SGOTM 11 - X-Nuts

At last check we were about 45% of the dirt and 53% of the population.

I'm hoping that the Vikings + America + England will get us to 75% on dirt if we send a couple of boats of settlers to fill in the gaps. As for the 75% of population, we might need to rejoin a bunch of workers to the smaller cities.

I had a thought a was interested in opinions. I'll have quite a few elite cavalry attacking and have a pretty good chance of getting an MGL. What's the best use? I'm wondering is building the Pentagon might be a good use. If I'm correct that would let us add a 4th unit and change the divisor to 4, so those cavalry armies would go from 8-4-4 (12-13hp) to 12-6-4 (16-17hp). That additional punch would heat up the knife for the English & American butters. As far as I can tell there will never be a reason to bring those armies back to the home island.

Sounds like a great idea!! :goodjob:

I've seldom played with it, so I thought the Pentagon only affected new Armies. Can you load up existing ones as well?

The tile numbers work out for victory if we take Vikings, English and American territories. Let's hope CRPMapstat is right... :D

Yes, you can load up existing armies too.

Another quick update: 11 turns complete - Vikings are off their home island and I've got 3 galleons about to deposit 8 Cavalry & 1 Cav Army on there remaining island - Minimal troop losses - Our home island is 99.9% ours (1 American city) - Only 1 French landing and that was repulsed - My work firewall now blocks yahoo mail & Civ Fanatics, so I'll be off line until lunch - I should finish up my set tonight

IBT: America declares war on Germany – France took Hastings

Turn 15 – 1310 AD – All set up for whoever is next

A couple of notes – SP is currently disconnected – Currently 116 Cavalry – 1 Settler on the march – I got lazy the last 4-5 turns and did not MM any cities, but it no longer seems necessary – There are probably enough cavalry over there to wipe out England, America & most of Germany if we want. As long as France has no infantry, we might consider taking her down a notch or two. – We need 301 tiles and America & England have nearly 400 between them. We’ll need to get some settlers to the new island soon. Beware of France. Now that she has Hastings she can reach the Viking holdings, sign peace there ASAP. The next player is in for a very bloody turn.

Now that's what I call a lot of Cavalry! :D Very nice! (I really liked turn 9). I would continue with the plan (America - England - Germany or thereabouts), but keep going into France as long as we have units and some momentum. Don't neglect getting new Settlers for filling in the spaces. We're very close!

:hammer: Nice work Denyd!! :hatsoff:

Yes, turn 9 was rather pleasant to read, prolly more fun to play!!

Roster:
Leif - UP
Gator - On Deck
(swapped)

Mathilda
Capt.
Denyd
- Just thumped Ragnar!! :goodjob:

Should be able to start tonight... :D

Ok, I've got it and am working on it now. :D

Just did a map check and CivAssist2 says we have 1375 tiles out of 1904 needed and that there are 285 unclaimed. As I understand tiles counted for domination, they include Coastal tiles, but not Sea or Ocean tiles.

Looking around on our continent, there are a bunch of unclaimed tiles and the question is whether it is quicker to rush some Temples or to rush Settlers to fill the spaces? Although some spaces will require a Temple or Library to create an expansion. Counting, I come up with about 190 tiles around our continent that would help speed getting to 75%. Unless, of course, we take down France as well? :mischief:

The best time to use Temples for cultural expansion is if there's a nearby city about 5 squares away (6 squares if both cities will get a Temple). Upon expansion you'll also get any open squares with your newly expanded culture on opposite sides of it. Better yet is a city surrounded by multiple cities! Might be good candidates in newly captured Viking territory.

example:

city1 culture open open culture city2

Upon city1 building a temple, and expanding, the first open becomes a culturally controlled space. Since the 2nd open space is now surrounded on opposite sides by your culture, you gain it as well. This doesn't work in diagonal directions, just for open spaces with Culture NW and SE, or NE and SW of the space.

