SGOTM 13 - klarius

Played 8 turns. The save

Summary:
Mainly MM and waiting.
We have all the former Chinese, then shortly Arabian towns (except what's taken by Russia).
We are at war with Iroquois and took some towns.
We have MT and our first tanks are ready for a fight next turn. Flight is MMed to 4 turns w/o much effort (no starvation - we still have reserves).
We reached the city limit. There are still 2 settlers in settling spots in case there are some raze actions.

Turn log:
Turn 0 1150:
Iroquois peace treaty is up for renewal. Couple it with alliances against Inca,May;Aztecs and Arabs.
Not Zulu as they are down to 1 city.
Byzantines are annoyed with us. An alliance with the usual suspects for free cures that.

Go through our cities and assign a bunch of engineers.

IBT:
Ottomans and Netherlands sign peace. So Dutch may survive.
20 min for the IBT on my 1.6GHz notebook with 1 1/4 Gbyte, but it finishes.

Turn 1 1160:
Capture Shanghai. Still has 2 chinese citizens and harbor.
Same deal with Xinjian.

A few trades and MM.

IBT:
Iroquois make peace with Maya and declare by that.

Turn 2 1170:
Autoraze the northernmost Iroquois town.
Ally France against Iroquois for some gpt.
Idea is that France gets her troops in this direction so they can help if we have to go against Mongols.
Don't ally Mongols, as I doubt Iroquois could survive that.
But the Koreans can have the southern cities if they like. Alliance.

Capture Beijing in Arabia. Again still some Chinese.

Turn 3 1180:
Capture Tsingtao (Arabia) and Chondote (Iroquois).
MM a bit ;).

IBT:
Mass production in.
Switch over 12 pre-builds. Only 11 complete because of pollution :(.

Turn 4 1190:
A lot of deals have expired and we are only at 1442gpt at 100% research.
A few trades and we are back to 2484gpt and have alliances with all important civs (which may be broken for more gpt).
Capture Macao. Get a leader. I build BM in Beijing with it as we have not even enough units to fill the empty armies in Iron tip.
I contemplated on saving it for Apollo, but that's a bit early and we can hand build it if necessary.

Taking Chondote was a bit premature (too many longbows around). Gift it to France.

MM for easy MT in 4. We can still grow a lot for more scientists in the future.

IBT:
Iroquois retake Chondote, as expected.

The Russians take Anyang from under our nose after the Koreans softened the defense.

Turn 5 1200:
Take Shantung - the last easy accessible Arabian (former Chines) city. Koreans, Russians and Ottomans have done the rest by now.
Fight a little around Chondote, but don't attack the city as it would autoraze and expose troops.
MM still all in the green.
We have now ship chains to every corner of our empire.
Make peace treaty - alliances with England. We may run short of war happiness soon.

IBT:
Heavy fighting between France and Iroquois. Now we should be save there to make more progress.

Turn 6 1210:
Ship chain an army all the way from Arabia to Iroquois. Take Chondote. Prepare Mauch Chunk.

IBT:
More fighting between France and Iroquois.
Nagoya is given up for a settler.

Turn 7 1220:
Take Mauch Chunk.
Settle a city for dyes. Cannot settle a filler city I wanted as we reach the city limit.
I begin to pump up hospital cities with native workers as a lot work is already done.

IBT:
MT is in. Flight shows 5 turns.

Turn 8:
Need a lot of ships to get all the pollution done. But we have the chains :).
A little bit ;) of MM and some more city pumping and flight is at 4.
Capture Oka.

Further fighting in Arabia doesn't give us much. I would rather look if we get Dutch to declare so we can get our own source of wool.
For the next 4 turns we want to stay at peace with the big guys. After the initial MA trading everybody is fair game and we also don't care about our reputation anymore. It won't help us much for our space ship date, but we can still destroy a few nations just for fun. We still need a few civs to finance our spending, though.

I brought our empty armies to America, I didn't fill any with tanks, as I wanted the tanks to fight (and promote) a bit first.
We currently don't even have one complete pollution gang on our southern island, as I needed the workers at Kyoto. We should ship some more slaves if we don't need the transport capacity otherwise. Note the ship chain from Kyoto to New World goes far west to the interchange point leading also west - makes it easier to always have enough ships for every direction.

nice progress :goodjob:

Wotan, are you giving it another shot or is the game back to me?

About the future. Are we going to build the UN to prevent any sort of diplomatic mishap? If so, we better start a prebuild right away. Also, which tech path are we taking? I am not sure whether the internet would be beneficial to us as it would take quite a while to get it built on the big continent. I am sure we can gee research labs everywhere else anyway easily.

Diplomatic victory is disabled. Otherwise we would be really a bit late.
No chance to get internet on the big continent in time to make a difference. At home we can pre-build or rush labs. We could pre-build for Seti, but even that comes pretty late then and delays the research lab in that city. Probably not worth it.

