SGOTM 10 - Maple Sporks

Wanted to post this (a letter I got):

I'd post in your thread, but then other teams would know...

We finished the same exact time, both our teams. Kudos...Solidly middle of the pack. We only had 3 team members , so that stunk.

Here's an idea. 1, you can post in your thread what I am telling you, but I dont wanna post to give away that we both are done.

If you go to your control panel, you can change your options so that you are hidden as active or viewable. Then other teams will not know you are browsing their threads.

Cheers.

Congratulations Maple Sporks on a very respectable effort your first time out! Hope to see you in the next one too.

:goodjob:

Thanks, kcd!

Well, I've been following the conclusion of several of the other games and it seems in the end we just beat 4 teams (not counting the russians...). Amazingly it seems we're only among few teams that managed to get the St Petersbug site, by many the same spot is referred to as "Bombay". :) Some praise begot us for that, although of course we lamentably lost it.

Actually, I think Maple Sporks also took the central site ... but lost it to a Gandhi counterattack later (hence the surprising dip in their score in the midgame). Can't find the link right now.

Look at Maple Sporks' game. Those guys deserve an award for high battle spirtit. They settled bombay alike spot as Leningrad ( =p ) but but lost it to Gandhi declaration (They could have saved it, though... bad handling of war but managed in the end).
A high battle spirit indeed! And give us that award! :D (@bestsss if you're reading this, what do you mean by bad handling of the war? The one were we lost St Pete, or the later game conquest of the rest of the world? I agree that either could've gone better...)

Anyway, in retrospect and looking over other games I still think we did pretty decent, but probably we played it way too much as if it were a regular SG instead of a SGOTM where every turn counts. Our research went way deeper than necessary, MW managed to conquer the world with galleons and knights... We played it very save counting on tanks and an oil-based navy. Good for a SG, maybe not for SGOTM! Well, we were newbs to the format. :p

Also apart from a short emergency spell we didn't use slavery at all. I think that cost us a truckload of turns in the end. We did rushbuy some nukes, but whipping would timing wise probably have been much more effective. Also we didn't really consider going for communism and the Kremlin. Okay, we did prioritize capturing the Kremlin for our rushbuying efforts, but then the dice were cast already. Of the 60 or 70 nukes we built I think we built them all but give or take 10 in the old fashioned way. So probably slavery would have speeded up things a lot, I guess we were just too blinded by our marvelous NE/NP capital with its 20 odd hired specialists and hence didn't want to move out of caste. The extra hammer from all the workshops of course counted as well, but again, slavery would probably have brought much more hammers, also as we were feeding our empire on Sushi (few teams went for that).

Maybe, maybe, maybe had we not lost St Pete (we saw that coming too late) and had we been whipping our empire to the ground we might have been close to the bronze medal... But of course most teams with knowledge in hindsight might have done better. :) However, Murky Waters and Xteam seem to have been in a class of their own, both amazing games, along which all the rest seem to pale in comparison. :goodjob:

At least we gain a gold medal for highest culture! :D Although by the same token Chokonuts get the gold medal for highest score and Geezers for biggest power and we can't say that any of us were close to the real medals... :mischief::lol: Well, you got to look for a consolation prize where there isn't any...

>>@bestsss if you're reading this, what do you mean by bad handling of the war.

You could have saved St. Petersburg quite easily from Gandhi menace, trade for nationalism, start golden age (you had spare GE), whip wall (slows bombard and buys you time)/draft, and smack Gandhi, you get great general for HE as a side bonus, you could even whip later in the HE w/ Kremlin or Sushi.
Should not have burned the catapults on his stack since the stack heals while he bombards the defenses.
I took the save just to try I could win the war

Since he would have had no army, heal a bit and pillage his land kill some more and sue for peace (hopefully getting some tech)

I think we didn't even discuss firing off a GA, IIRC I wasn't even aware off the possibility. We already had had a GA before for an emergency when a barbarian raiding party landed next to one of our cities and we had to do some emergency whipping.
Here, apart from the GE, we had a GM which was about to do a first(?) trade mission in London, that would've been the second great person to be burnt for the GA you propose. Well, in retrospect if it would have saved St Pete that would've been better of course. As it was, we did do the trade for nationalism but took a turn of anarchy which probably was crucial. There was some discussion about whipping the wall but it was discarded, probably for the wrong reasons... And burning those catapults was indeed not a good idea either probably, speaking for myself I'm not very used to using them on defence! :) Anyway, I wrongly thought we'd hold St Pete in any case. Well, a good learning moment let's say. Thanks for looking at it!

