SGOTM 18 - BadCiv

Joao won't take writing, he says "We have nothing to gain"-- makes me think maybe he's already researched most of it himself?

Gandhi is the only one with Meditation to trade, so I think we need to pick up Mysticism first. However, Khan doesn't like us enough to trade, and we have nothing to trade to Musa..

Evil is willing to sign a cease fire in exchange for Writing and Fishing, for what its worth.

Gandhi is offering Mysticism Hunting and Sailing for Aesthetics. That's pretty much the only deal available at the moment and it's not very exciting. We can slow research Mysticism ourselves in 2 turns so I think I want to do that, then try to trade for Meditation & the lesser techs..

that's a good idea. you could even also give him AH too, if fishing alone doesn't get us +1 fair trade bonus.

and hmmm, this tech screen doesn't look as wonderful as i'd hoped. it looks like gandhi doesn't have alphabet, and joao doesn't have writing. so we still got some high-value trade fodder here. it is highly likely gandhi is also researching alphabet, or possibly monarchy, since he doesn't have any other interesting techs.

next thing we research should be mysticism I think. right now, we need both poly and med to get the two wonders we want, but we're blocked by that from myst. however, joao won't trade with us until cautious, (perhaps we can gift him writing?), and fishing won't be enough on its own t get us myst from gandhi. (although you can check). so, maybe after we put a turn into myst we can get myst <-> fishing, and then make a bigger deal for alpha for some bigger techs (e.g. sailing+med+poly)

yeah, he probably already has almost all of it, oh well.

it is REALLY GREAT that we can get a cease fire for such cheap from docevil. its one of the main reasons i wanted alphabet... now even if fat bastard shows up at our doorstep next turn, we can instantly make peace!

agreed agreed. give it a shot!

Can't even gift Joao writing, it's redded out.

Here's something for everyone to consider, the spot north of our mountain border

Could accommodate some decent cities. We'd be pressing up against Khan. War with one of neighbors is inevitable, I guess the choice is-- fight with Khan for good land, or fight with Joao to keep him from spreading like a weed?

T58:
After putting 1 turn into mysticism at 90% research, Gandhi pops up to offer us Mysticism for fishing. Thanks bro!

Ugh. And yup, Joao & Mongolia don't like us enough to trade, even after the fishing freebie.

If we take Polytheism we can research Literature ourselves in 8 or 9 turns, starting the Great Library and National Wonder, trade Literature to Musa for Math or somesuch.

Research Polytheism or Meditation ourselves would take 4 turns for either. Mathematics 11, Currency 18. Iron working available in 8 but seems pretty pointless if we end up not having iron.

did either of them get +1 relations from the gift? you might need to gift AH too.

what have you been building in the cities?

I gifted fishing to Khan, I tried to gift AH the next turn but it was redded out (so he's presumably researching it on his own). An error on my part but hey at least he isn't near horses yet.

I had nothing to gift to Joao, he wouldn't even accept writing (because he was 1 turn away from finishing it).

Current city builds are:
Washington - Settler (6 turns)
Groove York - Research for 2 turns to let it grow to size 3, then finishing up a worker
Woodstock - Granary, waiting until population allows whipping.

I peace out with Dr. Evil. My reasoning is better to do it now while we can with cheap techs, then wait and give him the chance to get those techs from the AIs who are predisposed to like him-- then suddenly have nothing to give up when Fat Bastard shows up.

T60:
A conversion request from Musa-- again, I think we should say no? We got what we wanted from him for now..

On the other hand-- I did spot a Jewish missionary northeast of our civ a few turns ago. It didn't wind up in any of our cities so I think it may have gone to Khan..

i'd say no for now. don't want to commit to a religion unless it benefits us.

how much longer are you going to play? its been 11 turns so far, and drach and hips haven't even been around for any of this...

I let Musa know "this sort of religion ain't my bag, baby."

Mali located, north of Portugal:

sweet.

looks like phoenix rising definitely went for some kind of rush, probably a horcher rush is my guess. looks like it didnt pan out for them either, as I don't see any big jumps in their score after their power has finished rising...

posts per turns is my favorite stat

BadCiv 5.4
Phoenix Rising 26.37
The Shawshank Redemption 65.81

also note to next player: I was dumb & I tried gifting wheat to khan for diplo purposes but it didn't accomplish anything and actually lost us health. make sure to cancel that as soon as is possible..... in addition the forest NE of Groove York is prechopped but I forgot to slap a label on it.

Are we trading our Bacon away? If not, we could potentially trade it with Joao for Steak.

The land immediately to our north and west past the Freelove Mountains is a tad lacking IMO. There's no food north until the Corn in the east, which Genghis is rapidly nearing.
The jungle is littered with random plains and desert tiles (desert Pigs...:thumbsdown:).
As for the west, Joao is rapidly chewing that up and I don't recall anything amazing outside of the 3 food city that Joey pointed out, 3W of the Horsies.

War's going to have to be sooner rather than later, IMO.

Mansa has Theology and Currency open already. That's just an observation.

Where are we planning on building the Paya? Throw it in Groove York? Would help get its culture up for defense and borders... we don't have any desperate need for a Great Prophet and hopefully anyone who had a Holy City will plop down a shrine.

Yes, Mansa is way ahead of everyone. It'd be pretty cool to get an AI to wage war against him to sideline him for awhile. Khan hates him, though he hates us only slightly less, but maybe there's an opportunity around there somewhere.

My thoughts on the wonders were--
Paya could be built in Groove York really quickly with chops.
National Epic could go in Washington, where it'd hasten along the 2nd great spy
And then National Library could go in either York or Washington. If the latter I'd prefer waiting until the GP pool fills up a bit with spy points to give us a good chance of landing that spy to get Scotland Yard, instead of a scientist. Woodstock could host the library and feed a bunch of scientist specialists but the site has so little production it would take some pretty slick micro.

The shot of Mansa's border shows he has marble so if we see he's researching Literature (or we trade it to him) I think York would be the best bet cause of how quickly it can be churned out. Plus two wonders there would make nice cultural border pressure against Portugal.

I doubt we have a chance at Hanging Gardens, Mansa is in position to get stone hooked up soon & is almost done with construction and we're not close.

Mansa has Math which gives him a slight lead in getting the Mausoleum but that wonder is by no means out of our grasp yet...

What are some ideas for our next city (and when)? I don't think Invasion Spot should be a high priority just yet, as we don't really know what Goldmember has and where. I'd like to say the Banana Steaks on Wheat city should be next, as it'd give us a foothold out in the jungle and not be too far away (2.5 turns by road from Groove York). Stone City can wait as well as we're not pushing for any Stone wonders and Hanging Gardens will more than likely be gone shortly. The land immediately north of Groove York has no food bonii jumpstart it, making any city there a military holdover if/when we attack Genghis.

settling invasion point would give us copper and even though we don't have any army to attack goldmember we can start building a transport navy from there

Hrmmmmmmm I suppose. Production would have to come from the Copper and possibly the mine 1W while Woodstock whips its buildings in... If we do this, what is Woodstock's role short term and long term? Additional navy before transferring to a specialist farm? What about Invasion Spot? Once it's served its purpose it should be left to "rot", IMO.