OK, will try to get my brother-in-law to have a look at my "civ" computer. Maybe he can make some changes to help me run the application with less delays. I sure would like to be part of this more than in spirit. A bit heavy workload today and tomorrow but should be able to have a go at the save on tuesday evening if that is OK.

I had a look at the save. A few comments.

I think Babylon would be a good next victim, once we have made the transition to the modern age. We can get everyone to join a war. And the Mongols and Koreans would provide a buffer to our land. In any way. we should have some settlers ready in case a razed city needs replacement. The AI will often raze enemy cities and we should use that fact and replace them. Thus, it is good if the AI fight each other.

By the way, Guimares looks like a good candidate to actually get us the internet. I am sure we could gain quite a few beakers with it. Rush a police station, factory and coal plant and it should be able to make around 50spt (we could employ policemen there iso scientists)

Have played 4 turns but will probably not be able to continue until the weekend so maybe someone else should pick it up. I played until IA but stopped before starting the gifting techs and tech trading process.

Turn log

IBT: French finish the Hoover Dam in Thebes. (35 minutes)

1 – 1240AD
Caughnawaga captured with no losses to our forces, 2 Tanks attack.

IBT:Inca and Ottomans sign a peace treaty. Byzantines and Arabia sign a peace treaty. (25 minutes!)

2 – 1250AD
1 Iroquois Frigate sunk.

IBT: Babylon and Mongols ally vs. England. Byzantines and Inca sign a peace treaty. Maya and England sign a peace treaty. England DoW us!

3 – 1255AD
Trade Incense and 101 gpt for Wool and Gems from Ottomans.

Attack Akwesasne with Artillery and 2 Tanks no losses and a leader appear.
2 Iroquois Frigates and 1 Galleon sunk for no loss.

IBT: Japanese and Netherlands sign a peace treaty. Byzantines and Babylon ally vs. England. Korea and Maya sign a peace treaty. Iroquois and Russia sign a peace treaty. Babylon and Arabia sign a peace treaty.

4 – 840AD
We are in MA, Just accepted the next tech since there will be extensive trading now.
2 Iroquois Frigates and 1 Galleon sunk for no loss.
Captured Tonawanda without any losses.
Captured Centralia without any losses.

Stop here! Played until MA in two session, yesterday evening and lunch today. Post the save even though a lot of units are left to move so ThERat has something to occupy his evening with. It is still annoyingly slow to play but since this might be my final Civ3 game it is fun to play nevertheless.

The Save

It shouldn't be a problem to trade for the starting techs. I would just gift every body up and then look for the best sequence. Note we have still some optionals on Germany, so might want to start with them.

Research afterwards is also pretty don't care. I don't think anybody will still research something for us. But we can try to leave synthetic fibers, if ecology is available (gift it to everybody then). As the AI likes other techs more, this will only works with some luck.
The other 2 paths cross over too fast, there is no chance at all that we can give the AI enough time.

Military action - just what floats your boat. We will not gain much research anymore.
Look through the empire to maybe give up a few cities which don't help. There are a few cities which don't have non-shared tiles. But that's also not really important.

We could use the leader for a capital jump now. But that will cost probably some research in our old homeland.
I would just consider it to maybe San Francisco, if you still want a wonder there. Not to Portugal or Spain as there we get too many weak cities with low corruption rank, I think.

I would go for computers/internet as this could gain us a little more if Guimares really finishes the internet. (even better with a palace switch).

I don't mind to switch the palace as we could use some productive cities there. Will start playing tonight.

with this massive game, I will start tomorrow for the weekend, then I should be able to get 10 turns done

as for the palace jump, I am not too sure what we could gain from there. We have set up the whole area for scientist and hardly any infrastructure. The land is also divided due to Mongols and French. I think we gain more by keeping on plotting down cities for scientists. We should be able to get 300bpt with research labs on our Islands.

1.1260AD
as the turn is not done, count it as turn 1

time for gifting techs

sell Russia techs for 308gpt -> rocketry (after getting them to declare war on England)
sell Persia techs for very little-> fission (also get them to fight England for some razing)
gift Korea -> rocketry
sell Sumer techs for 11gpt/silks -> ecology
gift Babylon -> computers (now we have all 4 techs)
gift Byzantines -> rocketry
gift Ottoman -> ecology
gift Germany -> ecology

wow, Germany wants 620gpt +9700gold and 2 optional techs for ecology
get rocketry for ecology + 60gpt from Korea

get 400gpt + cash back from Germany for rocketry
get computers from Babylon for 2 techs, 9700gold and 350gpt
get fission from Persia for 3 techs

get 9700gold + 209gpt from Babylon back for fission
get 210gpt from Germany for fission
hand ecology to the rest

form army as I think the palace jump won't help
move some units and rush some research facilities
currently it takes 7 turns to mini, go for space flight as we should be able to reduce it to 6 turns

am a little disappointed that Guimares doesn't have a factory etc for the internet

2.1265AD
research dropped to 5 turns after all the research labs are in
the wars worked, we can found a new city

attack Salamanca and move on to Grand River as well
sell Ottomans fission for 264gpt, to Sumer for 227gpt

