SGOTM 11 - tao

Wow! +50gpt is a lot. Did you mm Ulundi for growth this turn? And please let fresh water cities grow to pop 7 for the additional upkeep - even though we don't currently need it.

I would keep 3-4 settlers for occupying newly conquered lands and found river towns with the others.

All the cities are growing, most with +4 fpt. I will use some of the settlers to built tax man farms. Thanks for the input.

The turns are not going that good. Mainly because a landing of 3 French MI and 2 German Knights. Ended up costing us 4 cav units. All three locals are throwing rifles at us and so far we have maintained them by using cannons and cav units. We have two more armies but running low on cav units.

The Euro block won't even talk to us. Locals are ready for Peace. Should I make peace with say Russia and Egypt for some gold?

IMHO no. Because peace with one of them makes peace with the complete block. I suppose we have to hold out until the Euro block (i.e. one of them - choose the cheapest) is willing to talk peace.

 Summary: Got two more Armies. Lost and retook Iznik. Took a Russian city Pusan and Egyption City of Giza. The plan is to take the Egyption Capital and the the nearest Russian cities. The Egyption horse has been reconnected. :gripe: There may be a few units in auto move...Sorry....:crazyeye:

850 AD (Turn 0): Moved the MI toward front, Killed redlined rifle, moved a stack of workers to road the jungle. Mm to get 50 more gpt and changed some of the immidiate settler builds to cannons or cavs-if they have rax.

IBT: The cav army die, killed by Siphai. Defenders of Seoul did a great job. Cav that killed the red rifle defended and killed a Egyption cav.

860 AD (Turn 1): Killed all but two russians near Seoul. Lost a eCav. Another eCav killed the Egyption rifle and give a GL which build an Army:) . Found N.Ngome on the lake NW of Medina.

IBT: Egyption Navy killed off a gally. Loose one cav to Siphai in Iznic. Two other units defended well.

870 AD (Turn 2): Killed off 3 redlined cav units and Siphi. Troops relocations. Hurry Rax in Seoul. 5 more cavs and a Musket built.

IBT: Crap..German and French troops land next to Beijing. A defending Ecav gives a GL.:D 2 Siphai's and a rifle move close to medina.

880 AD (Turn 3): Two caves redlined attacking 3 French MI and the 2 german knights are waiting to attack. There are 5 cavs in Beijing 3 are redlined. Killed siphias but the bad news is Egyptions are railroading. Next turn if the army survive we will take out the horse from Egypt.

IBT: French build Js Bach. More enemy movement. One German knight die attacking and the second one kill cav.

890 AD (Turn 4): Egypt no longer has horses. Killed the redlined rifle. Cav die attacking the Knight. Rush 2 cav, Musket and an Impi. Made another army.

IBT: More rifles move in. America start Magellan's. German knight kill himself attacking Beijing Cav...phew. Siphai die attacking Iznik. Cav destroy new City and take 0 gold.

900 AD (turn 5): Cav Army kill a siphais and a cav and retreat to mntn. Another army is about to knock on Pi-Ramesses.

IBT: Yellow Rusian archer capture 2 cannons. Another Siphai die attacking Iznik. 4 rifles move next to Mecca.

910 AD (Turn 6): Army kill two rifles near mecca, Pi_Ramesses attack kill 3 rifles. Army had another run but only have 2 hits. We can wait. 3 more cavs join. Kill archer and recapture Cannons and use them to distroy mine. Move units. Notice a Russian Galley heading to Ngome. Ooooops left Iznik open to kill a few rifles and ended with only the cannon and 3 settlers. Moved the settlers.

IBT: Iznik is lost to Otto.

920 AD (Turn 7): We wipeout Pi-R since we have a settler nearby and Egypt has way too much culture. Take Pusan, Kill off all but 2 rifles. Peace with Euroblock for 20g. Phew.

IBT: Germany and Vikes Sign alliance against Russia. Siphai kill a Cav and another die.

930 AD (Turn 8): We got another GL and we built Dingane's Army. Three cities riot....War unhappiness??? because Peace???.

IBT: More units pour into our area.

940 AD (Turn 9): We take back Iznik. Found New Pi. Pull back wounded army and other units from Wonsan.

IBT: Imp is killed by Siphai and a Archer kill an cav. German Galley move near Wonsan.

950 AD (Turn10): Kill several rifles, 2 cavs, Siphai and 2 archers. We take Giza. There are 3 cannons without defense. Sorry.

Got it.

