SGOTM 08 - XTeam

The above analysis suggests that capturing the woker has more upside than downside. I'm then inclined to use the warrior to check out Zulu territory and send our scout west, but what we reveal of the map in the next two turns might suggest a change in those intentions.

Couple of thoughts:
1. If Shaka is on coast with food and has researched Fishing, how likely is it that he'll research sailing, produce a galley, and threaten our seafood before we're ready to build one of our own?
2. Can we get copper connected and an axe chopped a bit sooner and still get to Oracle on schedule? I'd certainly sacrifice a pre-Math forest, or even two, for this.
There is no need to chop axe, we can build one in the capital that needs to grow after library. So workboat and library there and an axe, only library first before the other two, and certainly a settler prelibrary.

Okay, that sounds like the way to go. Won't we want to chop an extra forest or two in producing the library and settler? Any sense of when Shaka might send a galley our way?

I modified the save to reflect rrau's turnset, and will post below.

Suprisingly, I can still get Oracle on the same turn as before (IBT69/70) and GLH too (IBT74/75). I suggest we work clams instead of gold for the next three turns while we chop the forest the middle worker is currently on, and the one due south of it. Settler is finished on turn 41 and settles same turn.

CP's idea of chopping an axeman is viable. If we chop it in PH City, it gets to Shaka's horses by turn 58. Oracle can be built with 2 chops because PH City at Pop3 gets 10 hammers per turn. That leaves 5 forests for capital to chop lighthouse and GLH.

The extra gold from the hut gives us enough to run at 100% research through Oracle while building pig city on turn 67.

If stolen worker tries to make it home unescorted, there is a way to expose him to danger on 1 turn only. If warrior scouts toward Shaka's cows, he can fogbust a danger tile for the worker.

CP's idea of chopping an axeman is viable. If we chop it in PH City, it gets to Shaka's horses by turn 58. That's almost 20 turns from now and, I think(?), 8 turns after the horses come within Shaka's culture. Wouldn't getting there a couple of turns sooner be worth some tweaking?Oracle can be built with 2 chops because PH City at Pop3 gets 10 hammers per turn. That's not much risk, but what are we gaining for taking it? Isn't roading towards our land a worthwhile and safer activity?

Some nice testing there SCT! :goodjob: The info about Shaka's behaviour variations in different locations is very useful. Is the later than expected BW an indication that he did indeed go fishing first and therefore he's one the coast? Or do we actually need to eyball it?

I like the idea of taking the worker - I think that extra roads immediately is at least a big help, and later not having to build the worker is a help, and right now, slowing Shaka's development is a bonus too.

I also like the fact that the Oracle still comes about the T70 mark and the GLH shortly afterwards. :)

Edit: Looks like CRC and OSS have joined the Oracle club

CP, do you have some time?

I don't think I'll have enough time to play Monday or Tuesday (though I should be able to look at the save and participate in the discussion), but I could probably (if nothing unexpected comes up) post a plan Wed and play Thurs, if that would work out. Actually, this time of year, next week is as good a time as any for me.

This all seems fine to me. I think we still have some things to work on and decide. Especially in the short term, the Worker steal.

If we steal the Worker, then I think we can probably go ahead and play through, and should test for, the next ten turns. Should we decide not to steal the Worker, then I think we need to get an Open Borders agreement, recon Shaka's territory, stop and make maps and test his behavior so we can decide when would be best to strike and how we can maximize our opportunities with Shaka. :mischief:

In addition, we really should spend some time looking ahead to decide what our goals should be. As Fred has reminded us several times, we need to have a look at the short game versus the long one. Until we have a good feel for what is going to happen with Shaka, this is, admittedly, a bit difficult.

In our last game, I think we did very well on the turn set by turn set play. What we didn't do quite as well was weaving those sets into an overall strategy that would meet our end goal; in that game, domination.

What do we need to know to help us determine what a plausible victory goal might be for this game and how can we test that? How can we use Fred's work to help us figure out when the best date for victory would be and verify that?

Sorry, just do not want to lose sight of the overall game for the many decisions we need to make to MM our way through this and other turn sets. :)

The worker could help the axeman get to the horses a couple turns sooner. Although there aren't many tiles the stolen worker could road without facing some barb danger.

Except for getting the initial axeman to the horses more quickly, there isn't much reason to build roads now. The main force wont be ready to roll until ~T85. And our other workers wont have much to do after turn 75. Sending the worker back to our territory immediately would speed up Pop2 (and Pop3, Pop4, etc) by one turn in PH city.

Okay, perhaps that's worth the risk. I'm trying to look at the save and your test game, but the new Bts patch has been installing for over 45 minutes now. Is that to be expected?

Are you installing it by doing it in game or did you download the save and double click the file to install it? There has been a problem with doing it in game, in other words, from the menu at the start of the game.

Unless you are on a very slow connection to the internet (dial-up), 45 minutes is too long.

I'm trying to do it through ADVANCED>UPDATES. Is that what you mean by "in game?" Where else can I go to get the patch and where should I save it to before double clicking to install?

Here is the link to CivFanatics download center for the upgrade file for :bts: version 3.17. Because the file is so large, they have linked to a file sharing service. Please find the name FileFront and click on it. That will take you to the FileFront download site for Civ4 BtS ver 3.17 patch. Click the Download Now button and it will ask where you want to save it. It is probably easiest to save it to your desktop.

Now you can go to your desktop and double-click the file name to install it. I chose this service because you will get the file as an .exe file. The others give it to you as a .zip.

My only concern is that doing it in game may have damaged your install. So it may be best not to delete the download file until you know civ 4 :bts: is functioning properly.

Good luck. I'll hang out a little longer to help if you need it.

Thanks, leif -- especially for the offer to hang out, but it's bed time. I'll have a go at it tomorrow once RL demands are met.
You're welcome. Time for some

I had the same trouble installing the new patch last month as well. I tried to update in-game, but nothing happened. So I downloaded the patch from the link on CFC, and it worked.

Did the attempt to update in-game have any negative effects on your install of Civ4? If not, then CP should be fine by downloading and installing from the .exe file. :)

No, and I think it's because the attempt at the in-game update got stuck at the download phase. I don't think any executable ever started running, IIRC.

Let's hope the same for CP. Although the download should overwrite anything that may have been written... :please:

So, are we stealing a Worker? :mischief:
Looks like it to me? :)
