SGOTM 20 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

So it seems we end up 4th, which looks quite all right. Even if it weren't for their unfortunate mishap in the end, US would've finished a couple of turns short of us. And if it weren't for the surprisingly strong showing of CGU we might've even sniffed the bronze! So kudos to them for an excellent game. And to TSR and PR of course for ending light years ahead of the pack.

I do think our weak part is our early game. We have a tendency of getting lost in micromanagement questions (which isn't always all that optimal anyway in my opinion (which is note to self too ;) )), while not really focussing on all possibilities. We should have a more integral approach and do more "things" at the same time. So to speak we might get too focused to get a settler out a turn earlier but then forget about the whole scouting or whatever. And of course we never steal workers. It's an integral part of a good result it seems, so next time, if there is one, let's swallow the cheezy taste that (to my mind) comes with it. :p

nocho, I agree that worker stealing is something we need to look into. Getting that extra value early can make a big difference in development speed, both from more worker turns being available early and also from not stopping city growth to build that worker.

Another area that I think could use improvement is great people -- we never did a lot with great people in this game, or planned extensively for which types we wanted, etc. We could definitely do more in this area. Early wonders are also a possible area to target more -- some teams got some good value from the Great Lighthouse, if I understand correctly, and some built the Oracle.

Now you have me wondering about SGOTM21. What will our next challenge be? Only The Phantom knows! :D

Looking at 1280bc save. We had 6 workers to your 4. By looks of things 5 of these were stolen. 3 from ottoman. 2 from Russians. All 4 of yours had been built in cities.

We had 4 chariots. So 120 hammers vs 240 hammers to build workers. Plus we used the chariots to help our first war too. I think we only built 1 worker all game. Of course first workers were stolen by warriors.

I kept nagging at the team we should be worker stealing this game after TSR exploits last game. They might of listened. haha

TSR had 6 workers by 1280bc!!! They had already captured Istanbul and Ankara by this date. Plus started Oracle. Far too busy building chariots when we were all building settlers, workers and infrastructure.

I think worker stealing was quite easy here, due to the close AIs and the lack of units some of them were suffering from. So maybe the lesson is 'go for the low hanging fruits first'?

Worker stealing when put into the perspective of hammers has to be considered. It also handcuffs the local AI's a bit for easier assimilation later.

The 2 leaders just started attacking out of the gate really. As soon as they could really.

Have to agree on the worker stealing.. Too cheesy for me on personal games. Perhaps it might help me do better in the GOTM's though. :)

I never used to worker steal, but now I've seen it's power. I did it in BOTM81, an easy immortal.

I think it is a strategy that is best at immortal because the AIs start with a worker.

Last game was the one with restrictions on worker stealing. It was SGOTM 18 where some teams stole crazy amounts of workers.

Last game as well... The "restriction" was viewed by most as a non-issue... The penalty was bassically "if you worker steal, you need to take a city as a bonus".... If the game makers of a sgotm do not want worker-stealing (and I am of course not saying that is the case), then they need to flat out stop it. (For example, all capture workers must be instantly disbanded on the turn they are captured.) Worker stealing is so powerful than no discouragement short of that will stop its use.

Not a big issue if everyone does it. Restrict horse and nearby Ai and it makes worker stealing much harder. With chariots you can reach Ai much easier and pillage/choke easily.

Judging by other teams PR seem quite late on the worker stealing campaign. Although we caught up later on.

I don't think they should do anything about worker stealing. It's part of the game and is available to all teams. I would hope that after 20 SGOTMs and 83 BOTMs that all teams would have educational enough information available to be able to replicate the top teams in this aspect.

Having said that (now disagreeing with myself after only 1 paragraph!) it would be interesting if the mapmaker could make worker stealing more risky. For every stolen worker, two AI horse archers appear on your border

Of course starting us with a scout may slow worker stealing. Giving us 2-3 attacking units only encourages it.

Just in case any team members are still getting alerts from this thread and have not yet noticed, the sign ups for SGOTM21 are now open! :D

Ronnie1, McArine, and myself are back for another round. Hopefully the rest of our previous group will be available for more Civ fun as well.

Not much sign so far of our team mates from last time. :(

Only McArine, Ronnie1, and myself are signed up for SGOTM21 as of today, with sign up deadline being January 5th. Not that far away, and we are missing:

adrianj
da_Vinci
nocho
Ororo
Sleepless

compared to last time. :( Hopefully some (or all) of them will still sign up, but maybe we should look into recruiting new members? There have been a couple newcomers in the sign up thread, perhaps we should see if they would like to join us?

Thoughts, anyone?

You should tag up the new ones anyway, no matter how many will still return or not ;)

And get kcd! No clue why he sits on 'unassigned'

Good luck finding players guys. Looks like we are down to 5 teams this game.

I wonder if the unassigned could form a new team? Maybe KCD could lead them?

The best way to find new players is email your original team or email those on forum. Plenty of players still on BOTM who are unassigned.

Hi nocho! Great to see you back again. :) I also saw Sleepless signed up, which gets us up to five players.

I also saw namliaM in the sign up thread as unallocated. I played some games with him a long time back, and it was a positive experience. I could send him a message about joining us, if the team is OK with that.