I won't play until the weekend to allow time for some comments, but first thought is we need to keep the continents at war with each. Vikings will give us an alliance against Egypt, Ottomans & Russia and pay us 88 gold, Germany will give us an alliance against Ottomans and Russia, or throw in Egypt as well if we throw in a lux. France wants a luxury then give an alliance against all 3. Germany also has some silks we could trade for another luxury if we wished, would that help prevent another backstab? I'm not sure if we want to help them by giving them luxuries, but the alliances we can get for free may help.

I'm also not sure about going for Thebes - it may be better to got through Russia and Ottomans, leaving Egypt to be swept up last. Could be tough to take on egypt then though.

If we had more troops to defend them, I would fill in the area with razed cities with Settlers, to allow us to move forward, but at present we could not defend them. We could almost get to Istanbul doing that and cut off Russia from the rest of the alliance.

Thanks for the automove warning.

The last turn Egypt sent two cavs which killed two of ours and the army wiped the two out. Again we may have to send a suicide unit to deny horses to them.

I was planning on a three front assult. Siphai's showed up twice from Egypt side so I was planing to attack them with the two armies and a few Cavs while the Giza group attack Egypt. Also another army is poised to attack more Russian cities near Wonsan.

I was going to raze Giza and think it would be best replaced by our settlers. Three is available. I would abandon it the moment I get a settler there.

We have to deny the horses at Elephantine to Egypt. Otherwise a holding war - maybe getting El-Amarna and start shipping units - is IMHO fine vs. Egypt.

We have to fight the Ottomans to get rid of the Sipahi attacks.

We want to fight Russia because they have tons of money and we want it. And of course they may get horses again the future and we don't want that.

I would not raze cities any more.

PS: move mp from Ulundi to Zimbabwe to prevent riots and starving.

Not happy with these turns, I lost 2 Armies, 1 when I took Byblos and it flipped, another to a consript rifle. Gained 1 Army against 2 Siphai. I have secured the Egyptian Horses with a couple of new cities but progress has been slow against Russia as I have been defending against a large number of Rifles.

950 AD (Turn 0): Move Warrior from Ulundi to Zimbabwe to stop starvation. Good Start – my PC locks up as I check CivAssist and I have to re-boot.

Reload from original save and remove Warrior from Ulundi to Zimbabwe. Sign Alliance with Vikings for 88 gold from them against Egyp, Ottomans, Russia; Sign Alliance with Germany for their Territory map against Ottomans and Russia; French want something for any alliance so don’t sign with them. Pick of the 1/4 Longbow near Medina with a regular Impi from Mecca promoting him to Veteran; Can’t think of a way to cover the exposed Cannon without weakening our position; short rush Cavalry in Zimbabwe via Musket with the Viking gold. Press button.

IBT: Lose 2 Cav (1 Elite) in the stack by Giza to Egyptian Cavalry; French and Ottomans/Russia/Egypt sign peace; Russia/Ottomans/Egypt and Vikings sign Peace (so much for the Alliance); Russia/Ottomans/Egypt and Germany sign Peace; we lose the 3 Cannon, but Egypt moves them, leaving them exposed! Delhi: Worker>Worker; Zimbabwe: Cavalry>Cavalry; New Pi: Barracks>Musket; Kolhapr: Galley>Galley;

960 AD (Turn 1): recapture the cannon and bombard the Rifles; redline with Cannon then kill the 2 Egyptian Rifles by Giza; capture and kill an Egyptian Worker on the Horses – there’s a Siphai nearby I can’t do anything about; Hurry a Cav in Medina. Need to get the world fighting again and this time we have to use our luxuries; sign alliance with Joan against Egypt giving us WM, 4 gold for Gems and Spices; sign an Alliance with Bismark against the Ottomans for Spices, Gems and Furs; sign with Vikings against Ottomans for Spices, Gems and Wines; the Americans are down to 3 cities.

IBT: Siphai loses (just) to our Army in Giza, lose a Cav to an Egyptian Cav attacking over a river into Jungle; Egyptians move troops in to xxxx; Medina, Isandhlwana, Isipezi: Cav>Cav; New Isandhlwana: Cannon>Cannon.

970 AD (Turn 2): Attack Wonson and lose a fully healed army to a regular Rifle! :( The pillaging Army captures Elephantine, having more luck against 1 Regular and 2 Conscript Rifles; hurry a Musket in Iznik.

