard, use this link to get straight to the List of Saves, or use this link to download your team's starting save directly.

There may be some consolation in that we beat at least 5 teams on time, and look to have finished with the highest score. I haven't had a chance yet to read all Murky's posts but I feel very humbled. Do they have a gazillion lucky rabbit's feet? I am amazed that fomenting so many wars and unrest didn't backfire on them.

Already looking forward to the next game. Any guesses if it will be back to Warlords or perhaps BTS?

If they have stopped listening to you, you could change teams and we promise to listen!

Thanks, wow, that's complicated. I figured it would be in the first post of the maintenance thread or an obvious link on the progress/results page. I guess you don't want people just passing by, checkin out SG7 to find the start. Might cause a side game or get too much info leaked.

I would imagine with the new patch the next SGOTM will be in BTS. I haven't put the patch in yet, but from what I see it looks really good.

Luck? What luck? It was all skill! :D Seriously though, we got a bit of luck catching hindu which was the religion of Liz GW and Asoka. So it was easier to keep them pleased. Then all we had to do was make sure everybody who was a threat was either pleased/friendly or busy with a war we started. The only way it could have backfired is if one of our neighbors dogpiled, but at pleased they wouldn't do that.

Please also note that
- many people wouldn't have declared hindu when our PA chosen AI, KK, was budist
- it did backfire: all Asoka, JC and Lizz took cities that rightfully belonged to KK

I think we were unlucky in that Asoka and GW had the same religion :crazyeye:. Else we could have chosen Asoka as partner, got rid of GW and the pressure on our borders, and more important: we could have fought the war from north to south. This scenario would easily have shaved away more than 10 turns given a similar development elsewhere. But it's of course hypothetic reasoning

Hey, culdeus, I wonder why you asked us if the continent was big enough for domination.
Couldn't you count the tiles? Didn't you have full vision of the continent?

I am amazed that fomenting so many wars and unrest didn't backfire on them.
I see it just the opposite. ;) I'm amazed that anyone that wasn't fomenting wars didn't get clobbered by the AIs. Fomenting wars is the safest way to prevent the wrong deity AIs from DoWing you, isn't it?

:) ... and evacuate both warriors out of the city that very same turnset too!

I suppose he was lazy :p
