Preliminary Plan to start discussion:

Research:
Bulb Astronomy with the Great Scientist in St. Pete and continue researching until it is completed. I estimate that to be 3 more turns.
With the next GS due in 6 turns, 3 additional turns after the discovery of Astronomy, begin research of Biology. In order to maximize the use of GS's my suggestion is to do do a minimum of self research of Biology. Thus I suggest that we do 4 turns of research of Physics after Astronomy and then perhaps 1 turn of researching Biology (All turns at 60%). Then turn down slider to 0% for a while
Are two GS’s sufficient to complete Physics? If so, we should continue self-research of Biology until the next GS is born and we get a free GS from Physics, which may complete Biology? Given our current beaker production, I estimate Biology would require 31 turns to complete by self-research.
Do we plan on two GS’s for Biology or one with self-research? If it is two, then we could put some beakers into Electricity or Steam Power while we wait for GS’s to be born? Steel would be a safe place to put some beakers.

Civics:
Is it worth changing civics to Free Market? We would lose our free Engineers but gain commerce from trade routes for beakers and our economy. No big advantage from FM since all AI except Gandhi has adopted Mercantilism

Cities:
Moscow - change production from Wealth to Xbow. Once Xbow complete, back to Wealth. Remember to MM otherwise we can't get the xbow in 2 turns

St. Pete – continue building Wealth until Biology is researched, then National Park.

All other cities, continue to build Wealth.

Worker actions:
Workers continue to build Windmills, Watermills and Workshops unless there is a resource they can gain.
In the St. Pete area, we can begin building Forest Preserves, the tiles with Lumbermills get converted last.

Unit Orders:
Trireme north to face Barb Galley.
Keep Workboats and Galley with Workers and Missionary headed north to Vladivostok. Let galley stay put for one turn so that it can help killing the barb galley in case it defeats our trireme. And move the knight to the hill outside Moscow to prevent barbs from landing units there.

Trades.
Trade Economics around to civs for Gold and goodwill, starting with Gandhi. Do we gift Economics to Mao for brownie points? No trading for free with Mao. Maybe we should even wait a turn or two before we trade hoping that the AI will have more gold available?
Watch for Nationalism to become available.
What techs do we want to hold onto and not trade?

Cancel OB with Gandhi to keep his galley trapped until we can kill it with a Privateer.

OK, thanks Fred, and everyone else too. :)

My plan is to play through the discovery of Astronomy for this evening. I should be able to start in about 4 or 5 hours from now.

Sorry, got home later than expected. Decided it would be best to postpone until tomorrow after some sleep.

Never a good idea start when I'm half asleep...

And the answer is: Two Longbows got off the Barb Galley.

We have two units to promote, our Trireme and our Knight.

Here is the log thus far:
Turn 93 – 1720 AD
Cancel Open Borders with Gandhi.
Change build in Moscow to Xbow and MM for 2-turns.
Move Fishing Boats towards Vlad., Galleys towards home and hold the Galley near Moscow.
Send Trireme north.
Bulb Astronomy.
MM Novgorod, St. Pete and Horse City for Hammers for wealth. We can now have Astronomy in three turns at 60% research without breaking the bank. That should allow a bit of time for AI to accumulate a bit more Gold before we trade Economics to them.

IBT
The Barb Galley drops off two Longbows near Moscow.

Turn 94 – 1722 AD
De Gaulle’s gold jumps to 130, time for a trade?
Not sure what to do about attacking the Barbs. Don’t want to let LB’s start pillaging improvements. Decide to attack with the Knight at 90.67%. Kill the first LB, Knight is at 0.4/10  but can be promoted next turn. Xbow due on the IBT.
Decide not to attack the Barb Galley as we should soon have Privateers. The Trireme’s odds are 88.79.
Trades:
Trade Printing Press to De Gaulle for 130 Gold and his World Map. De Gaulle becomes Pleased with us.
Trade Economics to Gandhi for 50 Gold and WM. He becomes Cautious towards us. J
Trade Economics to Mao for 60 Gold and WM. He becomes Pleased towards us. Then we trade Fish to Mao for 2 GPT.
Turn research up to 70%, Astronomy due next turn.

IBT
Barb Galley attacks our Trireme and dies.
Barb LB moves onto our desert hill windmill near Moscow.
We discover Astronomy and start research on Physics.
A Crossbow is produced in Moscow, start a Privateer.

Turn 95 – 1724 AD
Save game and posted for comments.