IBT: no losses in the IBT attacks, Egyptians are still being distracted with 1 of their workers I capture then leave exposed each turn; Iznik: Musket>Musket; Amatikulu: Cav>Cav;

980 AD (Turn 3): consolidation; rush Cavalry in Seoul; move in on Byblos.

IBT: Egyptians lose 2 troops attacking Byblos forces; refuse Peace from Ottomans; Seoul, Ulundi, Mpondo: Cav>Cav; Xinjan: Worker>Worker

990 AD (Turn 4): Bombard Byblos down but can’t take the city, just not enough Cavs.

IBT: Russians are trying to drop troops by Galleon in our undefended region, I have troops ready; Zimbabwe; Hlobane, Tugela, Umtata: Cavalry>Cavalry; Pyongyang: Barracks>Cavalry; Elephantine flips and we lose an Army – I nearly had replacement troops there :(; Ngome: Musket>Cavalry; Loads of cultural expansions as our initial free temples expand again; France declares on Ottomans;

1000 AD (Turn 5): Found New Tugela near Medina; withdraw from Byblos as troops would now be better used elsewhere and the city is too likely to flip.

IBT: Large numbers of Russian Longbows leave Byblos and attack our withdrawing troops, killing 3 Cav (1 Elite) and a Musket and capturing the Cannon; Russian drop 1 Rifle by sea; Bapedi, Zunguin: Cav>Cav; New Bapedi: Cannon>Cannon;

1010 AD (Turn 6): Nearly lose another army killing 1 of a stack of Russian Rifles; kill landed Russian rifle; rush Cav in Medina and Musket in Giza; capture Cannon back killing the longbows.

IBT: Refuse Peace with Egypt and America; 2 Siphai appear near Iznik; lots of Rifles now surround Pyongyang; Mecca: Settler>Settler; Medina, Intombe: cav>Cav; Giza: Musket>Musket;

1020 AD (Turn 7): Capture Wonson & 2 Cannon; lose 2 Cavs (1 Elite) trying to kill the 2 Spihai, but as another Elite takes on a 2/4 Siphai I get my 1st Elite Victory of many attempts and form an Army; Rush Cavalry in Pyongyang; Reinforce Pyongyang as best I can.

IBT: The French destroy the Americans; Rifles move past Pyongyand; I missed checking Seoul and it riots; Pyongyang, Hangchow: Cavalry>Cavalry; French start Newton’s University

1030 AD (Turn 8): Kill Rifles around Pyongyang, more will be there next turn; move cavs to El Armarna.

IBT: Zimbabwe, Canton: Cavalry>Cavalry; Bangalore: settler>Settler; Russians bring another Galleon; Maseru: Barracks>Cavalry;

1040 AD (Turn 9): Capture El Amarna, a Vet cav killing an Elite Rifle without injury and Eliting; found New Umtata to keep the horses away from the Egyptians; kill more Rifles around Pyongyang

IBT: Ulundi, Isandhlwana, Umfolozi; Pusan: Cavalry>Cavalry; Damascas: Settler>Barracks; New Hlobane: MI>Worker; New Mpondo: Settler>Settler; Vikings & Germany declare on the Egyptians (yippee!), Germans start Newton’s University & Smiths; Russia declares on the Vikings

1050 AD (Turn 10): Fail to take Yaraslavl with 3 Armies – I misjudge the distance as 2 Rifle block the route and 1 Army is redlined on a conscript Rifle.

Treasury: 321 gold, +230 gpt, Printing Press in - (0%)

Post-turn: There’s a Settler in position NW of Wonson to bring Yakusut into reach. Newly built cities have taken away the Egyptian Horses, I am down 1 Army, losing one in the Byblos flip (should have move it out even if it meant losing Byblos) and another to a conscript rifle; but gaining one against some Siphai. Egyptians are down to building Rifles and Longbows; the world is at war, the Americans have been wiped out. There are lots of Settlers waiting for use. Watch the Galleon SE of Maseru as it has not yet dropped off troops. I have left this turns gold for you to rush what you want to. There are too many workers chopping, you’ll need to sort them out when finished, I was putting them there to keep them away from Egyptians. I haven’t MMd this turn.

The Save

The situation looks serious, but not hopeless.

The really bad thing is that the other continent is just one block now. Should we spare one of our continent civs (e.g. Ottomans without horses - Russia has the cash, Egypt the GLib) to keep a war going between the continents?

How many tiles do we need on the other continent to reach the domination limit? Sooner or later we really have to count.

If we just need to hurry a few (say 6-8) temples on remaining cities on our continent, it might be worth taking GLib and getting access to railroads.

I would be willing to send 1 or 2 settlers trying to get luxuries on the other continent - even if it is only for say 10 turns.

Sorry. Very late night yesterday. I'm doing my best impression of a zombie so I'll look tomorrow if that's OK.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Well remembered. I hope you enjoy the meet today.

Unfortunately it's not a good birthday at all as I was woken up early this morning to find my flat flooded due to a burst pipe in the flat above!!!!! I now have partial electricity back (hence this post) but the bathroom and kitchen are off limits as the electrics in some areas need to dry out for a minimum of 48hours. Hmmmm.

