SGOTM 13 - Spooks

The one city which is almost certain to be abandoned is Kyoto. We will move our capital sooner or later. I think that we will eventually abandon both Kyoto and Osaka, replacing them with a city on the hill, but that's far into the future. In any case, I would be against improvements for either until our new lands are filled in.

Pre turn
Switch Tokyo to granary as harbour pre-build
Science down to 90% - MM still in 6
Curraghs move out (aim to explore S of western island)

Turn 1 730BC
Exploring
Give Osaka cow to slow Kyoto build so galley times with MM, not turn before
Tokyo gets mBG to give it a few shields

Turn 2 710BC
Exploring curragh in Portugal sees Port galley heading to Evora (its eastern isle)
2 suicide curraghs survive in sea :)
Portugal now has 420g

Turn 3 690BC
Both suicide curraghs sink - my luck is as bad as everyone else's
Return cows to Kyoto - both Kyoto and Osaka will now have 30 shields in 3 turns

Turn 4 670BC
Brown borders appear S of Portugal
Science down to 70%, MM still in 2

IT Russians build Great Library in Moscow (HG only AA wonder remaining)
Wrote too soon ... Amsterdam builds HG! :p

Turn 5 650BC
Contact Spain (the brown civ S of Portugal)
We_make_more_friends.JPG

Cost of MM comes down 10% lux does it in 1

IT Spain tells us to remove our hobo presence
Map Making comes in -> lit (switch to galleys via TBP)
Kyoto galley -> settler
Osaka galley -> settler

Turn 6 630BC
Tokyo's harbour will be built in 18 - we do get cheap 30s harbours
Lit currently in 28 100% science, -1gpt, 20g in treasury
Slow exploration in Spain

Turn 7 610BC
Settlers on way to blue and yellow dots - only have 1 warrior for protection as others needed for mp duty

IT American galley arrives at our starting isle from due west  - this officially sucks - AI can colonise our western isle at will - 13 towns, lack literature - as do Portugal and Spain (but will it last?) :please:

Turn 8 590BC
Galleys race to yellow and blue dots, curragh slugs it out in Spain
Kyoto grows size 4 - hires a scientist (lit in 23) - alt of 10%lux and work 4 citizens in Kyoto and Osaka -> lit in 27

Turn 9 570BC
Approaching yellow dot

Turn 10 550BC
American galley goes south from Tokyo
Warrior lands on forest at yellow dot - spy no barbs so cross fingers and land settler, other galley heads to blue dot with lone settler

The Save http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/sgotm13/Spooks_SG013_BC0550_01.SAV

My thoughts

America (with great lighthouse) is a major worry for colonising our land on the western isle. It is a race to get the other settlers down there. The 1 tile isle in particular, we could never remove them once settled (well not until its too late)

Barbs - once yellow dot is settled we can ask our military advisor re barbs - if he doesnt say any are nearby we are safe to plonk down undefended towns. Otherwise we probably need to use the warrior to scout out where they are.

Tech
At present none of the civs we have met know lit - if this could only hold another 20 something turns, we have a gilt edged opportunity for some catch up. The more civs we know at that time the better.

Hey, at least something is happening, finally :bounce:
Maybe this challenge brings Redbad and Wacken (back) into play.
Anybody heard anything from Monty? :hmm:

America is in monarchy, so at least we get a nice town without flip chance f we attack it at size 2. So no big deal if they settle there.
They will probably build a worker soon, and a slave as the first bounty of the war is always nice. :smug:

The AI sucks at any amphibous action, but of course we'd have to defend our home island...
Glad they did not land a pike / MDI pair next to Osaka... :scared:

Let's pray for literature to be not completely spread, then we will enter IA not too far behind.
And let's hope there's no Pike with the settler. Would be a tough mission for our warriors... :shifty:

Lets hope America brings a bunch of settlers and industrious workers. It will never happen but letting them settle some towns for us is fine. We have to grab the luxes first though.

If America is close lets grab the Lighthouse from them. This is probably a MDI/Longbow mission assuming they have iron. So the first order of business is getting to the Middle Ages. I think we should do philo-CoL; if Russia has the Library, lit will be widely known by the time we get it I would think. But if it is not it would be nice to pick up philo and older techs in exchange for Lit so it is a risk with a good upside.

Since production is poor we are going to have to buy an army. We will need about 10 workers after the current settlers. Maybe city 2 can build settlers while the granary city builds workers. We have to be careful not to overbuild settlers so that American towns settled will save us valuable shields. Workers can probably only road and then double back to mine things. We need no harbors on the big continent since we cant trade luxes home until we acquire the Lighthouse.

Not sure if I'd like some more analysis and discussion here.

Nevertheless I'd like to check who's up next:

Already played turns:
1. Wacken 20
2. Paul 8
3. KC 12
4. Abe 10
5. Paul 30
6. KC 10
7. Andro 10

I'd like some signs from Redbad, Monti and Wacken. Are you still / again with us?
If we don't hear anything, of the other four Abe would be up next.

Let's give them a chance to respond.

I'll look at the saves and dotmaps this evening and make out a plan. Then I'll play it tomorrow eve/Wed morn PST if no one pipes up before that. Reasonable?

I totally agree with KC that the American GL is great news, a huge opportunity really. Finding America and whatever friends Abe might have is high priority. One possibility is beat up on Abe a bit, get a city on his continent and jump the capital to it. Premature thought obviously but I can dream...

He must have come along the sea lanes to the northwest. I'll try to send whatever ships I can spare in that direction. Galleys would be better explorers than curraghs but they're too valuable as transports ATM.

Not sure about the GLH (well I'm sure it would be great to have)
How are we going to get an army together to take Chicago?
Currently all we can build are warriors
KC mentioned LBs / MDI, but thats a loooong way off.
By that time might the benefits of GLH diminished? Might America have rifles?
Not only do we have difficulty getting together an army to take a major AI (wonder containing) city, we have to transport them on suicide galleys which will probably spend several turns at sea.
Sorry to be a pessimist, but I dont think taking Chicago is realistic in the foreseeable future.

We'll see. LBows and MDI may be a lot closer than you think. I have this feeling that this planet is set up something like the Earth. After all, there is an Iberia.

If this is significant, then the Americans and Iberians don't know each other. Definitely, Abe can't get to the Old World the way that we did whic is why getting to America is so important. Could we find Iroquois and Aztecs over there?

One tech-brokering opportunity could go a long way :please: In any case. the more civs we know, the cheaper the techs get.

Well we wouldnt have to suicide anything, just make enough gpt to buy enough LBs in America (after getting a city there), and hold TGL for a turn or two for the loaded galleys produced at home to get there and fight off the counter attack(s) and make headway with Abe. Even ROP rape might work if Abe is sufficiently isolated.

Sorry guys for not responding earlier: I wasn't in the mood for SGOTM right after the house moving thing. But I'm back now.

Tomorrow I should have time to catch up with the present situation and contribute to our joined endevour.

Sorry, i'm officially resigned. I have read the other threads now, so there is no way back.

That's an even safer good-bye than selling your C3C-discs...

I also regret that but given the game settings I had expected it. This game has been awfully boring. I hope it does not stay that way... :(

Thanks for your company. I'll ask you again for SGotm14 :p

got it.
will play this evening or tomorrow

Oops can't get the save
We'll have to wait untill the server is back online.