I have not moved anything in the current turn, just saved and posted.

Definitely time for more navy ASAP if the barb are landing units. One ship is a real cheap way of getting rid of a galley and two longbows in one easy go.

Haven't had a chance to look at the save yet. Later...

Wouldn't be wise to atack that lb on the hill, so we're going to have to lose our windmill for a few turns. Suggest we wait for lb to pillage and then move off the hill before attacking him (immediately, if he is on a tile he can pillage). Probably makes sense to promote the knight and heal him until the lb moves.

Not sure MP is right about the probability of repeated barb landings, but if that's judged a likely scenario, then we should consider a privateer sooner rather than later.

Believe this was mentioned earlier, but a caravel working with a privateer can be effective -- the caravel scouting to discover an AI or barb ship, while the privateer floats just out of sight. The AI is not programmed to recognize the obvious collaboration.

Presume you intend to chain the galleys NE of SP.

That is also what I figured. We haven't used that windmill for a while, as far as I know. Let him think he accomplished something before he dies...
As long as he doesn't kill any of our units.

Yes, Privateer is in production in Moscow, iirc.

How many of these teams can we afford to build? :hmm:

The only places we have forests to chop are Yakutsk, and food is more important atm, and Vlad, which we should chop a library in? For the rest, we have to build them the old fashioned way... :viking:

Presume you intend to chain the galleys NE of SP.
Yes, every tile we can speed up, the better. :)

"How many of these teams can we afford to build?"
I don't have any feel for how much we gain by preventing islands from being settled, but that possibility, combined with the need to get a unit to 10exp, certainly argues for at least one soon, which is what you are about. Perhaps a second in Yak after food resources are improved. As the first one will be going after barbs, adding the caravel is probably not crucial (though the barbs might move there galleys towards a caravel and away from a privateer -- no experience with this).

Things seem to be right on track :goodjob:

Agree about healing the knight and waiting to attack.

A few MM'ing suggestions:

Hire scientist instead of merchant in Vladivostok in case we decide to grow a GS there later. Work lumber mill instead of workshop in Moscow to grow a bit faster. When Privateer is done perhaps go back to working the grassland farm. Stop working the grassland hill in OC and work either workshop or fur tile.

Be careful not to add too many beakers to Physics. Two GS's will produce around 5200 beakers so we want at least this amount left since there is no overflow from bulbing, excess beakers are lost. The same is true for Biology. When the GP is born in Fish City remember to hire more scientists in St. Pete. Try to get St. Pete to size 16 in 4 turns so that we can hire 10 scientists there when the GP is born in Fish City.

Played up to getting Physics. Nothing terribly eventful happened, although another Barb Galleys showed up and our Privateer sunk it. There are also AI Galleys that are starting to appear.

I may have made a mistake in research. As we had planned to use two Great Scientists to bulb Biology, I figured they would provide about 5,200 beakers (really is 5,346) of the required 5,443 beakers to get Biology. So I researched Steel to keep from losing beakers. It turns out that our next Great Person is due in St. Pete in 11 more turns and we can most likely research that many beakers in the same amount of time. I probably should have directly researched Biology and planned to use only one GS? You can have a look for yourself at the attached save.

The Log continues:
Turn 95 – 1724 AD
Load game and resume.

Chain the Galleys.
Promote Knight to CBT2 and set to heal.
Promote Trireme to CBY2 and set to heal.
Sugar Plantation completes, mm Yakutsk.
Fire Merchant and hire a Scientist in Vlad.
MM Moscow by working Lumbermill.
MM OC by working a Workshop instead of Grass Hill.
Physics requires 6,048 beakers and 2 GS’s will provide about 5,200. That leaves about 848 beakers.

IBT
Our Windmill on the Desert Hill is pillaged by the Barb LB.
A Great Scientist is born in Bombay.

Turn 96 – 1726 AD
Move some boats.
Worker orders.
Check city MM.
Check the trade screen, nothing going on.

IBT
The LB stays put on the Desert Hill.

Turn 97 – 1728 AD
Vlad grows, hire a second Scientist there.
MM OC as it grew.
We gain control of the Iron tile south of Rostov, so we work it.
The Great Scientist is still present in Bombay.

We have 475 beakers into Physics.

IBT
A Privateer is born in Moscow.
Our Barb friend does not move off of the Desert Hill.
We are informed that Roosevelt will trade Nationalism.