IT Zulu's are taken out by Russia

3. 1270AD
capture Salamanca
rush stuff

4. 1275AD
Guimares finished coal plant and starts seti as a prebuild for the internet (17 turns)
get another new city for free..wars are good :)
Grand River has been taken by France under our nose
it takes some effort, but take Niagara Falls, manage to take Allegheny as well
from there access to Verulamium is free and we take that as well. (this time from under France's nose)

sink an Iro galleon, as I want to avoid settler running about

IT Iron tip gets polluted continuously on the hills...we need more workers there
Babylon starts SETI

5. 1280AD/B]
found a city (thanks for the razing!!!), Arabia is down to 1 city now
take Cattaraugus and Iro's are down to 3 cities, manage to capture St. Regis via Mongol territory
get RoP with Korea, this and 2 tank + 1 cav army get us Kahnawake just when the others would take it :)
there is still a galley and caravel convoy, that might contain settlers, manage to take out the caravel

IT The French cavalry is simply too much for Oil Springs and thy overrun it, taking out the Iros

6.1285AD
some gpt ran out and we make only 1671gold
make Babylon furious, get actually 80gold demanding the cash, plant a spy succeeds, then sabotaging the cheapest production (90gold)
Babylon declares war on us

France joins, then sell them MT
get Mongols, sell no tech as it's too cheap
get Korea, sell them fission for some cash (700) and gpt
get Ottomans, then sell them computers for 227gpt and some cash (700)
get Persia to join, sell them 4 luxes and 3 resources for 180gpt, 2 slaves and 370gold
get Sumer, sell computers for some gpt
sell Byz iron for some gpt
income is back at 2200gpt

move some units forward to Babylon land after taking out a settler pair

IT Babylon comes with some cavalry and infantry invading Mongol land :)
Ottomans take out Arabia
we get space flight, on to mini (6 turns) or nuclear power (5 turns)

7.1290AD
take Cirta, use the cavalry units to leader fish, without success though

decide to stick with nuclear power for now as we make 3300bpt and could get it up to 3500+ to ge mini in 5 as well
rush more infra for more beakers

IT we got to be careful as Babylon has bombers, one cav army gets attacked twice
other than that it is nice to see the AI's fight each other
Russia eliminates the Dutch, Sumer start SETI as well

8.1295AD
science now at 3400bpt
move towards Zariqum, as they have MI, I rather get our artillery in position first

IT  Volcano erupts next to some of our Roman cities and the city is gone...

9.1300AD
found replacement city
take Zariqum after wasting more leader chances, move on to Sippar
sell Korea computers for 295gpt and 370gold

IT we get quite a few culture expansions
Ottomans start Manhatten

10. 1305AD
sell Byz some resources and luxes for 17gpt and some cash
take Sippar, abandon a small city and replace it a the front to get easier access for our artillery
take Akkad as it is only defended by infantry

we will get satellites in 2 turns, hopefully by then we can ge a 5 turn mini research (internet prebuild is done in 12)
Apollo is due in 3 turns as well, we currently make already 3500bpt

didn't rush many things as I leave this to the next player, we have 3400gold to spend
we might want to give up St. Regis and replace it in a better spot, flip risk is pretty high

Hi guys, back from a trip and checking in. I think i have discovered the main reason why the game is soooooo slow on my PC. Discovered that only one of the two 1GB DIMMs was functional. Have now managed to find the faulty one and replaced it with a new 1GB so the PC is back to 2GB. Loaded the last save I have and it took just over 10 minutes to run the IBT.

I think klarius is not around at the moment, so either Wotan or NP can pick his up...it's pretty straight forward at the moment

OK, I've got it.

I'll research Miniaturization after Nuclear Power for the Internet, and press on with the war against Babylon. Anything else?

I think that sums it up

Well, I'm still alive, but had a busy week before leaving. I probably will not be able to play in the next 3 weeks either (on holiday).

It doesn't matter much anymore (should be less than 30 turns to victory), but I don't see the war with Babylon helping anything. We just get a few small villages and will soon get into WW.

I would rather see peace soon for some villages (doesn't matter if some allies don't like it). Then a nice war with Mongols for the former American cities, which could still help a bit. And maybe a RoP rape for Sun Tzu's in Karakorum.

Alternatively we could also just end the game in peace .

Another point: I don't see settling villages to be helpful anymore, even if we get the opportunity. I would rather merge the existing settlers in cities. We have lots of cities, which could feed more scientists.

I really regret this, since asking for a skip only after wasting several days is wretched SG etiquette. :( But I'm having a week from Hell in RL, and I have no idea when I'll again have the time and the repose of mind to play Civ properly. So I'll have to ask to be skipped until further notice. My apologies to all of you, gentlemen.

NP, NP. ;) I'll try to have a go at the game tomorrow. We are all having RL interfering in our Civing.

If nobody can play this, I can play a few turns to get the game moving...let's finish this before too long

that's good, go ahead...we shouldn't drag this too long