This caps off a tough week at work where I've done little else but work. I was going to play this morning before going out to celebrate my birthday but now I think that I'd better do neither.

Please skip me as I really don't know when I'll be able to play a serious game of civ in the next few days. I'll be around in the forums for some light relief but these turns could be crucial and my mind is not totally on it. I finish work on Tuesday so if we need someone to knock out a quick turnset later next week I'll hopefully have this all sorted and be able to speed us up again.

SORRY.:(

@Tone: Good grieve what an ugly pre-Christmas gift. Please accept my sympathy and all good wishes to wrap up the mess.

Here we go:

Summary:
Two Great Leaders for army and Pentagon. Captured Istanbul and Moscow. Mostly done(?) with our continent. No flips. :D

0:1050ad: status: +230gpt; 41% of world, 46% of pop
sign alliance with Scandinavia vs. Russia
sign alliance with Germany vs. Egypt
trade maps to learn about the world
kill longbow, rifle
some mm to +242gpt
start some infrastructure builds
starve conquered cities to help against flipping

IBT Russia drops rifle next to Beijing, musket protecting settler NW of Wonsan killed by Russian rifle; Egyptian units move towards us

1: 1060: kill Sipahi at Gizeh; capture Jaoslav'l

IBT 2 Sipahi attacki, but loose

2: 1070: capture Konya from Ottomans
ecav kill redlined rifle and Great Leader Mpandel appears building another army

IBT Egypt kiklls 1 of our cavs, France completes Magellan's. and lots of Russian rifles approach

3: 1080: troop movements and healing

IBT Vikings build Newton's and start Universal Suffrage

4: 1090: capture Yakutsk with 499g; kill some more Russian rifles

IBT we survive attacking Sipahi and rifle

5: 1100: troops move and heal

IBT France drops cav near Memphis, Russia declare on Germans. French

6: 1110: capture Novgorod w 580g
raze Byblos (it is too close to Thebes and we don't want it to flip taking our troops)
some mm gives +257gpt

IBT we loose ecav to Sipahi

7: 1120: some troops heal, some move towards Istanbul

8: 1130: capture Istanbul with Hanging Gardens, Oracle, Sistine and keep it despite the floip risk
pillage Ottoman horses

9: 1140: capture Aydin and Great Leader Zwlithini appears: hurries Pentagon in New Amatikulu

IBT we defend against rifle, Sipahi; Yekaterinenburg is captured by the Scandinavians

10: 1150: we capture Moscow and Vladivostok and liberate 2500g
spend some of it for hurrying

Post-turn thoughts:
We are at 47% (41%) of world area, 53% (46%) of world population.

I left quite some money (1580g, +282gpt) for the future. We may want to hurry some boats for the upcoming invasion of the other continent.
I build some infrastructure for our core.
I started moving workers towards the core, anticipating we get railroad from the Great Library in Memphis.
I starved the conquered cities to prevent flips.

How do we continue? My ideas are:
1: wipe out Russia and get there remaining cash.
2: move our armies and capture Memphis to learn all techs
3: railroad like crazy to get a continental backbone allowing us to fight invasions

Now comes the tricky part: How do locked alliances work w.r.t. mpps? If they are "the same", we should mpp say with France and see that this mpp is triggered by some Scandinavian units attacking us on our continent. If this works, we will gain a tremendeous benefit compared to fighting all 3 other continent civs simultaneously. If!

The save.

I'm not sure about the locked alliances, I don't think they'll declare on one of their allaince though, even if a MPP is triggered. Not sure how it works, possibly they all declare immediately, before the MPP can be triggered.

Off Topic: UK CFC meet was good yesterday, I've put one pic up, I'll put more up later.

Nonetheless IMHO we should try it out. We have to gain a lot, and all we loose will be at worst one unit.

Thanks for stepping in so quickly, tao. All my electrics are fine and water damage was very minor so life is pretty much back to normal. That's one birthday that I won't forget for a while though!

On the MPP, I can't see it working but if we don't try it, we'll never know so we may as well give it a go. I also agree that it's about time to lose the free temples and ride the Great Library up to the Industrial Age.

Downloaded the save, but don't know when I'll get to play it. Sounds good on the Russian front. If the Vikings are starting Suffrage, it won't be long until Replaceables come into play, and I don't want to run any cavs against infantry.

3 turns in--Russia and Turkey are out, and I'm damaging Egypt. Viking zerkos are helping in the mopup. I am also rushing galleys and settlers to establish a beachhead on the other continent. We got almost 3K in gold from taking Rostov.