Turn 98 – 1730 AD
When Moscow is set to Wealth, we get a +1 gpt at 70% research rate. If we build another Privateer, we will be –37 gpt and we have 141 in the treasury. Decide to build a second Privateer.
MM Novgorod for hammers and Wealth.
Next turn for Great Person in Fish City, 83% chance of Great Scientist and 17% of Great Engineer.
Knight is fully healed, come on LB, move off that hill.
Decide not to trade Roosie for Nationalism as I do not wish to give up Astronomy or Scientific Method. :hmm:
Send our new Privateer heading for Gandhi’s Galley.
We are making 241 bpt and now have 716 beakers into Physics, so change research to Steel. Biology requires 5443 beakers. One turn will drop us to 5202, so I think we can wait a bit.

IBT
We get a Great Scientist in Fish City.
Our Barb friend still does not move, frozen with fear?
Another Barb Galley shows itself coming from the Barb continent, move the Trireme to block its movement.

Turn 99 – 1732 AD
MM St. Pete so that we get our next Great Person in 2 more turns, can’t get it to one.
Put all the citizens back to work at Fish City.
Recall our Privateer to meet the Barb Galley.
Roosevelt has Galleys in both Washington and New York. Position Caravel to watch both cities for Settlers.
Reduce research rate to 60% to maintain Gold levels.

IBT
The Barb Galley flees?
We now have Five Million souls in our empire.
St. Pete’s borders are about to expand.
Our Peace Deal with De Gaulle has been cancelled.
Roosie’s Galley left Washington headed for New York?

Turn 100 – 1734 AD
Send our Privateer after the Barb Galley. He attacks at 99.89% and kills him, now at 5.3 of 6.
Load a Worker on a Galley to head for Yak.
MM Moscow.
MM St. Pete to grow in one turn and also get a Great Person next turn. 94% chance of a Great Scientist and 6% chance of a Great Artist.
OK, lets find out what our next GP is going to be?

IBT
Moscow Privateer => Wealth.
St. Pete’s borders expand and it grows to size 16.
A Great Scientist is born in St. Pete.

Turn 101 – 1736 AD
With Moscow back on Wealth, increase science slider to 70%.
Use a Great Scientist to bulb Physics and he provides 2,632 beakers.
Use the second GS to bulb Physics for 2,632 more beakers.
We need 68 beakers to complete Physics.
Bring our Privateer back into our waters and set to heal, then he can go hunting in Roosie’s waters.
Move the newly built Privateer towards Gandhi.
Hire more Scientists in St. Pete, next GP comes in 12 turns.

IBT
Roosie comes calling and wants to trade Nationalism and 60 Gold to us for Scientific Method. Not right now…
We discover Physics, set research to Biology. We get a Great Scientist in Moscow.
The Barb LB stays put.

Turn 102 – 1738 AD
Biology requires 5,443 beakers. Our Great Scientist will bulb 2,673 beakers. This leaves 2770 beakers. Our next Great Person is due in 11 turns, we can almost self-research ti in that time? Looks like I should have researched Biology instead of Steel.
Also, Gandhi discovered Liberalism and will trade it to us.

Time to stop, save and consult.

Sounds good, leif. Will check save tomorrow.

Would be interested in opinions on the pros and cons of inciting the AI to war against each other.

No mistake, you just followed the plan. Even if we could have gotten Biology one turn sooner by self research I think it's still better to spend a GS because there is a low limit to how many GS's we can use for bulbing. When we get the next GS and can bulb Biology we can still use 5 GS's for Electricity and Fission but after that a GS will bulb Medicine which is not very useful. Thus we hit the "bulbing" limit later by spending to GS's on Biology rather than one.

Will check out the save this evening.

If the Taj Mahal has not been built we should probably trade for Nationalism and go for it. We have 150% hammer bonuses with marble and the industrious trait. Even if we miss we get some gold with nice multipliers on our hammers.

Interesting. :)
We can go back to Steel then and have it in 14 turns.

Taj has not yet been built according to the Info Screen.
The real question is what will we give up to gain Nationalism? Our choices are Astronomy or Scientific Method. Neither are very good ones imho.
Also, Gandhi has Liberalism and is willing ot trade it. Not very good choices there either.

Would be interested in opinions on the pros and cons of inciting the AI to war against each other.
The biggest problem I see is deciding what techs to give up to make it happen.
Mao will go to war with anyone.
Churchill will go to war with Gandhi.
De Gaulle and Roosevelt will not go to war with anyone as they have too much on their hands right now.
Gandhi will not go to war with anyone as he would have nothing to gain.
