SGOTM 20 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

I am done!

Some of the worst RNG I have had go my way in a long time. :(

We own Edrine and the copper is cut. Bursa has been reinforced heavily and 2 more axes are headed north. We may want to build another chariot or 2. Luckily he built axes and not spears or it could have been worse.:whew: We may need to throw in the occasional MP build in spots.

We saved up and got enough fail conquest gold to research Math if we want to.

Next!

Note the 2 sets of barb borders south and SE. I am now guessing that the religions are split among 7 over seas cities.

And the worker actions on the hill SE of SL are a mess. :dubious:

I miss read what was previously done and made a mess of it. There are 2 turns into a mine and 1 turn into a forest chop. The only way to not waste that turn is to chop first and then complete the mine.

Ankara is not very well protected if those axes continue north.

Looking at the map again, Suli still has access to the copper until we capture Ankara because he has sailing and we don't block the route. We need to take Ankara ASAP!

Looks like solid work, Ronnie1! :goodjob: Even if there was some messy stuff here and there, the trades and overall warfare look to be going decently. And the RNG wasn't completely cruel -- I saw a couple withdrawals by our HAs in the log.

So I don't see any iron in those screenshots.... :( I have not checked the save. Is there any around, or are we out of luck on iron for now? Given how generous Pollux has been with resources in general, I guess we really should not complain. Not that that will stop us.

If Suleiman has multiple axes left (and it looks like he has at least those 2), then I agree that at least one more chariot is probably worth building. Ankara definitely appears to be our next target, as it is far more powerful a city than Bursa. Also (I think) that it is on flatland. Rheims will take some time to prepare for conquest across the water...does Suleiman have good relations with anyone? If the diplo penalties aren't going to be too bad, we may want to make peace once we own our side of the water, maybe extort some tech from him for a peace deal?

On the barb cities, the island one closest to us definitely got 10+ culture/turn right from the start. So either it is a double holy city, or Pollux gave it some buildings to boost its culture output to make it look like a double holy city. Hmmmm...no way to be sure until we can take it. If we don't see more than one religion, we will have to assume there were culture buildings that were destroyed upon conquest.

Overall I think we are doing OK. Suleiman is not dead yet but we have severely damaged him. Our demographics looks pretty good other than GNP, and with food, hammers, and land all looking strong GNP will catch up swiftly if/when we come out of war mode.

What does the current tech screen look like? I see from our espionage that Catherine is researching Monarchy...that would certainly be a very nice tech to have. Lots of other stuff could be useful as well. What wonders have been built? You mentioned "fail gold" but I hope we have not been part-building wonders. I am assuming this is conquest/pillage gold and binary research saved gold, rather than fail gold.

Conquest gold indeed. ;)

Iron is in our territory on the northern border with Peter. We have a worker building a road there. Another will kill time pre-chopping waiting for Math and MA's border pop.

We have 1 galley whipped already and your axe is moving south already as well. I was thinking of putting an axe and an HA over to Rheims ASAP to pillage him.

Some of those apparent withdraws are not. If you look closely at the unit names you will see that on 1 line it says withdraw, but the same unit is dead on the next line.

My first FL II HA withdrew but did not scratch the spear. My next FL II HA died but wounded the spear at least. Then we lost at 69.7% and 70.6%, our next one withdraws at 75% odds, then we lose again at 88%!

We sort of get that last one back when our chariot wins on defense at 18.x% IBT, but still, those are four pretty bad rolls in a row.

Good job Ronnie 1, and don't worry, sometimes the RNG gods are just messing with you :-(

I guess I'm up.

Draft PPP

Primary Goals

- Conquer Suleiman!

Research and Tech Trading

- Mathematics. What should I trade away and for what?, if any trade becomes available.

Diplomacy

- Open borders with Peter and Augustus, if they become available.
- Keep an eye on possible resource deals.
- Please remind me of our favoured list, if you recall it, otherwise I'll dig it out.

Worker Actions

- Alex and Dwight connect Iron. Then prechop, or pasture cows and horses at MA.
- Billy and Charlie finish mine, then prechop around CS.
- Captured workes to be renamed.
- Two in Edirne to pasture cows at Istanbul, then mines at Edirne.
- Two in homeland, prechop, and a cottage or two around SL and HF, as military cover permits.

City Builds and Management

- SL builds HAs.
- HF builds HAs.
- CS builds HAs. Try to set up a three pop library whip, at pop 8.
- MA finishes barracks, then stables.
- Istanbul builds another galley the granary.
- Edirne build granary.

Unit Management

- Warrior to the west, continue scouting west.
- Scout continue towards the east.

War Planning

- Heal troops in Edirne.
- HA in CS move towards Bursa. Axeman towards Bursa.
- Prepare to take Ankara.
- Try to sneak attack the axemen with chariots.

Miscellaneous

- Do we keep all EP on Catherine?
- Pray to the RNG god.

