SGOTM 17 - Fifth Element

Great game!:goodjob: You guys did what I had thought most teams would need to do to win this one, and did it better than I could have imagined. Of course, you can take that either as praise or shame, but I definitely intend it as praise. I am impressed with your results!
Just some ice between England and that useless chunk of land and that would have been the only way.

But that useless chunk of land was there and many teams are exploiting it (or have exploited it). It would remain a mistery how so many teams did exactly the same thing and how could have they knew what was the right thing to do.
But you can take my last sentence as a stupid groan of the next wooden spoon winner.
I can only say that when we traded for England's WM their quarter of map was completely under their culture. I can only regret to have discovered too late that passage to south and - maybe - the wrong starting research. For the rest we played a great game and have had a real fun. Until we finished.

Just a row of ice and that could have been the perfect game: war and research at their best. A lost opportunity.

Probably an AW game with Space as the only VC for a medal can be the right solution for a really interesting game. Possibly with Mansa.

@Blubmuz/all

We nearly went the same way as you. i.e thinking paras needed. If it hadn't been for a recent GOTM where there was some inaccessible islands only available by teleporting I'd played we probably would have.

Even then the team took some convincing till AJ mentioned about a previous SGOTM where Kakumeika used opening/closing borders to move units.

Well played. :)

Edit.. We might still be on for the Wooden Spoon as well. Just noticed it goes to the lowest winning score. Not the slowest conquest. :)

We were the same, we hedged our bets with para's until we realised we didn't need them.

Congrats on the fast date considering you didn't teleport.

@ Sleepless and neilmeister
Our problem was that we were on the edge of strike after we wiped Mansa (in 2 rounds).
We were also late in building our first WorkBoat so we discovered late the passage to south. We built a city on stone and one by the gold just south to have a foothold.

It turned out useful, but we needed a GM to scout "Japan" and to meet Chuchill.

We were also not enough determined in conquering the 2 Hades, so we met late also Peter.

In any case, paras have not relented us: we used them to finish off Toku while we started with Chur. Our problem was that almost strike in the mid game, so we could have used Elepults and axes - provided we did not were ruined by their maintenance - when Sury has maces and pikes. To have more powerful units we needed a lot of time. We exploded later, after Lib for Steel.

We were already building airports the turn i started with Toku. And that was just a logistic constraint.

Congratulations :) Very nice game, considering you were the only team not utilizing teleportation.

I did not realize I replayed 28 of Blubmuz turns. I was not aware you were updating this post. Have you been doing it continuously or did you make a summary just now?

I was going to ask. Do you want some help to keep a few posts on the first page updated during the game for the next game?

It's a classical copy/paste typo :crazyeye:. but the link is correct.

I kept that post updated, sometime almost immediately, sometime with a delay of 1 TS.

Thank you for the offer, but it's not possible: a post can be updated only by the one who posted. Only the Staff can modify a post of another member.

Some help can be appreciated in what to post, i mean what can be useful to have in a sigle place without the need to search the entire thread.

Well, it would not be so difficult to have me do a post at an assigned time and then give me the responsibility to keep it updated.

Signed on the first page, even if i need to read carefully the VCs.

I'm in for another but I start a training class to be a university professor on the 6th of Aug and it last 3 weeks so I may be a bit absent to starr.

I'm on but I will be gone for the next four weeks.

Things are not really looking good. We have 3 most likely active players (Blub, Folket, and myself) and one not always available (unclethrill).

learner gamer is not available, and I also invited Izuul, but he might prefer to go to PR (he was invited there too) if anywhere.

I don't really have any other ideas about people to invite. We can again hope for getting some good assigned players, but I guess some other teams will need them too...

Unless we get some more active players I might consider to go with another team this time. I will try and invite one more player first.

Actually we played in 4 the 2 last SGs. I don't see where the problem is, provided the Staff will accept a so small team.

Post counts rather show 3 active participants, and 2 players who were active 1/3 of the time, and unfortunately unclethrill won't have more time now.

The thing I'm trying to say is, I think we could do much better if we had more active players. With 5 active players we would have more early testing, more opinions about grand startegy, etc., and the time invested per player would decrease (which I would like very much, actually this is the reason for my previous post. I would like to invest the same amount or less time in the game while also getting a better team play for the next game. Problem is that if I see that we are in need, then I tend to postpone more important things for this, which is not healthy for my RL :) ).

Let me show an example of what I'm talking about.

Mastiff jumped in for 20 turns from t50 to t70, he posted his PPPs, played 20 turns, and he didn't really add much besides that (No hard feelings, I know that RL can be hectic).

He played a set where better teams do at least 5 test runs. It could be done by anybody, not necessarily the active player. We did NONE. (No hard feelings for anybody). The few players who did tests in the beginning didn't have time later, this is where the extra 2-3 players would be very handy.

Not to say that Folket's concerns about the second PPP were a bit late, but due to low player count Mastiff was free to go on with Blub's and my green light. If we had 2 more active players, maybe one of them could have posted some of the things that Folket voiced a bit earlier.

I know these are little things, but we need to improve a lot about these. And we need more activity.

I'll keep trying and look for people to invite. If anybody has ideas about who we should invite please don't hold it back!

EDIT: looks like pomthom is willing to join after he has done some research. Things are looking better ;)

I tried to recruit an emperor level friend. He did not seem interested. But he shows great potential and I will give it a new try. I was very impressed at how fast he reached emperor level play. It was only our second game.

I only have four days before I disappear so I do not think I will have time to convince him.

My experience with university professors is that they have very much freedom on how to distribute their time. So let us hope Germany is as relaxed as Sweden. Missing three weeks we can live with.

Have people talked to Pangaea and Mastiff?

I will return on the 15th of august so I will miss the first 10 days. Perhaps I will get hold of a computer in Thailand the last few days and have opinions.

I do not remember any concerns of mine but I guess I just did not have energy or time to do research earlier which is a very good point. With more players it is more likely someone will have energy and time to make comments.

Gogogo Folket!

I hope you can convince him. Why are you going to Thailand BTW? work or holiday?

Holiday.

I met my wife ten years ago in Laos so we are returning there for our anniversary.

My wife also wanted to have some beach time in Thailand as well.

I had a short talk to my friend yesterday and I have manage to push him into cautiously positive. Knowing his personality he will not sign up unless I get him to pleased to join zone. And I do not see a way to get him to Friendly fanatic player mode before I'm leaving.
