SGOTM 10 Maintenance Thread

It's not like I am revealing anything that anyone can do anything about. Or that they won't find out on their own very soon. I have other suspicions about barbs which I will keep to myself and my teammates.

This is completely different, though. and an open discussion should be held about it. Teams that haven't discovered yet should be consulted as well. I doubt you'll find even a single player in favour of it.

Abegweit, I think I have some definite ideas, what you are talking about, but I think you should accept the ruling of the moderator.

Write a PM, what youre problem is, stating clearly that you think this feature should be revealed to all and discussed here because of possible game breaking effects. This is much better than throwing around bits of veiled information, which might or might not be used by other teams.

What do you do think that other teams could do with this knowledge? Get out their prayer shawls? This needs open discussion.

This could have been a good idea in the mid-ME. Not at the beginning of the game.

I appreciate Gyathaar setting up this game for us. Still, this was a bad idea. No one is perfect.

...well... I'm not sure if we've seen the 'sword of Damocles' yet... but here's my $0.02:
  • @Gythaar: :salute:
  • Game on! :hammer:

For what it's worth, I agree with AVN and will enjoy the surprises at hand. The game is on Emperor level, which I believe means a plausible victory for everyone around here - with or without a huge Barb nation thingy.

Game on! :hammer:

For those that have been wondering.. Barbarian Guards does not have lethal bombard.. they can just redline units

I came back to civ3 again, and what I see - new SGOTM was started :)
Was signup already closed, or I can join now? I played in many SG's with people from "Reigning Cats and Dogs", so, if it's possible, I would like to join that team.

You'd better PM them - Beorn-eL-Feared is looking after their roster, I think. If they are happy to add you then you're in, as long as you haven't lurked on any other team thread.

:salute:
Welcome on board, Smart; if we put you at the end and follow normal roster order, you're up.

I've opened the first spoiler thread. To save you having to look at the first post I've included below the conditions you need to meet:

1st spoiler thread said:
You may READ this thread when your land units can reach Barbarian cities.

You may POST in this thread when a nominated scribe from your team has posted a Spoiler describing your progress up to the defined point. Your team summary should include your early decisions on city placement, research, units and improvements, and the milestones in the development of your economy, contacts and diplomatic relationships.

When posting, please do not discuss future events beyond the date you met the spoiler condition. And remember that your viewing public will be looking out for literary flair, historical accuracy, humour, and strategic insight.

So let's hear how you are doing. What government have you selected for your assault on the Barbarian Stronghold? How have the Barbarians made themselves felt in your game so far? How many of your AI rivals are left to help you in your quest?

All teams have now posted a 1000 BC save, so I've run the QSC stats and you can see the data here.

Please note that overall QSC score is a poor indicator of final performance in GOTMs, so it's even less likely to tell you how you'll fare in a customized SGOTM with variant rules. The main points of interest are the differences in early strategy between the teams. You may want to discuss these variations in the spoiler thread ... when and if you get there.

I have made a small amendment to the first spoiler condition. Its first sentence now reads:

"You may READ this thread when your land units can reach cities built by the Barbarian nation."

And its title has been adjusted to match.

@AlanH: I don't know if this matters... but the progress page seems to be showing the Score graph instead of the Territory graph... did a snippet of code in the page get misplaced somewhere along the way?

Thanks. Fixed! Too much cross breeding between Civ3 and Civ4 :p

Here's a pic of my diplomacy screen as of 110AD. See anything wrong with it AlanH?

*edit*
put the correct date up

Well, the first issue is that it's a spoiler for anyone who may not have met everyone yet, so I've downlaoded the image and removed the link. The second issue is that I'm not in the business of playing guessing games. If you have a problem with the game I suggest you contact me via PM and explain it.

Just for the record, I did see the image, and while I considered it out of place in this thread (can't spell the inaprobatey word) since it dealt with a gameplay issue, it did not make any sense to me.

I saw it, but I don't understand it. And don't plan to discuss it with my team.

I think this was just a clarification needed of the way the F4 screen displays info. The image would only be a spoiler for teams unaware of the civs in the game, which is unlikely at this stage in the competition. However, the principle remains - please don't post specific information relating to your game progress in this thread.

Gyathaar and/or I can be reached as fast, or faster, via PM, with no risk of divulging spoiler information. I get copies of PMs via email so I don't even need to connect to the forums to see them.

@AlanH: I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'm asking just as a double-check. Is it necessary to defeat the Barbarians before "winning" the game? i.e., do we need to stay under the domination limit? Or is "winning the game" completely irrelevant?

On a completely unrelated note...

@Gyathaar: First of all, another set of compliments to you. XTeam is literally and figuratively having a blast in this game. :D My question to you: As this SGOTM matures, and say... half the teams have reached endgame... do you have any plans to post a spoiler somewhere that details how this game was put together, and how the barbarians were set up? I think it might be quite entertaining.

Sounds like a good idea, I like it, but...
Are we ready to be exposed to the twisted inner workings of Gyathaar's mind? :D