Hi guys. I have all of 5 minutes today to check on how you did. kind of ironic that its the last day for submissions. I will try to go back and read from when I had to exit but it looks as it wasn't a bad overall first effort for the Sporkians! Congrats!

I checked again: it's possible to save the city w/o golden age (but if you want to turn back to caste. it's 2 lost turns which is too much) as long as you build walls immediately (it's possible). This slows down Gandhi and then you have time to switch to draft/whip mode and wait for him to suicide his stack.
Overall walls/castles in medieval wars are very important since the AIs will bomb them down and you can regroup.

Hi Maple Sporks, are you guys planning on playing again? I liked your playing style, and would like to participate in the next SGOTM11. I have experience in SGOTM 8 & 9 in team Wonder Bumpkins.

Hey DwarfSleepy, I just sent a pm to the team to gauge interest in SGOTM11. Personally I would be... For me you could join the team, no problem! First we'll have to see though about everyone's interest and availability for this next SGOTM.

I'm interested as well and have no objections to you joining the team DwarfSleepy (on the contrary, the more the merrier).

That makes 4, plus Whosit is 5 (he said something about an advisory role in a pm but we'll make him play :D). Let's see if sturick is still around...

Thanks for having me :-)

I could try and twist the arm of someone from the previous SGOTM Wonder Bumpkins' team who I also know in RL to join us, so we have more critical mass. In my experience the amount of people actively participating goes down as the game progresses, so no harm in starting with a full team.

Hello again fellow Sporks!

I am definitely interested in getting back into an SG after a bit of hiatus.
But I will put my restrictions out to the group for a vote...I just want to make sure the unfortunate limitations on my time aren't a nuisance or hindrance to the group.

My new job allows me no access to the internet...BOOO!!!!
So my participation will be regular but not as regular as I might like.
I only have time to play my sets on Saturdays and maybe Sundays...so patience or skips/swaps will likely be in order.
I have vacation planned for the first week in June.

If anyone has issue with this then I'm fine with stepping aside for a more active participant.
The good of the many is greater than the good of the one...:D
I'd like to think that my semi-active participation will help the group more than it would hurt it!
But no hard feelings either way...honest.

I don't have a problem with you only playing in the weekends sturick, so I'd say welcome back :goodjob:

Delighted to have all Sporks back together, so please do participate sturick! I don't have any problem with an externally forced lower posting frequency as long as the commitment is there! And I'm sure you'll have that! :)
(On a sidenote: I only have a problem with that horrible signature of yours... :mischief: Didn't see the corresponding movie so don't quite get the context of the quote. Without the context I'm only remided of rather awful illnesses when seeing a post of yours, although the posts themselves are always well thought-out and educated and all that. :))

Don't forget to post in the sign-up thread! That also applies to Whosit.

So that makes us 6, though maybe not all at "full power". So I'm fine with DwarfSleepy's suggestion of getting his friend in (as long as he's about monarch/emperor level :)), although I think we can also perfectly well manage with 6.

Hello Sporks,

I am said friend of DwarfSleepy. He brought the new SGOTM to my attention, and indeed it is time that I come out of my early retirement to participate in another round :) I have played for the Wonder Bumpkins with DwarfSleepy for a couple of SGOTM's.

I comfortably play at monarch, but I still find emperor to present me with some challenge as I play the single player games. I have been reading through some of your team thread, and I believe that my style of playing SGOTM's matches with the Sporks. Therefor I would like to offer my services as a player to the team.

Hi Iagoc! I'd take your services, if the rest of the team agrees... I'm sure they will, though. :)

I suppose a team of 7 is still okay with the staff?

Glad to see the gang is all here plus a few new teammates. I'm putting in my vote for nocho as captain of our ship.
Say what?? :D

I'm putting in my vote for Norvin_Green as captain of our ship! You got us into this whole SGOTM mess in the first place... And I doubt we really need a captain. On the other hand, it seems I'll have most time on my hands for checking the site (not for actually playing though) so if you need someone to keep track of the roster and keep the thread alive, then I can do that for you. :)
