SGOTM 09 - Team CFR

A possible way of dealing with the barbs in Atlantis could be building a stack of triremes and using blockade to starve the citizens (Lexad's idea)
That was Bemep's idea, I tested it and found it would totally work if our first stack is not destroyed by barb promoted galleys. We also can get from Sparta via 2 forts, but there are plenty of arguments against it, including not going to research MC for long or wasting worker turns on forts.

Now we think it'd be better to settle GS in the capital rather than rush Edu - it will not delay Oxford, but provide more bulbs in the future.

A new test - more Phalanxes, 5th city goes to non-shore location south, 6th - shore with cows west form Atlantis

Another minisession went not-100%-to plan: first (damn hotkeys) I ordered worker to connect resources, when the game window turned active while I was typing in chat. Then barb galley gathered its guts and jumped towards our very odd fish (gone now). Thus one worker went chopping for galley in Sparta (traded Sailing and Poly for Maths from Hammurabi, as intended). Stopped to assess situation and reorder workers around.

Balloon scouted Greenland, glimpsing Iceland and other stuff, uncovered coast towards Joao - who seem to have no visible coastal city (will find out next turn).

Test fila attached.

:( At least we know whom to blame. ;) We had some bad luck because the barb galley was apparently spawned randomly and won't affect the other teams. But it is not a disaster though, the land in Greenland looks good enough for one or two cities, so we'll need the galley anyway to ferry settlers. The net loss is 20 hammers to rebuild the fish net and several turns lost not working the fish tile. Just cross our fingers that the barb galley won't win the battle at 14% odds after airship bombardment.

Joao has 3 cities now, and we don't know the location of the third one.

End of my session (turns 57-60)
Balloon returned back and bombed bar galley which suicided iteself on our galley at 12.6% prob - fish restored in 2 turns (1 for logisics). Failed to uncover Babylon due to woods, will scout closer Hammy city he built at corn-sheep site.
Trade with 1 Joao city - waiting for him to connect it to the rest of his.

2 barb axes bombed by Hammurabi's balloons attacked Corinth defended by 2 phalanxes IBT turns 60-61. One own at 2.2% odds, with 0.1 health left. Should finish him with our phalanx.

Thebes founded south from Iron.

Techs: CoL, Confu founded in Sparta, missionary spread in Athens. Started CS.

Most of the session's issues was worker micro.

It looks like we have a river in GreenLand...

Test save as the result of my turns. Sorry, did not have time to enter far terrain.

I will be away till evening 03.05.2009. Bemep is the next, make the plan, please. :)
It looks like we should go to the Oxford in any case with enough protection against Barbs. And on this way we will decide what we chose next: war against Babylon or peacefull expantion.

I offer to test way to Oxford with 5-th city on Greenland 5E2N from Athens, 6-th city on south between Cow, Rice and Wine where we placed 5-th city by previous plan. This placement will sighnifically decrease Barbs oppression and we couldn't build additional defence for a long time. Also mabe better to build Settler for 6th city in Athens in the same turn with CS (4 turns). My calculations show Education in 80BC (forced by GS), 6 Universities in 120AD and Oxford in 290AD. But most of cities should use Slavery (revolt to Bureau and Slavery in 400BC) and chop 6-8 forests.
May be it's too hard rush...

Yes, that is a great thread about barbarians. Wish I had read earlier. :(

There is also a post on barb galley movement there by DanF5771:

DanF5771 said:
flip a coin (50% chance) and -if lucky- check whether an improvement can be pillaged this turn (AI_pillageRange(iRange=1))
--> they will move onto Fishing Boats in adjacent tiles and pillage them
.
check whether an enemy unit can be attacked on this or on the next turn (AI_anyAttack(iRange=2, iOddsThreshold=25))
--> they will target your Work Boats 4 tiles away; this can be exploited to keep them away from your improvements by some nice disco-fox dancing or to lure them into the fishing grounds of your neighbors
.
check whether an improvement can be pillaged within 4 turns ((AI_pillageRange(iRange=4))
--> they will use their advanced AI radar to spot your improvements 7 tiles away , however, this radar can only detect improvements in the fog, if they exist for more than 20 turns (improved knowledge!, 5 turns for land units and improvements on land); the closest improvement "wins" (max(pillageValue/pathTurns))
.
AI_heal()
.
AI_patrol()
--> move into a random adjacent tile (iValue = 1...10,000); prefer unowned tiles (+20,000) and tiles not adjacent to borders (+10,000); if movement points left, recalculate ALL options (if the patrol-move reveals a "fresh" improvement, that was hidden from the AI radar in the fog before, option 3 will now be enabled and the respective mission (AI_pillageRange(iRange=4)) will be pushed)

So our analysis of barb galley movement was mostly correct. What we missed is that the improvements are revealed to barbs after 20 turns (which must be hidden somewhere else in the code).

We made some calculations about the method of using next GS: bulb Education (1) or settle it as Specialist in Athens (2).
1) Education in 80BC, Universities in 80AD, Oxford in 290AD;
2) Education in 80AD, Universities in 200AD, Oxford in 380AD;

At 380AD:
1) has about 800 bulbs more, 200 gold less then 2);
1) has 40(50) bulbs per turn less then 2);
1) has 7 pops less then 2) (Granaries later).

Then science output difference between 1) and 2) will decrease, but population of 1) still less then 2)

1) will discover Biology in 800AD, 2) - in 830AD but 2) still has more population and bulbs per turn and they will be equal in 20 turns after that, then 2) will be a little bit better, but the difference will be less then 1 turn.

But 2) is more safe because we will have stronger cities and can easier force expansion or war if we will need.

We still don't know, what is better: war with Hammi for cities and territory or peacfull development. Peace way will have faster science in the middle of game, but slower at the end. We also should have in mind Coal and Aluminium... But we still have time for decision...

Plan till Civil Service:
61: Phalanx kills Barb Axe. Airship reveal Babylon and nearest city - fly 5W1N from Corinth. Galley go back, Phalanx from Athens go to Galley, Athens build Welth, take 1 FP from Corinth. Worker NW from Athens go S. Worker from Uranium finishes Road S from Thebes. Sparta set 2 Scientists. Worker S from Thebes go to Wheat and starts Farm. Worker W from Thebes go to Cow and starts Pasture. Southern Phalanx go SE. Scout go NW.
62: Corinth finishes Settler, starts Welth, Settler go to Athens. Sparta finishes Worker, starts Welth. Phalanx from Athens got to Galley, Galley go N,NW and loads Worker from Sparta. Worker W from Athens starts FP. Athens starts Settler. Worker S from Thebes go SE and starts Road. Second Phalanx go south. Phalanx near Corinth go to Corinth for healing, then go to south by road. Scout go NE and fortifies.
63: Galley unloads Worker on west tile of Greenland, go back and load Settler. Airship search west. Pasture near Thebes is ready, switch city.
64: Galley go SE, E and unloads Settler and Palanx NW from Sheep. Worker in Greenland go W from Sheep. FP on W from Sparta is ready, reset citisens in Sparta, Athens and Corinth for using commers Forests. Worker on Pasture near Thebes starts Road, Farm on Wheat is ready. Set Science to 90%.
65: Discover Civil Service, revolt to Bureaucracy and Slavery, starts Paper. Athens finishes Settler, starts Welth. Settler go south. Galley W,NW. Worker W from Sparta go to Galley Settler founds Argos. Worker in Greenland starts Pasture on Sheep.
