SGOTM 18 - BadCiv

Ok, now that that's taken care of: the game autosaved when I resolved the single turn so I'm gonna reload from the 3200BC autosave and play the next three turns.

I'm gonna:
gift marble to genghis (provided he's nobody's worst enemy)
slow-build the worker
scout the railroad (?) with the fembot
scout the flood plain with the warrior.

Spoiler :

Standing atop the mysterious railroad tile, the fembot finds wheat and furs but no signs of civilization. As you can tell from the mini-map, we're almost due north of our capital, but separated by the mountain range. Do we trudge east / south-east through the forest, or move more quickly to the north-west? Alternatively, do we flesh out the map to the south-west around Joao?

I thought we were already getting foreign trade route income from Khan, it says we got a trade route right there...

We can trade stuff at him but we don't get trade route income yet -- presumably until the route is de-fogged.

I would follow to river to find Khan, but we're sitting on top of an enormous river network. He could be in almost any direction! I can post a screenshot if y'all need, but it looks as though he could be in any direction -- northwest of the raiload, east of the railroad, even due east of our capital.

Also, we have a wheat that we're not using yet. Do we want to gift that too, or will we require it within the next 10 (?) turns?

Rivers inked in red. Maybe I'll go northwest until the river ends, then swing clockwise to scope out the remainder of the tributaries?

We don't have a commerce generating trade route is what they mean. We can trade resources. Since Joao is to our west, it's more than likely that Genghis is to our north or east. I'd say swing Fembot towards the east from Heavy Metal Hill. :spank:

I'm pretty sure we can part with the wheat for a li'l bit because we're not gonna approach health cap in the next ten turns as we whip out the 2nd worker and the settler, right? With no garrison we'll reach happy cap before health cap. So let's give it to Khan, eh? Is that how diplo modifiers work?

Leader/civ happiness from resource caps out at +2 IIRC and doesn't increase faster with more resources IIRC. I'd rather trade the wheat than the marble honestly. Granary will be up before we know it, yeah, but we're fine on health. Also it's very easy to forget about free resource gifts which would be bad if we're going after a marble wonder, even with Industrious. :egypt:

parting with wheat would be less ideal because there's the chance it could actually help genghis. otoh, he cant do anything with marble until he at least gets aesthetics, and we'll remember that we gave it to him because we're gonna want to build some marble wonders as soon as we get the techs!! its not a big deal either way thoguh

I've already started giving out the marble, though, so it's moot. I'm persuaded by Joey's caution against giving out things that can actually help our opponents. If Drach is right and the modifier doesn't accumulate faster with more resources I should be good to play on with no further changes.

Unless somebody has a scouting recommendation? I personally want to scope out the river to the northwest of the fembot's current location, just because it shouldn't take long to sweep across the plain up there. That way we're insured against the possibility of genghis being there and don't have to run all the way back through the forest in case he isn't to our north/north-east.

I made a unilateral decision to move the fembot northwest. you can see that the river may extend quite a ways to the north! It seems to me that Khan could really be just about anywhere...

From here we could try to follow the river around the mountain range, or double back to the east and finish exploring the north of our capital.

Our warrior finds fish, a plains hill, and what I expect are the boundaries of Goldmember. I wonder if there are mountains separating us? Naval AI would be easier to keep at bay, but still annoying, I expect...

Our worker completes. What will we have him do first? Chop? Farm? Cottage?

This is also the turn that we go into anarchy to switch to Slavery, right?

yeah switch into anarchy this turn, and have him chop.

i can't quite tell, but it looks like goldmember has a 1-tile thick ocean belt separating his city from ours. if we were to plant a city on one of those plains hills, we could try to invade his ass to take either the GLH or Colossus, whichever is there... that'd be a medium-term plan though, as we still need to set up defenses at the choke and pump out a trio of particular wonders.

with the flood plains and the fish it's starting to look like a pretty appetizing site. Can't wait to play the next turn and find out what the warrior can see from atop the hill!

I'll have the worker start chopping the forest 2W of the capital -- opening up the river tile for the commerce bonus & making it easier to road later.

Anybody have any thoughts on where to send the fembot? Khan could be just about anywhere, it seems...

i still think to the NE is the way to go. weird that the railroad didnt lead anywhere...

agree with NE. maybe the railroad was the originally placement of some city and the map maker decided to move it later. which would mean someone has the railroad tech.....

Good scouting news, everyone!

Moving the warrior atop the hill, we find bronze to go along with those fish. It looks like we should be able to squeeze in two good cities, one here and one just east of the capital.

Moving to the northeast, we find bronze and Khan! Do we need to de-fog the whole route including within his borders to get the commerce income? If so, we can de-fog to the south, then move back up north once we have the open borders in Writing.

I went ahead and uploaded a save if y'all wanted to peek. http://gotm.civfanatics.net/download.php?file=BadCiv_SG018_BC3040_01.CivBeyondSwordSave

Mansa Musa founded Judaism and flipped into Judaism + OR. Goldmember adopted Slavery. Joao II founded the city of Oporto in a distant land.

We flipped into Slavery and the worker is chopping as planned. I could play some more turns yet (I don't have to worry about timing a whip properly until the settler) but I'd like to hear from y'all where to explore with the fembot next. The warrior is gonna keep trudging east until he finds mountains or starts getting painfully far from home, unless you guys tell me otherwise.

I don't recall if the traderoute connects with vision of borders or of cities. I think it's borders. Might be safe to explore a bit further north to be sure, then head back down south to defog the rest.

Kind of a shame with New Flood Central having the tile spread that it does. I don't see any reason to not settle on the plains hill 1W of the copper, but that would leave 2 floodplains unused. Considering it's pure dead tiles around the pair, might be better to just write them off as an unfortunate ungroovy happening.