Stopping Conditions

- Any close neighbor declares war or goes WHEOOHRN.
- Meet the final AI and can learn the hidden objective.
- Serious threat (AI or barb) to any of our cities.
- Something unexpected.
- 5 turns pass.

Good work Ron. :) Nothing to feel bad about there.

Great to see you pick it up nice and quick McArine :goodjob:

The roster order is:
  1. Ronnie1 Just Played :goodjob:
  2. McArine Up Now! :scan:
  3. haphazard1 On Deck :p
  4. Sleepless
  5. nocho

Regarding Rheims: Yes, it looks like it will have some cultural pressure. However, we should expect to take control of its immediate ring which includes the gems, pigs and fish. Note that the crabs and wheat are actually shared with Istanbul. If cultural pressure is a big problem, we could always continue our war against Napoleon next :mwaha:.

Cottages: We shouldn't neglect our economy. We might consider slowing HA production in cities like SL and HF in favour of working cottages. Just a suggestion.

Techs: Maths for sure. Thereafter, Currency? Extra trade routes across our empire would be a big advantage. Do we have enough :gold: to sustain a 100% research run to get both of these?

Diplomacy: OB with Peter and Augustus.... they are worst enemies of our future friends Catherine and Julius. I suggest we keep our borders closed to them. Or - if we OB with them, I think we should be prepared to accept a Stop Trading request against them.

Favoured list is: Catherine, Victoria, Julius, Louis.

We have enough cash for Math only. Conquest cash from 3 more cities will help though. ;)

Bursa will actually be a problem if we can't lure them out. I think we may want to try something like leaving a city unprotected to see if he will send a stack into our territory. If all those units stay put in Bursa it will take a crap load of hammers to unearth them. :(

About the OB's. If we want to run a unit through to scout then it may be worthwhile in the short run. I signed OB with Nappy so I could get south of Rheims. We should cancel that deal as soon as we can imo. I don't see a reason to OB with Peter, but I am also not sure about killing him off either. Who will Cathy hate when Peter is gone? Same can be asked for all of the pairs really. Might we be better taking out 1 pair for our land needs ensuring future conflict for those remaining?

Draft PPP looks pretty good to me, McArine. :) One question: do we want to fit a chariot into our build queues somewhere, to help deal with axes? Or do we have enough chariots to handle them?

Cities on hills are always a pain at this stage of the game. :( Worst case we leave Bursa until Construction and elepults. Not my preferred approach, but we could. Or if we get iron hooked up, we could build some swords to serve city raider/initial assault duty.

This is an interesting question. With no religion among the non-barb civs yet, there is not much diplomatic action other than the preset -20 modifiers. But once religion gets into someone's hands, it will spread and we could end up with a big same-religion-love-fest. But if we leave pairs alive, there will always be someone the AIs hate more.

I would concentrate war efforts on Ankara and Rheims. Bursa right now is too heavily defended and barely worth sacrificing any units on. Ankara and Rheims are much better cities and flat land too. I'd try to sign peace after those 2 cities and finish Sulei later.

Also, if we are meaning to attack somebody else too with HAs, then our window for doing so won't be all that long either. Let's not get bogged down in the Sulei campaign too much. I'd even settle for just Ankara TBH, if that means we can attack Peter sooner. Cleaniing up broken AIs later is a much better option imo.

Definitely go full throttle on mathematics now and start chopping more units out.

I concur.

How many HAs do we have on the Ottoman front? How many do you suppose we will need? Could start preparing a force for Peter if we're satisfied.

I still think a couple of Galleys out of Istanbul to capture Rheims is a good investment. We could drop HAs off 2/turn on to Rheims' pigs tile, without ever exposing the galley(s) to barbarian triremes. Is it possible to load units in a city and then disembark them on the same turn?

Sorry been away for a bit longer than I planned. That's what a heart attack does to you though wrecks your civ time...

Well if its ok with everybody stick me back at the end of the roster and I'll spend the next day or so trying to catch up.

We have 1 galley so far and open build que. As aj noted, we can drop 2 units a turn without exposing ourselves at all. Do we NEED a second galley right now?

You can not load and disembark the same turn.

@sleepless, if indeed you are recovering from a heart attack, best wishes!

Welcome back, sleepless! I hope you (or whomever?) is doing better.

I would recommend an axe as part of the first 2 unit load, for defensive purposes. Then we can slowly ship over more units until we have enough to deal with Rheims. We can wait and deal with Bursa later, or maybe Suleiman will move out some of his defenders once we take Ankara. Of course, he will get more culture if we leave him with only Bursa for his capital. :( Decisions, decisions.

Oh :( Fair enough that civ is a low priority!

Well if its ok with everybody stick me back at the end of the roster and I'll spend the next day or so trying to catch up.
I'll amend my previous roster to put you back in after haphazard.