In addition to rushing Temples (or Settlers) in cities, you can also disband units in them as well. You get 1/4th of the cost in shields (so a Cav would generate 20 shields.) An advantage of disbanding is you can build things even if the city has resistance; whereas you can't rush if the city has resistance. If the city isn't in resistance you can combine the techniques - disband a unit, then rush for the remaining shields. It avoids the doubled cost for rushing something without any shields in the build box! Alternatively you can cash rush a worker at double cost, then switch to Temple/Settler and cash rush the remaining shields at normal cost.

I believe you are right - Coastal squares are counted but Sea and Ocean are not.

Also, keep in mind that the Temples will take 5 turns to expand so you want to build them as early as possible. You could also build Libraries for 80 and get expansion in 4 turns, or build both to get an expansion in 3 turns.

I'm in favor of taking it to France anyway (unless there's a bunch of Infantry showing). Have fun!

Thanks.

America is nearly gone, thanks to Denyd's set up.

France has not been willing to talk. They landed 3 Vet Cavs in the former Japan area and I lost 3 Cavs attacking them. One remains, but we may lose a city over it. Darn RNG.

Nothing of note yet in the former American zone, England is next. :D

EDIT - They took a city but we got it right back. :p

Late night progress report. ;)

Have completed 6 turns. The Americans are gone, the English have 2 cities left and our forces are tired but in fair shape. Got a leader and followed Denyd's idea of building the Pentagon, due next turn.

We have 113 Cavs, so there has been some tough fighting and some tough RNG luck, as expected.

Leo's has had a huge effect as I have been upgrading Horses like mad and we have 2360 Gold in the coffers. About time to use some of that to rush Settlers in Viking and American lands and Temples and Settlers in our home turf.

There hasn't been too much activity from the French and there has been none from the Germans. So, we may continue into those lands as taking the last 2 English towns will expose us to their forces and as long as they don't talk, we'll have to take a bite out of them. :D

EDIT - The save is attached in case you would like to peek, or give any advice? :mischief:

Sounds like some good hammering was done while I was away.

Definately try to claim all the tiles we can on our mainland. Sounds like we have a good number of cavs so you may want some of our bigger cities to start cranking out settlers. Also once the land percentage is claimed don't forget to join workers to cities to help push up the pop count if we are still short on that percentage.

America and England have been sent to History's dustbin. France and Germany are missing a few cities. we still need 326 tiles and our pop is at 82%, according to CivAssist2. Please see After Action Report below.

Turn 252 – 1310 AD Pre-flight
Eek!! Where did all the leader heads go in the Foreign Advisor screen. You guys sure cleaned that out!!
How nice, Denyd has things all set up for some ROP abuse in America!! :D

Looking around, I see nearly 200 free tiles around our continent. Checking it out, some spaces can be filled with settlers and other will require a Temple or Library. Temples are cheaper, so they’ll have to do.
Change build in Isandhlwana2 from Horse to Temple.
Change Zunguin from Galleon to Temple.
Change Khurasan from Horse to Temple.
Change Basra from Horse to Temple.
Change Yellowknife from Settler to Temple.
Change Bangalore from Horse to Temple.
Change New Zunguin from Horse to Temple.
Change New Delhi, Amatikulu, Tientsin, Tugela and New Isandhlwana to Temple.
I think most of the rest can be done with Settlers.
Change New Ngome, New Hlobane and Ulundi from Galleons to Settlers.

Dial up the French and Germans and they aren’t speaking to us yet.
We have an ROP with America for 17 more turns, to wait or to go?
If we go, America and France will still be at war, so we might as well go after this turn, some units were just moved.

After Action Report.
I was thinking of playing a few more turns but decided we are at a point where we should make a few decisions. I’ve finished 9, more or less, thus far. There are still units that have movement left. There are Cav units set to go to Pi-Ramesses and Quebec for trans-shipment to Germany or former America, as well as some moving to Hyangsan for shipment to Houston. A few Settlers are set to go to places that need to a city built to claim tiles, both on the home continent and on the other. (Truth is I can’t find them all to stop their movement.) There is a Galleon off of Leipzig that can either be offloaded or sailed into Leipzig next turn for offloading.

