SGOTM 08 - Chokonuts

Don't worry - this team has seen it's fair share of "accidents" so don't worry about it. We've already licked the wooden spoon before!

We've just been trying to get better about communicating what we are going to do in the turnset and making sure we stop if it's a fairly important decision. One thing we are really trying to get better about is discussing early game strategy like city placement, tech choice, things like that.

Shaka is an interesting neighbour to say the least. He won't build us any wonders but will probably try and kill us at some stage if we don't kill him first. He is also a mad rex-er, so we'll need to exoand his direction first (unless we discover some great sites in our south.

In any case I withdraw our scout to the south to do some scouting.

Animal Husbandry comes in and is replaced by Fishing.

We have but one way to go over land, towards Shaka.

Hinduism is founded 3320BC. Good we didn't try and chase a religion.

I only play 9 as that is when Fishing comes in. I think we should go for Bronze Working next but best to get some consensus in the group for the sake of 1 turn.

We have an interesting build dilema in Yasodharapura (can we rename this Chokonut Central please :)).

We originally planned to start a work boat after Fishing came in but with the cows online, the warrior is 3 turns, as is growth to size 2. We could go for a settler before work boat at size 2 and get a second city up quickly, working the cows and gold and maye a chop or two. If there is copper we an grab it quickly and start some axes for Shaka.

What do we think (on builds and research)?

You should wait until some of the later ones!!!

I get feeling BW will be too late to warrant a chop for the settler, maybe more feasible to whip it asap. I think Settler is needed sooner rather than later. If we dont then we could be easily boxed in and then up the preverbial without a paddle. I dont fancy our chances of finding much Bronze with all the trees around.

agre
research-> bw
build -> warrior
then maybe build a wb till we can chop a settler and finish wb

Correction, I can play right now if i get the go ahead on the plan.

Ok I picked up the save but won't do anything till I get a confirm on plan.

ok going ahead

Hey guys how do i embed a screen shot with my text the way ozbenno did in the post above.

First I sent the scout a wee bit to the south west where he discovered fish and what turns out to be a choke point. He then headed to remove fog in the North West. Unfortunately, before he could complete his task he was killed by a panther even though he was in jungle. I don't think I have had that happen to me on the very first animal attack before, especially a panther.

Build wise i went warrior, wb, then settler. Growth to size three occured exactly same time as wb completes and the turn before BW is discovered.

Worker moves were mine gold, mine grass hill and then move to riverside grass to chop exactly in time for bw to be discovered.

Food+hammers is 10 hammers for a settler i.e settler in 10.
A chop i believe is 20 hammers and a whip is 30 so if we revolt and do both we can get a settler in 6 (i can't remember how many worker turns for a chop) but i think that's about how long it will take. We will have overflow of about 11 hammers for next build. One of the turns for the settler is complete.

I played till BW was discovered so we can decide next tech. Worker still hasn't moved to chop site but has completed mine.
See third pic to see the research options and if you take a peak at the grassland hill all mined and ready to go you'll get a pleasant surprise.

I think wheel next for obvious reasons and should complete just before the chop completes for the settler giving the worker something to do.

Where to put the settler? do we block the choke right away and give ourselves some space?

Also I didn't revolt yet.

Great news on the copper - look out Shaka, here we come!

I definitely agree that we need wheel next, then I'm not sure which direction I would be in favor of - try to grab Oracle?

For the second city, what about the tile 1W of the lake to the west? It would grab the rice, cows, and elephants. It would also be closer to Shaka, but not too far away to hurt the economy.

Yeah one west of lake looks good.
One expansion from creative sury will block out shaka.
Also till IW wont' be able to work any jungle.
Can we camp elephants without IW. I forget now but are they in jungle?
It would be nice to be able to go to size three withou IW.

If we put overflow hammers from settler build which may be 11 or 21 I didn't calculate exactly into a worker we'll get them boosted by the expanisve trait and might be worthwile to build a worker right after the settler or to keep directing overflow to the worker till it is complete allowing us to grow.

edit: the more i think about it i don't like the idea of whipping the third pop. Would rather whip at four and and grow back quickly and work the copper mine.

Techwise I think we should get on the Oracle road, the worker still has some hills to chop and mine to keep him occupied for now. I agree we should get second settler out and look to block Shaka in. If possible we should try to get a couple of axes out before Oracle to try and stifle Shaka before we are in a position to take him out completely

Trying to interpret other team power and culture graphs.
Looks like a second city was founded 2400 BC by unusual suspects.
Power graph at same stage as us is identical for all but trash team.
I think they must have built two warriors and have yet to complete BW.
Whereas everyone else is one warrior and BW by 2800 bc.
Just speculating.

On oracle it would be a big boost if we can get it.