England and America are gone and Germany and France are missing a couple of cities. We have the military might to take more but I think there are enough tiles to gain our win if we can get some settlers cranked out. The question is whether we can achieve 75% domination faster through whittling down France and Germany or by pumping Settlers and filling in. I, unfortunately, forgot that you cannot rush things in cities that are in resistance. I recently placed some wounded Cavs in the American, Scandinavian and English cities to quell resistance. Some cities can rush Settlers and I started that the last turn or so. Our Treasury has 1427 Gold and is gaining 440 GPT.

The only two cities to worry about for flips at the moment are Buffalo, Canterbury and London. The risk has gone down significantly in London since I razed Munich. France will take Peace if we give her 20 Gold. I didn’t do the deal because I didn’t want to contend with her settlers all over our captured area. At least while we are at war, we can pick them off as they try to find settlement spots.

In some ways, I think it might be quicker to keep fighting and gaining tiles. There are cities to send wounded Cavs for quick healing now that shouldn’t flip. But, again, we need to discuss and see what everyone thinks.

CivAssist2 says we are 326 tiles from domination and there are 496 unclaimed. In addition, we now have 82.1% of the citizens. So, once we get the territory under control, it is ours.

Resource cutting is active. I started with 116 Cavs and turn over 114. Denyd was right, it has been a bloody affair. In 9 turns, we have killed 101 units and lost 48 ourselves. But we have been able to make good on our losses.

Historically, the French have been most active in landing troops on our home continent. The landings have occurred on the eastern tip, in old Japan, near Kyoto and in old China near Beijing, where there is a Frigate and Galley now. There should be sufficient resources close by to deal with any landings.

I had planned on moving to Warwick and Avignon, west of London, to control the cities north of the mountains while also pushing through Germany and taking them out of the game. Then play an active defense around London to keep France losing units and off balance. Again, we should discuss this.

Please watch the Army in London as there is a flip risk there. Also, please feel free to change any build that gets us to victory sooner.

I, unfortunately, forgot that you cannot rush things in cities that are in resistance.

But as Steve said earlier, you can disband units and complete builds while in resistance, providing the city has enough size to produce the settler.

I may be able to play Sunday, but we've got some family issues going on. So if someone wants to grab it tomorrow that is fine with me.

I don't think we want to disband Cavs that we really need. :mischief: That is all that is over there. Many are currently redlined by those darned Rifles.

Sorry, just read your post in Civ 4 SGOTM. I'm headed there now. However, if Steve wants to swap with you, that is fine.

Steve? ;)

Excellent work Leif - The problem with the cities on the new island is that some were 12+ in size which is a 100% defensive bonus. That meant attacking at 6 against at least 12 on defense - You did a nice job on the Americans & English - My thoughts were similar to yours on adding a couple of temples, keep hammering on Germany and defend against France, while filling in old America & Vikingland with settlers.

I'm still somewhat in favor of fighting on against France, and certainly Germany. However, if we wish to sign peace, it sounds like there are more than enough units to set up blockades, preventing France's settlers from entering at least some of the open territory. (I haven't looked at the save.) Just a thought.

Next turnset will probably see this game finished. I don't see a problem waiting until 'Gator can play, so I'm content to do that. Besides I might actually finish CIV Gotm12 (if I find enough time!)

Thanks. You had set it up very well. :goodjob:

The frustration was attacking enemy cavs, on our territory, in the open, and losing so many times at 6 to 3. But since I faced 6 to 12 on the other continent, I guess I had best not diss the RNG Gods....  :please:

It will keep the game more interesting for the next player to do so. There is no reason not to. France deserves it for their arrogance in attacking our homeland anyway. :groucho:

We are set up for war, producing units in sufficient quantity to maintain the offensive, so why not. We'll just need to defer some gold to rushing settlers. On our original continent, we should relook where we need settlers and rush them in cities close by. Without rails, it takes too long to move them any distance. As I said, I had planned to play a few more and that was my next task, but I have to go to a conference the next 2 days and so ran out of time.

Good luck.
